I was hearing this song while working on my bikes in the garage. In fact, it was playing from a car radio I installed to my bicycle. It was tuned to 93.1 Doug FM (WDRQ Detroit, of which the same frequency and call letters played dance music that was reminiscent of Eurodance, Jock Jams and A Night At The Roxbury-like songs back in the late 90s.).
I came here because I'm an 80s baby and remember hearing this song when I was a kid growing up in that awesome decade. Great to see that this song has been used in many other places today so that others can enjoy it!
Peter Gabriel told me to come here. And I came. Genesis asked me to make an appearance as well. I told Phil, I had to wake early, but Mike insisted I make an appearance. Enjoy the music.
@jacksonbiscuit Because it's like a Miles Davis tune :-) Really. This is more like a tune that Marcus Miller would write for Miles Davis (like Tutu). Gabriel is a killer musician,
@bnz500 as much as i LOVE phil collins, they are two totally different singers, although they were both in genesis, there music is not even close to similar, but both, very good, in my opinion, so peter is not trying to be phil collins wanna-be at all...i recommend listening to phil collins at perhaps at least once?
I thought that it was the late Canadian Dominic Troiano who was singing that song at first because it sounded like Dominic Troiano much more than Peter Gabriel.
Yeah, it's all black rapshit or freaks of nature like lady gaga, or commercial exploited crap like justin bieber that dominate the hitparades. Bring back the artist of the 80's, because they realy need to teach those modern artist a lesson in how to make some good music, that wil be remembert, even over 25 years!
Hell, bring back the entire 80's, as in life and television, because that was the best decade this planet ever has known!
@3DPeter There was a lot of schlock in the 80's...I think that's when modern pop really started to turn into unimaginative crap. That said, I really enjoy some of gaga's stuff...bieber and his manufactured muck not so much, but he's got a nice enough voice, and maybe we'll see an improvement as he grows into a man. Dad's collection when I was a kid included everything from handel to coltrane to sepultura. Expand your horizons a little, and you might find your opinions aren't written in stone.
that was way better than those stuppid tatoo's everybody is having these days, because those were fashion statements wich everybody can get rid of, after that fashion wears out. Something the idiots of today can't with their tatoo's. I almost can't wait until we are 10 years ahead when the first show comes that is named , so you got a tatoo? ( and want to get rid of it) were kids from the 90's regret that they took a tatoo because it was fashion in the 2000's.
btw, i wouldn't change my ties for those rediclious clothes some people wear today. Now for example take that mike dude from west coast customs. I mean look at those trowsers. It's like i'm looking at an adult that looks like a 5 years old, pants that are to wide and to short. Or look at al those idiots with a beard these days. it's like they took our mullets, and glue it under their chin. No way, that i would walk around like that.
i like eddy murphy, michael jackson, tina turner, jackson 5, 6 , 7, you name it, so go fuck yourself! And you know why i like them? It's because they are real artist or actors who realy can sing or act, somthing i can't say about todays rap artist. When i would rant about white trash nobody would give a shit, but as soon when a white dude critisize a black person, it's racism in the eyes of the left wingend mofo's like you! Wel, cry whatever you want, because i don't give a shit!
@3DPeter Relax dude, I was fucking with you. I hate rap too. And how do you know I'm left winged or not from that single comment? Making big assumptions there dude.
I really, really liked this one. I actually preferred it over "Sledgehammer" though that, too, is good and was a success. I find this song very appealing. Thank you for this post.
No, no, no. It's not a comment on greed. It's about the sheer egotism you need to rise above the ordinary. It's terrifying. And we wonder why the hugely successful are such egotists. It's the fuel that's needed to get you across the finish line, because everyone will hate you and criticize you along the way for daring to be something big.
I love how this song can be interpreted as either a guy pulling himself out of life in poverty or a commentary on the excesses of the 80's Reagan era America. I mean, what was the catch phrase of the generation? "Greed is good."
he was one of the first off the mark to see the big dollars comin from CD's and also MTV and he knew it'd take cash to make the vids - the toons are great but this guy So knew what he was doing... like stevie winnwood, clapton, collins, etc...
Gabriel had the pulse of the free spending pay later '80's - his "Wall Street" - that man never missed a trick but boy did the rest of the world . . .
Until I heard this I thought Pete could make anything cool, just look at Sledgehammer and Shock the Monkey, they're just pop songs but they still have some credibility and they're still awesome songs but I really don't have much good to say about this song.
ive got the original-record "So"! He is my favourite musician. and this song is still classic and one of my favorites; my favorite song ever is "RED RAIN"! What do you think?
This song was very commercial, BUT, listen to some of the lyrics. "and my Heaven will be a Big Heaven, and I will walk through the front door"! Pretty powerful words. Peter is AWESOME!
@Deadsurfr Gabriel had the pulse of the free spending pay later '80's - his "Wall Street" - that man never missed a trick but boy did the rest of the world . . .
@Deadsurfr - you may not understand the times in which this song was released. Of course it's commercial. It was released during height of the "go-go" '80s. For once, I don't blame an artist going commercial. It's an affirmation of the times in which it was released and a satire at the same time. Ha!
