I have to say, I have worked at Renaissance Faires for years, and I know many people who feel the same, but the costumes are not at all period! That is my greatest pet peeve at RenFests.
I suppose it depends on which region of Renaissance you are looking at, but I don't think it was actually acceptable in any Renaissance cultures for women's ankles and shins to show... not that I know much about non-English Renaissance history. =]
