It seems that they borrow alot of elements from the 1999 movie version of Beowulf in having Hrothgar being Grednel's father and the mother being a shapeshifting seductress. Although I think they do a better job of it when it comes to the writing and acting. I'm not saying that I wouldn't like to see an accurate verison of the story, but I have to say that they probably did the best job on some stuff compared to other adaptations of it. It's at least got enough to make up for the changes.
