Irshad Manji is a Ismaili Shia Moslem. They follow the Agha Khan as their IMAM, who lives in Paris, a gamble & ,womaniser. But Manji is a atheist. These Ismailis are not even.01% of the main stream followers of the Islamic faith.
She wants to keep it short, but she keeps on rambling on... She questioned her credentials by asking: "Do you speak arabic?". Then, she contradicts herself. The only language, in which you can understand the quran is arabic. You must not speak arabic in order to understand Islam. So no understanding of the quran is necessary in order to understand Islam? Ridiculous!
Irshad is one of those few individuals who can actually think for herself. Most people go thru life conforming to their tribe, but Irshad actually goes against the grain and sees the silliness of mindless conformity to one´s tribe. She makes her arguments eloquently and normally destroys her opponents in debate.
Are you kidding me? She's a logical fallacy in a tunic. Her book has so many logical and factual errors in it. She considers herself to be an 'intellectual'. For example, she makes this ignorant comment of how there isn't enough literature written about the Quran. HELLO!!! There are whole volumes written about it. She's just a joke. The only reason why she ostensibly 'destroys' her opponents is because she shouts them down with her big mouth.
It's a shame that a so-called "humanist" like Irshad Manji receives so much attention by the media through Fox, CNN, CBC, TVO, and yet people who are really trying to fight oppression like Norman Finkelstein are constantly denied any attention. It's very arrogant of her to consider herself as a "self-proclaimed martyr".
"I don't get invited to CNN". The lady in the audience hit it out of the park with that sentence there. If you honestly see the way in which Irshad Manji conducts herself during interviews, you will see the duplicity in her arguments. Her book was seriously devoid of any scholarly value because it consisted of many logical fallacies. She is absolutely entitled to her own opinion, but no clear-headed person should take her seriously.
How did Irshad get owned? are you kidding me this individual was unable to articulate her issues with Irshad's book other then to state she felt her mother was strong figure. Also she was unable to cite one issue with Irshad's historical facts to "teach Irshad" the deep history of Islam. Please, if anything Irshad showed her what true intellectual is capable of and that is to invite criticism and debate.
What the lady in the audience tried to articulate was that Irshad Manji's book may have correct historical references;however, the case she builds by nitpicking various historical events paints an incomplete picture of Islam. It's essentially an argument that is taken out of context. For example, she advocates Ijtihad which she interprets as "critical thinking";however, the context it should be used is only for legal decisions. She makes it seem like we should change Islam under that pretense
Irshad Manji is a catalyst for positive spiritual and worldwide cultural transformation and one of the bravest humanistic seers of our time. I am amazed by her clarity of position and articulate framing of the rational approach to problem solving. She approaches the issues of our time with command of diverse opinion. I consider her a breadth of perfumed air
and a gift to all who walk in the way of Love,
and an inspiration and wake up call to those who don't.
Thank you for the kind words, croatsensation1, I first heard Irshad on c-span about a year ago and I was mesmerized by her. She was addressing the American Library association, it was completely riveting - I fell in love with her on the spot!
Im sorry, I dont find her misrepresenting a religion she claims to have refreshing at all. In fact its quite frustrating for someone who has no real knowledge of Islam to really speak about it. I am all for the human rights, but I am not for making a mockery of others beliefs just because she has a chip off her shoulders
There is only one way to represent any major religious tradition - and that is the recognition of the power and beauty of LOVE. All the dogmas and machinations of theology are rendered insignificant outside of LOVE. We (humanity) are united through mutual respect and LOVE.
I don't deny that in any religion any belief whatever it may be Love is necessary, but she is not spreading love. She is being used as a spokes person to represent a religion, and what she portrays is what most of the west views which is a very hateful view of Islam. She calls herself a Muslim, but she doesn't have love for Islam, nor for the Muslim brothers and sisters. This was all I was trying to say.

She is insulting the intelligence of the audience. The professor hasn't even read the book.

I agree with your analysis completely. She is a joy to hear and I am proud she came from Canada.

If any religion strays from the truth of LOVE
it is the bringer of darkness and suffering.
