i think 1gb its not enought to support a good xp vm session and work with another application like photoshop or similar, if you give 1gb of ram to your xp vm you see how leopard heavy use a swap on hd and a very slow work. 1gb its only to try, 2 or 4gb its a optimal solution to use a 100% powerfull of leopard and fusion.
Wow, 4 GB? I've got 1 GB in my Macbook and it runs perfect with XP and Leopard (XP in a Space using VMWare Fusion)
