  • MIRROR THIS: <3

TO GET THE SOLUTION OF THE FINAL LITTLE RIDDLE :)

  • at 6:27 28+8 = 34?? lol :D

  • I laughed so hard! "The number of pears in a pair of pears." BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • At 6:24 you added 8 to 28 and got 34. </3 Loljk

  • ...you blow my mind with the 50 set of 101 pairs...and they you just casually go on singing,i was busy pondering how clever that is!

  • i'm not sure how to feel about the concept of anti-beer, but it sure made me laugh :D

  • @TigrisCariosus It's called Klatchian Coffee.

  • haha, epsilon greater than is E>, much like less than three (<3), since we all know 3 is a backwards E :D iseewhatyoudidthere :D

  • the rings in this song are meant as the rings on a bird so the first 7 things are birds

  • best part: number of pears in a pair..of a pear..wtf

  • @dibbers I'm sorry, I was focused so much on thinking that you meant the style in which she added, and not the actual math she performed, you're right. Thank you.

  • Couldn't it be e to the i tau?

  • Whoa. She threw down that mobius strip so fast.

  • "a funny looking S"

    "a funny looking ass"

  • I have learned, that he wrote down all the numbers twice in normal order and backwards on the next line.

So it is even easier to see, the pairs.

  • hahaha.. you made a mistake in guass.. 28 + 8!!

  • SHE LIKES SNAKES! YAY!

  • I wish I had all your notebooks

  • IT DOESN'T GO TO ELEVEN!

  • When you got to the tenth day you became quite lazy...

  • my god, it all makes sense now! why couldn't you have been my math teacher when i was in high school?!

  • I'm surprised you didn't talk about tetrahedral numbers, which would be all the gifts you have received up to a certain day including the days before.

  • youtube.com/watch?v=WkBcq5ARqJM&feature=related

for those who haven't seen Vihart

  • FIIIIIVE GOOOOOLDEEEEEN RRR-atio producing pentagons!

Just had to LOL at this.

  • i burst out laughing at 8:00... ive always though a base 12 system, or something similar would be much better then 10

  • The number of pears in a pair of pears

  • 6:26 28+8 isn't 34 it's 36! ;)

  • iambic pentameter is English... but oh, well.

  • At 6:24, 28 + 8 = 36 ;)

  • Adding any sequence of whole numbers starting from 1:

    Σn=(n+1)*(n/2)

  • the way u draw the 2 is awesome :P

  • when the big bang theory isn't on (which is most of the time since its only on from 6-7 +8+9) i watch this when i feel like watching it.

  • you can have non-alcoholic beer

  • I'd pay $5000 just to look at your notebooks for an hour.

  • you would be the perfect wife for sheldon.

  • A girl doing math? Amazing!

  • @Bloodsaberxy what's so amazing about that? i'm the top of my class and i'm a girl. i was the only person in my class to get 100% on my test a week ago.

  • (so if we take a decimal system with 6 then you will write 1==>1 with the first figure for the 10decimal system and the second the figure in the 6 decimal system. you will get further: 2==>2, 3==>3,4==>4, 5==>5 , 6==>10, 7==>11, 8==>12, 9==>13, 10==>14, 11==>15, and no other prime numbers will end with 3 )

  • sorry did make a error. it must be: 5 is the only prime ending with a 5, is so in-relevant because it depends on numeral system. so if you take a prime number x (for example take 3; x=3) so if you take a multiply of x and you make your own decimal system with it (so if we are talking about 2 you get binary and for 10 or normal decimal system) then the prime number x is the only prime number who is a prime and ending with x

  • Yeah, the Grandfather theory kinda scares me too.

  • You could tell she was running out of ideas at the end (half a heart...on a plate!) but I would have run out sooner and it was really awesome anyways.

  • dont wanna question your knowledge, but there isn't a year 0. (after 1 BC comes 1 AD)

  • I wish I was a mathematician that invented all of the things her true love gave her so I could be her true love

  • @ Fonemillion 73 ends in 3.

  • pff. 5 is the only prime ending with a 5, is so in-relevant because it depends on numeral system. so if you you only use 0, 1 and 2 (so 4 is described with 11) 3 will be the only prime ending with a 3. so it is a characteristic of a prime number. so you only sad that 5 is a prime number.

  • @Fonemillion what about 73?

  • it's funny because thats how i used to say christmass as a kid

  • she must go through so much paper

  • Wow, another person anti-time travel?

    I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE!

  • you must buy a lot of sharpies

  • 6:25 So 28 + 8 = 34 now?

    Welp, if Vihart says so...

  • I've seen three of these things thanks to reddit and the sexual condescension explosion caused by the audacity of a female human daring to explain precious male maths but I have to stop because I'm feeling sad about all the trees that gave their lives for this video. Its the same feeling I get when I see the massive tomes of Twilight novels or textbooks on redacted american history. (actual condescension is more refreshing than the usual misogyny but I can bet you already know I don't care).

  • You are freakin' awesome!

  • I feel smart. I figured out the Carl Guess thing a few year ago, only instead you took the number, divided by 2, added .5 and multiplied by the original number.... The way in the video is a lot easier.

  • Ɛ>

    Epsilon greater than. :D

  • After a while this acully sounded like a whole song lol

  • ... equals 1. Almost.

    Made me laugh.

  • Why are you so awesome?

  • I really need to stop getting distracted from my math..

  • Merry Christmath!

  • Half a heart... on a plate.

  • @fireburner81 That's a pretty poor excuse to rag on the video

  • @MattLikesToComment ANDNDNDN she plays starcraft

  • So I take your true love likes Math XD

  • Decent song.....but would be a lot better if you could sing the word "gave". It's "gave".....not "guyve". I barely watched the whole thing because it was so annoying. Sorry.

  • @fireburner81 "guyve" is how it sounds in traditional folk music... :-)

  • OMG...:( I wish I KNEW YOU before I took the SATS, that question stumped me so BAD and I didn't get it. The sum of any series of consecutive numbers is equal to the first number plus the last number multiplied by half the amount of numbers. !!!!!!!!!!

  • the number of pairs in a pair lol

  • Wow! You're great! I'm an econ phd student at UCB and I'm so stoked to see someone get how cool math is AND put it to music and video. Bravo!

  • Well, I just spent about an hour watching your videos instead of doing my french project.

  • ε> 28+8 = 34

If you have a great and comprehensive understanding and love of maths, and make mistakes like that, then that's a huge encouragement to me. It's like Einstein assuring us all his problems are far worse in that oft repeated quote

  • How comes I learn more math watching these videos than in math class :/ eh..

  • Time for a clever comment.

I don't remember giving all of these things to you, Vi. ;)

  • I think I learned more in this video than I ever did in math class... probably because I wasn't paying attention in math class

  • I think you just made me want to switch majors to mathematics....

  • Fun, beautiful and educational. The only flaw is mentioning the terrible idea of (gasp) ANTI-BEER! : O

  • In Belgium we saw that Gauss only had to tell from 1 to 60 so he came out 1830!

  • hahaha i guess she ran out of number facts once she got to 9 xD i laughed so hard. i love learning :) thank you Vihart

  • is it wrong to fall in love with someone, even though you've only seen their hands?

  • @redKELLYMHRCH no becuase if your a good person you wont give a *meow* what they look like you know alot about them so why not :)

  • @redKELLYMHRCH You could have a hand fetish (Joke xD)

  • She's musical. She's mathematic. She's artistic. She's humorous and downright awesome.

    I could marry her.

  • 5:49 6 sides on a cube depends on the way you define "sides." You could define it as edges, faces or another thing that I don't know what to call (four faces that"wrap" the cube around, I guess) and only one of them makes 6

  • @jbartlett0007 Thanks! Wow, kind of should of gotten that...

  • This was awesome! What does "Epsilon Greater-than" mean/come from?

  • @mman4441 If you draw it out it makes a heart

  • a number of pears in a pair of pears XD

  • You are a really good singer, but it sounds to me like you need to relax your voice and stop singing with your throat so much, try using your stomach more. You are completely in tune but because your voice sounds so tense it's making me a little tense too :P

  • I just noticed my comment about adding incorrectly got a few thumbs up and is now at the top, just wanted Vihart to know she is still awesome (I'm sure she knows that), and making one tiny mistake in the video is fine, I didn't know 90% of what she was doing but did catch that one addition error. :)

  • 2:23 Jesus was in fact born roughly 6 years before 0

  • 2 = half-a-heart on a plate

    Love it

  • Haha, I love this

  • absolute value? Try e^iTau. XD

  • 1:23 "number of spatial dimensions...... at least macroscopically..... don't yell at me string theorists" LOL

  • Comment removed

  • You make math fun! <3 I like triangles too!

  • Supercool vid, but when exactly was year zero?

  • I feel dumb.

  • There's a Spiked Math comic (comic 471) about this song which also goes into the tetrahedral numbers which represent the total number of gifts given so far on each day. :)

  • WOW I JUST TIME TRAVELED!!!!!!! my phone says its the first and this video was/is uploaded on the third. . . O_O

  • @sumLAOfolkZ I guess you travelled forward 363 days. :)

  • @Cernoise i must have. what a score!!! alright time to go look for "past" self

  • @sumLAOfolkZ You do realize that it was uploaded on the 3rd of 2011, not 2012, right? :S

  • @VinceBroo NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. . . i didnt realize that. . .

  • I hated math before I started watching these videos.

  • Myrrh was used for embalming...

  • I had to do a play and they handed me the Microphone...I think you know what I sang next :3

  • @Dibbers, how? I don't understand how that was wrong. She adds 1 and 2, which is 3, then she immediately goes into adding the next number, which is also 3, making 6, which also immediately goes into the next equation. I'm sure what you'd prefer is 1 plus 2 plus 3 plus 4 and so on, but if you ignore the previous sum, she's adding them individually, each as a separate sum, instead of making it one big sum. I'm not saying the way I assume you'd prefer is wrong, but her way isn't incorrect either

  • @iisgray at 6:24, she writes 28 + 8 = 34.

  • @iisgray - 28 + 8 does not equal 34 no matter what you assume.

  • just out of curiosity is it the same note book in all your videos or do you just have tonnes of notebooks lying around?

  • I just fell in love! :)

  • @ 8:40

There is no such thing as a right equilateral triangle. Like dibbers, I am just sayin'.

  • I think I 0=(x^2+y^2-1)^3 - x^2 * y^3 you.

  • Your just amazing. Really. Best videos I've ever found.

  • This is my new favorite channel.

    Happy Yuletide season to you!

  • How come you are anti-time travel?

  • @youtubrgirl12345 perhaps butterfly effect.

  • I'm making this video a Christmas tradition.

  • VI: you rock so much. I've been watching and sharing some of your videos for a while and only now it occurred to me to tell the person behind them how awesome they are. So there you go. Your attitude to math is inspiring in the literal sense, the one that makes you glue up a piece of paper into a Mobius strip and cut it through the middle just to see what happens. Please keep doing these and generally rocking out with your beautiful mind. Have a great xmas and a marvelous new year.

  • @anavishofsorts good for you! someone needed to say it... I got a little misty eyed reading your comment, lol... you said it better than I could ;)

  • That was awesome!

  • w00t for Christmas! I get the gift of seeing this video for the first time on Christmas eve, pretty freaking awesome XD

  • For some reason you remind me of my grade 10 math teacher, except much more entertaining.

  • ‎@ 6:24 she adds incorrectly. Just sayin'. But yes, cool.

  • @dibbers No... Vihart did it, so therefore it is the entirety of math itself that is incorrect. Vihart is merely revealing it to us subliminally...

  • @dibbers shes only human

  • 3- "The number of spatial dimensions(atleastmacroscopicallydon'tyellatmestringtheorists)"

This whole video is completely ingenious! :D

  • The number of pears in a pair.. of pears..!

  • You included German in there! Plus 1000 awesome points!

  • Does anti beer make you more sober? I don't like the sound of that

  • this is AWESOME!

and i must say thank you to google for transcribing what vihart said, i'm italian and she speaks definitely too fast for me.

  • Is there really an argument going on in the comments amount math??? After watching this video over and over, I still don't understand half of it and probably never will, but the two of you amaze me. Assuming you actually watched the video and don't just like making random arguments that prove that you are smarter than another random stranger on the internet, you should have realized that math can actually be fun and not just a tool by trolls. Sadly I am running out of space so I leave you now.

  • Why so bitterly anti-time travel?

  • Comment removed

  • Going back to year zero? lol ..

There is no such thing as 'year 0'^^

  • @Insanity0107 Beat me to it =P

  • epsilon greater than <3 ^___^

  • I have officially made it a personal tradition to watch this video every Christmas.

  • you wouldent have to say "the absolute value" at 00:52 if you used e^(i ' tau). that's another point for tau, in your face pi!

  • When you spell it

  • Could have said that 4 is the only number that has the same amount of letters the number states

  • Your Amazing!

  • you had x cannot equal zero for your x^0 = 1...isn't 0^0 = 1?

  • @fallofadam No. Zero is the exception. As you probably already know, mathematics has all these rules for coming up with solutions, but it also has an equal number of rules for exceptions. Zero raised to the power of zero is still zero, or rather, it would break your calculator...go ahead and try it, I'll wait.

  • @BallisticTorch As a mathematician, I have to disagree. 0^0 =1 (by definition). Heres why:

    Argument 1: 0^x = 0 for every x>0, so take the limit as x goes to zero to yield 0^0 = 0.

    Argument 2: y^0 = 1 for every y>0, so take the limit as y goes to zero to yield 0^0 = 1.

Argument 3: Set f(x,y) = y^x. This function is discontinuous at f(0,0) from the above two arguments, and therefore 0^0 is simply undefined.

Resolution: 0^0=1 simply because we define it to be so; simply put, it is more elegant.

  • @86jmh You would think that "by definition", any number raised to the power of 0 would equal 1. In the equation x^y, you are multiplying base number "x" by "x" for "y" times. For example, 3^2 is 3 * 3, or 3^3 is 3 * 3 * 3. So, if x=0 and y=1 (0^1), you get 0 * 0 = 0. Any positive number greater than 0 raised by the power of 0 will equal 1, that is the rule, and it includes the exception. You said it yourself in argument 2, but provided the wrong yield. 0^0=0, all day, everyday.

  • Myrrh's a rare spice. I should know because I played Melchior, the king who brings myrrh in my schools Christmas Concert.

  • I was waiting for 12, saw only 10 seconds left, hoping for really fast, so disappointing. Oh well. Merry Christmas!!

  • but nice job

  • this was anoying when we had to watch it in math class lol

  • duplicate notebook, sell on amazon, profit

  • Is it possible to get the lyrics to this? Some of them I'm having trouble hearing and I'd like to be able to share this with friends and sing it this holiday season!

  • i LOVE this. my students are going to be forced to listen to this EVERY DAY in between thanksgiving and christmas in class once i finally get my teaching certificate....

  • THE NUMBER I LOVE TO DO HIGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • dayam you song good AND your smart

  • <3. :)

  • <3

  • the number of pears in a pear

  • Are you God?

  • I absolutely love you...If I weren't gay I would marry you! lol

  • *Drunk* I... i totally believe in the anti-beer... *faints*

  • Are you single? Can I have your number?

  • damn. math is cool.

  • SPINAL TAP REFERENCE!!!! I love you more than I already did. -3

  • 2 = half a heart on a plate. lol!

  • This video gave me a stomachache... not because its too complicated but because I understood it all.

Childhood well spent in classrooms? - No.

    Love the ending though ^^

  • N'awww, I'm touched ;')

  • I feel very inadequate whenever I watch your videos, but then I remember I'll have stuff this level some day. XD

From one of your younger viewers, Merry Christmath! :D

  • @Starrehchan Don't worry - I didn't learn a lot of this stuff til college! Consider yourself a step ahead of the game

  • Good Gods, why the hell weren't you around when *I* was in High School/College? This is awesome!

  • Yeah, SCREW YOU, 12!

  • e^iπ? I'm ashamed of you! Surely it should be e^iτ.
