It could have just as easily been die cast. Milling an aluminum block that large down to that small is so wasteful. All those chips you see fly off is energy wasted. They didn't even use waterjets for the key holes.
I love my Air, but I feel very guilty about the awful working conditions in suppliers' factories (like Foxconn)... if anybody's unfamiliar, read about the N-Hexane being used to polish screens -- it is toxic to the central nervous system and has injured a lot of workers there
this is how much quality is put into the manufacturing of their products! I hate when people say Macs are overpriced, really they can't afford it. But what you pay for is what you get, sleek, beauty, power.
I feel as if mine is amazing. I can't go back to a pc because everything just feels so much more awkward. i guess I've become used to the awesome trackpad.
@xXxholicalxXx Yes, this is what i love! had to go on a friend's pc, and it was just so unresponsive, no fast scrolling or making image bigger/smaller with a ''pinch'', no swiping, yes, the smoothness of the trackpad is a delight-it is glass [I think] but it feels smoother than glass.
hey, i am confused, i got a choice of buying a macbook unibody with 4gb ram (13.3inch) or macbook pro aluminium non uni (15 inch) 2gb ram but same processor, which should i get?
I love my Mac... I always wanted a Mac because they "looked" nice and today, that is still one of my favorite things about it... But apart from how it looks, it works like a gem... Its so responsive and so seamless in operating that when I use my sisters PC, I just can't use it appropriately... Macs are great. I just wish that I had waited a bit to get a 13 inch Mac with the Intel i5 Processors and 320 GB of HD... But my Core 2 Duo is still great. :D
My father had one of the first Aluminium Macs, back in 2003, and somehow it got dropped from a height onto a corner of a Safe, and the top was very badly dented, so much so that the lid would not close properly. However, it carried on working as well as ever, and only ''died'' when a burst pipe leaked on it 7yrs later. i don't know if it was a unibody one, but their new one is.
@JOHUAJHOn The old ''war horse'' aluminium Mac that dad had got taken away by the insurance company when they replaced it with the new one..I am not knowledgeable about Macs, so it most likely wasn't a unibody, and i don't THINK it had a glass screen, as SOMEONE touched it with a biro, and made a permanent mark....poor old thing, it took some punishment, but gave years of faithful service!
expensive but lovely. the illuminated keys mean you can type in a dark place, and after using a p.c, Macs are much more responsive and infinitely better to use.
amazing yet the problem with aluminum is that its not very strong. soda cans are made from aluminum. Image crushing a soda can and seeing all the curves, folds, and dents. That same thing happens to mbps. They dent very easily.
@Raymint No, I don't mean they don't really think that much of their products, I mean Jony with his fake stammering and creased brow of hesitation. That phoney "genuine" performance. Either you're reading a script or not ... but don't try to pretend you haven't rehearsed anything before sitting down in front of the camera.
@erichighley - chill; Angret was just asking a question, and a fair one too; I'm also surprised this is cost effective - it never has been before.
A combination of massive volumes, advances in high speed aluminium machining, high-skilled and low wage labour in China, and Apple's big margins & prestige image makes this worthwhile and possible for them.
I love Apples designs, but hate their control freakery & overly aggressive legal people, so I'm unlikely to buy any of their lovely products.
Apple has gotten its popularity by making simple yet cost effective computers, that look nice. but is this more cost effective than plastic(knowing apple it may be so). but is it for cutting down costs, or for enviromental impact, or for its aesthetic design?. cause all other computers use plastic, cause its easy, cheap and the manufacturing process is cheap. so what apple are doing, is it better or not, cost effective wise?
@AngretLord You're a babbling idiot. Of course it's cost effective. In case you weren't paying attention, he states that the manufacturing process allows them to churn out a more uniform, platform that is delivered through an "assembly method that is simple enough [that we can] get it right every single time" (i.e. it's extremely efficient).
They are a major corporation that has one goal, raising profit margins. They aren't going to manufacture a product that isn't cost effective.

thats just cutting fluid
it lubricates the milling bit to prevent rapid dulling and overheating
it also clears debris away from the cutting surface
