  • you might have mentioned it before but what kind of paper are you using?

  • @HamzaA001 Cheap computer paper. 92 white. It might be a little thicker than the thinnest computer quality. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are uber-cheap like I am.

  • just found my newest subscription! top class commentating and comments. keep up the convo and the flow im learning from this.

  • your baby just mimicked you when you said 0:57 "not gonna worry about perfection your kid repeats it". Its amazing how children learn.BtW nice tutorial

  • Was that supposed to say revenge or revege? Otherwise, awesome video! :P

  • hahaha you spelled revenge wrong.

  • what were your children saying all the time you'were drawing???

  • @jayant747 Just babble that a baby would say. Although on one of these videos, a viewer pointed out at one point it sounds like the baby says WHAT THE HELL.

  • Hey, I like this style! I do have a question, I hope it's not a problem. But do you write the story of your comics before you draw them? Just curious. I'm a very novice comic maker, just looking for advice. Thanks man, and good video

  • @RottenCrayon24 With a comic based on my life and family life, during the day a situation or hypothetical thing comes in my head. It would be funny if..... and I write all this down on a list. And this was me cranking out the jokes. I had the idea, but went to the page to pace out the joke. I didn't write panel 1 or have a script or anything. More of a bullet point list of ideas I get. If it's worthy of going in the book, if it makes me laugh, I put it on the list.

  • Thank you. That's a good idea! :D I think that will help me make my comics better

  • @RottenCrayon24 Yeah. There's a few people like me. The writer/artist. You keep things fresh by not planning every detail before hand. Like a bus ride. You know you are going from L.A. to N.Y. and you have to stop in Chicago to do something. You've got the plan, but when you draw, that's when you get to see the details of actually doing it. You have to keep your kinetic energy going on this stuff, that way you will be motivated to keep it going.

  • @eddiechinglives Also, sometimes before I hit a page, I shoot some photographic reference or draw on some scrap paper first, so I have a little bit of an idea how I should attack the page. But sometimes this can get in the way of my kinetic motivation to draw and it can get frustrating.

  • Alright. Thank you for all of the advice! You're a good man!

  • I think that this is one of your best pages in the book.

  • @connormac1234567 Thanks. So you've read the book?

  • Unfortunatly no, I havent, but I want to.

But I read your preview on comicspace, and I watched your "Stupid Comic Commentary" videos.

That's how I know It's your most awesomist page.

  • @connormac1234567 if you live in the u.s., message me. I can send you a copy for 3 bucks, or I can trade if you have your own comic as well. Just spreading the word, don't want to come across as too pushy with my book. 3 bucks is a lot now days. I plan to make a super mini-comic version that I plan to ship for a buck, but that's long in the future when I have time.

  • you sir/madam.

steal my words. and I thank you.

  • Exactly.

  • Excuse MR. EDDIE, but do you know where i can find "prisma colour markers" (excuse my spelling)..i would love to know

  • You could try art stores like Michaels, or try some online art stores.

  • your good at this

  • uh, why does it read revege...?

anyway, your line art is very good... I'll keep on practicing... btw what pen do you use...?

  • I suck at self editing, that's why. But I got an extra page out of it.

I use various markers of various thicknesses. I found the newish sharpie marker pen. "A marker that's a pen." To be a pretty nice alternative to the micron, and I found some cheap. But basically, they are both the same price, but the sharpies I can get at wal-mart. I use a thicker marker for the letters and borders, and a thicker marker for blacking out. All markers. Not the best way, just what works for me. Thanks!

  • I have my own blackie too

    my blackie is exy though....

    just kidding....

    uhm...awkward....

    JUST KIDDING!

  • You keep on telling yourself that your bad, but your comics are way cool!

  • Thanks. It's just my way of softening the blow when people say my videos and work suck. It's like, yeah, I beat you to it. The vids are called "Crappy Comic Tutorial" what do you expect. In reality, I'm trying to pass on my techniques that helped me crank out comics, so hopefully the new generation can skip a few steps and not take as long learning this stuff that I did. Hope this helps.

  • The REVENGE panel really looks awesome. These videos are actually pretty good, its nice to get a different look at making a comic! A non-professional (no offense) kinda, winging it as you go along. Really great man! Good job!

  • You're great at telling how to make comics. I have really become better at it, so thank you for the videos. :)

  • this was really really funny. and informative. i have the same comic approach as you, but the last year or so i've been trying to "grow up" and do perspective and stuff, but truth be told, i have no idea what i'm doing, so i end up spending 4 hours on one panel and then throw it out because it looks like monkey poo. so thank you for reminding me to get back to basics! I'd very much like to read the finished product some time. thumbs up!

  • Thanks. I've been stuck in that same rut for comic #2. I just need to set a distant time goal, say 4th of July it needs to be done. And I need to do a page a weekend. 22 weeks, I should be done. But odds are I'll get on an artistic roll and get a few pages done on the weekend from time to time. Keep up the momentum, and link me some art sometime!

  • your like a pro! you know how to explain everything! and its clear to understand I had trouble making comics but know I cando really good.

    Thnx 4 posting!

  • dude, great tutorial! SO COOL! and dont worry about the whole "revege" thing, ido stupid stuff like that all the time. and, you are just using printing paper, right?

  • Yes. 22 lb. paper that is just a tad thicker than the normal 20 lb. stuff. I've been thinking about switching to cardstock paper. 8.5x11 or 11x17. I like drawing smaller, so I might just stick with 8.5x11 22 lb. stuff. Thanks for the kind words! You are too sweet!

  • Hey thanks, your tutorials have really helped me in comic making. I'm not too bad with art, but how did you learn? Did you just watch videos, or did you learn from any sites/books?

  • I wanted to be in comics since I was in 5th grade. I'm almost 30 now. So I've been trying to figure it out for a long time. I got tons of books, I always pick my favorite comics apart and wonder why do I like one comic over another. But nothing beats having an idea, and then splattering it on the page and getting it done. Practice makes perfect, and I'm a long ways from perfect, so I gotta go practice some more. Dave Sim says everyone has about 1,000 bad pages in them, so I better get to work.

  • dude your awesome i love the quick but funny storyline...im struggling with my own story line so far i got the main character and the head title Zion the Elemental Guardian...but anyways mann keep up the great work i love the tutorials it was alot of help and great inspiration!!! thanks!!! oH and id wish you would stop doown talking your work it is great !!

  • Thanks. I do have a few vids on story writin'. It helps to dissect stories into 3 acts. Beginning Middle End. 1st act, 2nd act, 3rd act. The 1st act, the protagonist has a goal. The second act, on the way to the goal, a crisis occurs (someone is kidnapped maybe, maybe the hero is tied up or left for dead)and in the 3rd act, the hero has to get what was taken in the 2nd act, beat the bad guy, and blow up his base. I should make a vid on it, but my structure vid is similar.

  • Great tutorial. Alot of information, helps me alot. Good artwork too. 5 stars.

    Revege!

  • Thank you sir! Glad I could help.

  • haha..."It's an illusion..." NICE going... you got a lot of talent. I especially like how the baby is going off in the background...haha, it was like whoa...what's going on back there... anyways...keep up the good work!

  • nice tutorial 5/5

  • whoa, i thought it was hard to do the blacking stuff/ detail of light. i was wrong! please make another vid with tips, cuz i like making comics, but they kinda (in other words really) suck.

  • Practice and be persistent. Keep at it. It's how most comic artists get started. They all have made little comics when they were younger. Dave Sim says you have 1,000 bad pages in you. It's the only way to learn. No book or video can give you the knowledge of learning from each challenging page.

  • wow your really good when i tried blacking out and stuff i just made blobs of black and it looked realy messy and unproessional. any tips?

  • Keep at it. Take your time. Be patient.

  • Hey great tutorial! I'm also a comic artist too but I'm self taught and lazy so I screw up a lot on bordering and the professionalism of it. Yeah, I'm a slacker.

  • Thanks. Sounds like we are quite similar.

  • Yeah? Cool. In my ongoing years of making comics I mostly draw fast food killing themselves but I've actually spent a long year actually trying to get a few things right in character's depth. Do you have a website?

  • its great apart from u spelt revenge wrong lol

  • I would say the way to make a good comic is not all about the detail in the drawings but the neatness and the way it set out

  • Good point. Art is so subjective, there really isn't any right way. But the wrong way is to not produce work.

  • What marker do you use to black in?

  • I use various cheap generic markers I get from a dollar store in various sizes. I like the generic stuff because it doesn't give you a head rush.

  • yeah artisans is right your drawings are really sweet, much better than marvel and DC!

  • I HIGHLY doubt that, but I appreciate the compliment. Plus those guys can crank that stuff out on a monthly basis...well, most of them, anyways. And I still struggle with consistancy.

  • Thanks for the nice words, artisands. Yeah, I've took art classes in high school. But since I don't paint or look off of reference much, they don't help with what I do, although I should use more reference. Thanks!

  • Did you go to Art school? because I hate to dis-agree with you but those drawings are not crap. I like the look of the final pages, has an indie feel to it. keep drawing man. Very informative tutorial.

  • Man, thanks for showing me you can make a great looking comic out of crap supplies. (Not to insult your artistic arsenal)

  • Yeah, the only 'real' pen I use is a micron for lettering. I haven't found a cheap pen that is thick enough, or doesn't blot.

  • Yeah, I need to get something besides sharpies.

  • well... gud tutorial 1 question how do u make it into a book?

  • Click on my name and click on my last two videos. It shows how I used a print-on-demand service to get it done. It's long and boring, but you did ask. And I put in some subliminal evil kittins on the end of part two, just as a reward for those who can make it through!

  • ermm can u oso make the comic papers? in the com.. plz?

  • I'm not sure I understand the question.

  • you forgot the n in revenge

  • Thanks! I'm trying to write a comic myself and that helped me! So thanks again!

  • No problem. Link me some samples when your done. My tip is if it feels like a hurdle to get a bunch of paged done, just pick like the four best pages that look fun to draw and go for those. Then do a couple more after that, and a couple more...to build the momentum.

  • This is great! I've been thinking of doing a comic recently and this has helped me with the processes.

  • This is just my process. I should use bigger paper, and more professional quality equipment, but I like drawing small, and I like how it doesn't matter what you use to make comics. It's not what you use, it's how you use it.

  • The hardest part is just starting the project and not worrying about being as good as you think you can be. Just do your best on a page, and move on.

  • wtf is revege?

  • man what the hell are you talking about your art is not bad watsoever i meen theres better artists but ur certainly not bad and thanks i am gonna try it

  • Thanks. I think artists will allways think they are bad, otherwise they won't get better. And you don't have to get these specific tools. You can use quality paper and crow quills and brushes. I'm just saying I'm too cheap and lazy to do it the right way. So I can still produce comics with office supplies. And a micron pen for lettering. That's the only thing I need to splurge on, because that sharpie fine marker tends to want to blot and bleed on my cheap super absorbant computer paper.

  • i love to draw and do art, but you are right because I always think I have to do more or make it better. I never think my art is perfect.

  • My point is, no excuses! Don't let lack of art skills or lack of quality tools stop you from making comics! All it takes is plot and characters then take it from there. Number a sheet of paper from 1-22 and plot a story from there. If 22 is too much, just do a 4-8 page story. Get that momentum started and stop thinking about doing a comic, and start doing the comic!

  • 2 questions

    1 whats the comic about

2 what were thoese noises in the backround

  • The comic is about me, my wife, and a little bit about my kid. Mainly it's my wife messing with me and me being an embarassment of a father. The noises in the background is probably my audience member, aka my son.

  • nice u have good talent

  • Thanks. I'm trying to reveal all my little personal tricks and tips I've got, so maybe it'll save some steps for others. This is my way, but you'll find your way. Don't worry. Blacking out is my favorite thing to do to give my work a "finished" professional-ish look.

  • kool

  • Thanks for the nice comments, people.

  • A neat quick intro on how to make comics. I like his goofy, quirky style

  • A neat quick intro on how to make comics. I like his goffy, quirky style

  • um u forgot to outline the top panel lol!

    cool comix

  • Thank You SO MUCH!!!! I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS SINCE LAST WEEK!!! THNX FOR UPLOADING!!!!!!!!!

  • i like that idea , zig-zagging the corners like that ! i never thought of it ! cool idea man! its cool to put stuff like that when your done drawing but sometimes feels so plain in parts . good stuff guy!

  • "I'd like to get a comic out and printed some time before I die,but I'm not going to wait for talant to get here"....LMAO!!!!

  • cool work man! keep up the excellent work!

  • I'm no expert at this, there's probably other better ways to do things, but this is how I do it. So ask some people on the penciljack website in the tips and tech section.

  • But if your color replacer tool is turning everything gray, sounds like your have gray selected as one of your two foreground background colors. So if gray is one of the colors on your two color selector things, try making the gray one white, and eye drop the other one on the blue pencils that you want to get rid of.

  • You might want to think about using tracing paper or a light board for the inking process then. I'm thinking about changing myself.

  • Thanks! But I have Photoshop, and the color replacer isn't the same, and it just wants to turn the pencil lines more gray. I tried a small little face penciled in blue colored pencil, and inked in black. Again, it wants the blue pencil GRAY.

    Args.

  • But to avoid smearing, I heard some people work from top left to bottom right so their hand doesn't smear it. I'm not worried about smearing graphite, if you mean pencil, I can use the color replacer tool to get rid of that, or I could use a light board to trace my drawings for the inking stage, or use tracing paper like Will Eisner does.

  • Ink? I just use magic felt tip markers. For inking drawings with a nib or brush, I would recommend getting some thicker paper. Some copy paper is thick, or you could get cheap sketchbook paper from Target or Walmart.

  • Smeared*

  • One question: How do you get your paper to not get all speared w/ ink or graphite, or wrinkled? I'm having problems with that. :(

  • Thanks for the comments! I should make a short ten second clip of me fixing it, and yelling "THERE!" Hehhe

  • lol ooh sorry then xDDDDD i didnt see this later xD but anyways i luv the enthusiasm in ur voice xD

  • Yeah, I...uh... meant to do that. I did a follow up page and made it seem like I did I just said it wrong, but I SHOULD have erased it in PaintShopPro. Thanks for pointing it out anyways. I noticed it durring the edditing process, I felt like a major dumbass, but uploaded anyways. I only have a little pride left now, but that's okay.

  • spelt revenge wrong

  • Clearly he wants to buy more vegetables because some were thrown out with the comics. REVEGE!

    Cool vids :)

  • Exciting.
