great song, the first 2 10,000 maniacs albums are classics of the early 90's. Timeless beauty..heard this was the Endeavour Wake up song on STS-XXX today..nice
If you remember the original video (which the skunks at Warner pulled off), you can see that she is somewhat doing the same dance she did on top of the Chrysler Building in that video. She is great.
That version posted by yellowcrayon7 has the video - but he trickily avoided Warners by pasting some other music on it. So, play this version and watch that version with the sound turned down! Now, if we could only find Candy Everybody Wants...
Agreed. I'm reading these comments and damn some people are not only plain cruel but their comments have no relevancy.
Natalie Merchant/10,000 maniacs had a huge impact on the 90's music scene. She's an incredible talent filled with positivity and optimisim. Learn to love. There is no room for hate or hating. However, if you insist, I got some grape hatorade if anyone else wants to chime in with their cruel remarks. Drink up!
When this came out live on MTV, I was about 25-26 years old. I am a Philosopher, I am not a normal person in the sense that I don't really like music in general. But when I heard this music it definitely did something to me, it is very special, poetic in nature, and yet I don't like poetry. This music isn't really music, it's something more, something which speaks to me in way that other music does not. It's very special, very unique, very beautiful, and I'll never forget this time of my life.
c'mon whats that u dont like music cause ure a philosopher? u mean u dont like music "even though" u r a philosopher.. Philosophy has a long term relation with music ever since pythagorism, plato and ancient greek philosophy and what about schopenhauer, nietzsche and kierkegaard and so many others???
And whats that about u calling urself a philosopher, even if u have a degree, a paying job teaching or are an investigator its a very defying affirmation... but then again, maybe im having a conversation with leon robin or pete sloterdijk or something right? and i doubt they go around calling themselves "philosophers" right away at first glance
Music today and music of Plato's time are two different kinds of music, one is stupidity with idiotic words put together which have no real meaning whatsoever, and the other is a harmony of different wavelengths of sound which come together to lift the spirit, move the soul, and relax...
well, said that u dont really listen to nowadays music i say its a prejudice to call it idiotic and stupid.. i think if u had experienced more u'd probably found more examples of great things u could call "music" properly... and about u being a lover of wisdom and truth i doubt it after reading your swedenborgh-like, tv-prophet demagogue thing u got going on ur channel.
er.. nothing against swedenborgh whatsoever, hes great
Don't know what you're talking about. Natalie is a beautiful dancer! Too bad that Morgan (the backup singer) didn't feel like getting up and dancing also.
I have loved this whole performance since it was first aired and have a video recording somewhere. I get a kick out of the way Natalie pulls a hair out of her mouth halfway through this song and seems to find it quite funny. I've only seen her once in concert and she was wonderful.
Song makes me bawl every time I hear it. Always has. Now it makes me think of my Mother though, which makes it worse. She passed January 13th this year.
Man what memories. This song was played at my high school graduation in 95 and then again during the last high school talent show performance my class ever did before we graduated. This was our class theme song. While I don't miss high school (whoever does) I miss those days.
Natalie is of the type of musician that you can tell geuinely has the love of music. She always has such a good time when performing. Watching her makes me happy.
HOW could anyone be annoyed by it? Anyone I've ever heard with an opinion about it thought her voice was nothing short of amazing!
She bobbed her hair sometime between January and June 1993. Women tend to do that for some reason when they reach 30. IMO, nearly all women look better with long hair ... Natalie is no exception. Stunning in spite of the bob though.
Possibly the only woman on earth I could steal a kiss from that my wife would not object to, we are both fans and thanks Natalie for your inspiration, my songs are getting heard...
This song brings me back to when the Olympics were in Atlanta. There was so much energy and excitement in the air, and this song was played a lot during the Olympics. Natalie's got such a unique voice.
I know Natalie Merchant has a long history with 10,000 Maniacs and I respect her a lot as a performer/artist. However, vocally speaking, I don't feel she holds a candle to her replacement, Mary Ramsey. Her voice is much more emotionally profound & effective. I bought the album with Mary on lead vocals and she is absolutely phenomenal! More Than This is one of my all-time favourites!
How could you not love this this song. When I heard it first it was dedicated ti a himeless man on my radio. Now it seems to mean more to me. The words "blessed and lucky" seem to apply to me even though I've had bad luck. But then, haven't we all? This is Natalie Meracant at her best. She encourages the musical and spiritual sides of our souls.
This performance was so amazing, 10,000 Maniacs was pure magic that time Natalie was so bright that night it was unbelievable that she was about to leave the band... I miss so much her music inside 10,000 Maniacs...
I was about 26/27 at the time, it was the best time of my life, and for me, this particular event, listening to this entire performance, both with the incredible stage and quality to it, along with the poetry of Natalie's music, made this time of my life something I will never forgot. Her music wasn't just music, it was class, it was poetry, it was a style very unique. But I also think this particular performance was also unique, and very special. Thank you for the upload!
patty smith isn't there... that is a mistake. Patty Smith Co-Wrote one song she performed as an encore during this concert called "Because The Night" ..but she was not at that concert

That's what music does to people.
So instead of "I am not a normal person", perhaps "I tend to be more selective" would be more accurate.
