According to Caroll Spinney, the puppeteer for Oscar, this first model was made for left-handed puppeteers. It caused him trouble since he wasn't left-handed, so they made another one(still orange) that you can see in the 1969 version of "I Love Trash."

Grover as we know him did not debut until Season 2, Season 1 had an early version of him with greenish-brown fur, a voice more resembling Cookie Monster's and was called Fuzzyface. Hope that explains!
