my very first boyfriend, Joe Martinez, played this one for me back in 1974. Joe died five years later in a car accident. the music and his memory live on.
Oh, dear. This vinyl LP is in a box in the garage that I haven't opened in 10? years..... How could I have forgotten Chuck and Esther? Just gunna hafta replace it on CD! WONDERFUL!
memories of WRVR IN THE seventies----listening to ed beach or les davis playing this along with lonnie liston smith, gil scott-heron, al jarreau, trane, chick corea---man, those were the days
Can you imagine this live? How could you not want to dance and move around? The lyrics are great and when the strings come in...I just love it. My Dad played this for me as a kid and it still gives me goosebumps and I want to dance.
i love this song.....she's doing it justice.....i listened to "the land of make believe" by chuck mangione today for the first time in a long time ...and she's singing the vocals.....omg.....she sounds beautiful.... is she still singing?...i know she lives in maryland but what is she doing?.....funny...the singers today have nothing over the real old school singers....the people who should be singing aren't singing....this woman should be singing right now!!!!!!
does anyone have "Lullaby for nancy Carol"? It was on Chuch Mangione's land of make believe sung by esther satterfield...if so PLEASE post it ! Thanks you in advance :)
THIS FABULOUS ARRANGEMENT IS OFTEN PLAYED ON WBGO, JAZZ STATION OUT OF NEWARK, NJ. I BOUGHT THE OLD LP FROM EBAY BECAUSE NOTHING LIFTS THE SPIRITS AS THIS SONG CAN, ESPECIALLY PLAYED LOUD!!
this was the coat room song played every saturday mornin bout 11am when they opened the doors to the Gallery and let all the tripping children loose into the bright sunlight after dancing all nite friday nite,,, only to do it again on Saturday nite,,, ahhhh..the memories..
I have THIS VERY recording on a worn out LP from the early 1980's. Certain parts of the song on the LP are so worn out that I can't listen to it anymore.
Thank you for posting this. I used to frequent a disco in New Hope, Pennsylvania called January's back in the 70's and they played this at last call every night. It's a beautiful piece beside having a special memory.
When I was a little girl, my grandparents used to play this on their record player in the living room. I have liked the song ever since. Thanks for posting this!
Esta magistral obra de Mangione la amo la adoro y agradesco la hayan subido mas es una pena que no este completa, de todas formas me conformo con esta parte. Gracias!
Man,grew up this with Chuck and Esther "Classic"in the 70's.. Just love Satterfield's range and clarity, too bad it never gets the air time it deserves.. Spanky- Toronto
I bought this album when I was 20 and still living at home. My mum (since passed) used to play this song when I was at work.
My first albums I picked out were The Beatles Two and Leonard Bernstein's Peter and the Wolf and Nutcracker. I consider myself really lucky to have had my mother's musical influence or I would never had the priviledge to have listened to Chuck Mangione.
Haha we are playing this in band! I love this song, but I think that the lyrics are quite wierd! I told my band director I think the guy that wrote it was high at the time, and my band director agreed! Lol.
I still can see her, backed by Chuck at Ontario Place in Toronto, playing in the open concert against the night skies! So vidid a memory - hard to believe that it was over 35 years ago!
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. If you can get part of it posted, you can get all of it. You cn do it!! I know you can! It's worth it!!
Thank you for posting this song! Sang this in '78 as a solo for jazz ensemble in high school. Encore in '79. Many, many wonderful memories revived! Awesome! Chuck rules!
thnx for posting this BEAUTIFULLLLLLLLLLLLLL song. I was looking for it on utube for a while but couldn't find it. It's now going straight onto a CD ;) to play in the car---yeaaaa!!!
i love dancing samba style to this, in socks on a highly polished floor...with a sprinkle of baby powder for easier gliiiide! dance this many years ago at the SAINT in NYC!
Stupendous. I loved it in 1975 and love it today ... have the album, but haven't played it in decades (nor any of my LPs) .... I love this. A breath of fresh air ...
this was part of the 70's to me. Let's see you contemporary punks make music like this (melody? what's that?)
This was an awesome recording / performance by ALL. I have the cd and BLAST it every single time I play it. Just have to. Ester Satterfield provides a beautiful vocal.
I would LOVE to find a video of this performance - can anybody help ? I have left directions in my will...that this song should be played at my funeral. Not so much as a tribute to me; but, to the amazing talents I have enjoyed over the years and to be shared with my loved ones....along with "Everybody's Talkin"(theme from Midnight Cowboy, Fred and Harry's versions), "Beyond The Sea" (preferably Benson's cover), "Imagine" (R.Crawford's cover), & "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"(K.Rankin's cover)
One of my favorite recordings of all-time ! I admit, I'm envious of anyone who had the opportunity to attend a performance of these 2 great talents. This recording was going to be the wedding march for me and my fiance; since it was "OUR" song. However, she was killed by a drunk driver on Christmas Day in 1974....so, our dream never came to fruition; and, I couldn't listen to it for a long time. Now, it still brings tears; but also beautiful images and memories of the idealism we shared. TY
What wonderful memories this brings to me. I was so very fortunate to be at the San Diego concert when he first introduced this amazing woman. She sang this song and the crowd went wild!!!!!! What an AMAZING CONCERT it was. Also loved that his dad was at all his concerts back then, selling his son's tee shirts, hats, posters etc.
And to Redmule 21- it is the fugel horn that he plays You Were Right!
What is part 1, this is all I remember. This is a pure love song. A gift. Thanks.. L5, from menlo park, circa 1977, with the silver jaguar, u taught physics, are u out there?? we used to listen to this record.
Thanks for posting. It's hard to find versions of this song, even though it is one of the best songs ever written, IMHO. I've never heard this version before and it's really nice. I usually listen to the Chuck Mangione Live at the Hollywood Bowl version and the one from Blast.
No you are missing 2 verses, the Solo and orchestral intro. and the Bridge. This was concert with the full Rochester Philharmonic. This is an iconic album, and the other treat is the "Legend of St Bernard" which achored the other side of this album.
@parrelientje A great deal....You see We grew up in S.E. Washington D.C. Very few can relate to the magnitude of how this woman's lyrics shaped our lives.
