  • would it be possible to play duke nukem 3D on a new computer?

  • Hey, LGR!

I picked up a 386sx pc with vga graphics, and 896KB ram. I need help finding ram chips for it. I dont know that interface they are, so if you could help me out, what were the common ram interface for the early 90's

  • @fortifythamind There were several, but most common for those 386-era machines was 30-pin SIMMs.

  • @phreakindee Thanks! I just ordered a 4 meg chip. I think that should help me while running veiwmax.

  • Best DOS Games:

    - Doom 2

    - Jazz Jackrabbit

    - Carmageddon

    - Duke Nukem 3D

    - GTA 1, 2

    - Wolfenstein 3D

    - Pac-Man

  • Best DOS PC:

    - 64 MB or 256 MB HDD

    - 8MB or 16MB RAM

    - CD-ROM and\or Floppy

    - 1MB or 2MB Video Card

  • @TommyDDoom Not bad. Unless you want to play the later DOS games, like Blood, Carmageddon, or Quake very well at least. 32MB RAM and a much larger hard drive would do wonders. And you left out CPU, which is a pretty vital stat. For that setup I'd recommend a 75-100MHz 486DX/4, although a Pentium will be better for the aforementioned later DOS games.

  • Everyone! Get a Datel 486! It runs DOS, has a 5 and a quarter inch floppy, a 3 and a half inch floppy, and a quad speed CD drive! I got mine for $10!

  • @MasterGamerful Or literally any one of thousands of comparable clones! :D That's the thing with PCs... no need to list any brands because you don't really have to. A PC is a PC is a PC, for the most part.

  • @phreakindee Lol! Thanks for the clarification! BTW, your vids are awesome! I'm a proud subscriber!

  • nice background music

  • do you know a dos coputer similar to Bob F. Wiegelson

  • witch name is the dos computer at 3:33-4:09

  • @jp71268 It's one I built. I guess we can call him Bob F. Wiegelson.

  • what monitor should i use? I found an old laptop, which is a 390x thinkpad, installed mortal kombat ii and found the graphics to be quite pixelated. the native resolution I believe is 1024x768, that seems a bit high for older games, maybe it's the fact that it's not crt as well, but which is more the case for the pixelation? I'll be up(down)grading to a more proper retro machine in the future, so is the problem the high resolution or the fact that it is not a crt monitor? or both? also, subbed:)

  • How come your cases are awesomely clean and white? I have some PC's that have yellowed horribly.

  • @viperxeon I keep them clean and out of sunlight and I don't smoke. That helps tremendously. Otherwise, it's just up to the kind of flame retardants that were used in the plastic where they were made. Some plastics have a tendency to yellow no matter when, and for that you'll just need to use some Retr0Bright solution on them.

  • is there some way of a spliting a file into smaller pieces so i can fit it onto 1.44mb floppy disks so u can transfer it to a computer running dos?

  • @charger334 Yes, I use a program called HJSplit. It works perfectly for splitting DOS files up for floppy transfers.

  • dat Jazz...

  • why dont you just get dos box and a floppy disc player

  • Are you ever gonna rewiev like C&C1 or Red Alert1 on DOS?

  • There are a few decent windows PC games, so DOSBox is okay for me on a modern PC, so I can play Darklands AND Witcher 2!

  • Man I would really love who could take a very giant HARDWARE EMULATOR that take all hardware, and plug-ins for each of these games!

Like the firsts Vodoo 2 dual (like sli today), that was awesome and imcomparable like Motorhead on Glide2x , that was fantastic!

I would really love to play someday these. ah... thats it. See ya.

Wihtout voodoo hardware that games was very parcial.

  • @gfcgamer Hmmm... You mean like the Carte Blanche for the Apple II? It could be done, but not cheaply.

  • This video is extremly useful, because recently, I thought about getting really into old-school PC gaming. Still, there is only one thing that buffles me. I heard, that running Full Motion Video kind of games is really tricky, and only very specific PC's can run them. Do You have a general Idea, what PC is the best to launch those ? I would be extremly greatful. Sorry for my english by the way, not a native speaker :P

  • @garrysmoder1 Sounds pretty sweet to me!

  • Man, I want dos pc VERY BAD, but no one sells them here in Lithuania, and buying from eBay for me is a pain in the ass, because the money convertion to US here costs a fortune, then the computer travel trought the earth can damage it and the shipping price would cost a lot too. So it's like buying a new one in the store at the time.

  • one word: DOSBOX

  • by the way... love the simcity 2000 music.

  • 486 dx 4 100.... what else ?!

  • Hey dude!

Do you think a pentium mmx is too fast for a lot of dos classics? I would love to go from doom 2 to sierra adventure games to commander keen and the original duke nukems.

    'what do you think?

  • I have an IBM PC 300 PL. It has a Pentium II (400Mhz), with an Nvidia Geforce2 MX. I'm not to sure what it has for sound, but if you set the sound in games to a Soundblaster, it works most of the time. It has Windows 98SE and DOS installed. This thing is AMAZING for playing games from the mid 90's to early 2000's. I LOVE THIS MACHINE!!!!!!

  • I have a NEC Versa 2200C

    with win 95

  • dat 3dfx case

  • I got an old industrial PC from my Company, a Pentium MMX. It´s really amazing and pretty rare i guess. It has not a common mainboard. It has a PICMG board.

CPU and RAM are on a full size CPU card. I´ve never seen anything like this before :)

Just turned it into a DOS game machine. Also added a Soundblaster 16 and a Voodoo card :)

Im very happy with that thing.

  • Some questions.

    1. If one was to install DOS on anything around a Pentium II up- how much of a problem would this be (only a few probs so far but...) and will the usual slowdown programs be insufficient for this level of machine?

    2. If I were to try adding a 5.25" floppy drive to a PC build, will the interfeace connecting it with the motherboard be the same as for a newer 3.5" drive?

  • @thelyniezian If you're going for a DOSbox from that era don't go farther than a Pentium 3, P2s and P3s have significant advantages to other computers.

Most of the higher-end and older boards will have ISA slots for the sound cards will need.

Higher-end P2 and P3 boards (with preferably a 440BX chipset) by turning off the L1 and L2 cashe, and messing around with the clock speeds and varying CPUs you can get a system that can easily slow itself down to around a fast 286 all the way to a 486DX4

  • I found a complete Macintosh 128K system

For $1.00 XD. Should I buy it?

  • @sadmegatron2300 If you have the space and can see the point (are Mac 128k's really any good?)... just if it's on eBay or some other auction site, don't bet on it staying $1.

  • @sadmegatron2300 I'd also suggest it at least have a reasonable chance of looking like it's working, unless you want a display piece.

  • xp

  • @phreakindee Too bad we both live way too far from each other. I'm from South America D:. And yes, most do stay with the newer stuff, vidya I sorta find very generic, excessively repetitive, lacking the overall depth that characterized the '80s/'90s/early 00's. I wish I could say "Damn my biasing nostalgia", but even now I'm playing old stuff I never played back in the day when I was a kid, either because I didn't know such titles or because I didn't get to buy them. PS:Your reviews are awesome

  • OLD LADIES + CHURCHES = Shit loads of dos boxes.

  • @frenchpet what you mean?

  • It'd be awesome to get to know Clint IRL and share old school stuff with him. You heard me, phreakindee.

  • hey, a couple months ago i picked up an hp vectra, which i want to use for playing some old video games on. Specs: celeron 900mhz, 256mb ram, nvidia geforce 2 64mb (pci), windows 95 and intergrated sound. i would like to use this for playing dos games on, only because of the intergrated sound there isnt any sound when i play dos games. i would add in a sound card only my pc doesnt have any isa slots. so can anyone reccomend a good pci sound card thats compatiable with most dos games?

  • @LL1K Sound Blaster 16. It's what I used in my Vectra.

  • @LL1K That PC is WAY too powerful for Windows 95 and DOS games. You'd be better putting Windows 98SE on it.

  • @ImperialProductions cool ill install windows 98 on it and see how it goes, also how do you think it would fare if i used it for mid to late nineties pc games, eg like quake 3 etc.

  • @LL1K It would work like a charm!

  • @LL1K

If there are no ISA slots, then I'm sorry you cannot get sound to work with DOS games. The only thing you can do is to find an old Penitum 1 or 2 machine or similar that actually has those slots.

And for the record, I would personally recommend getting an original non-pnp SB16 ISA card as those actually have TRUE OPL chips and not the fake weird ones you find on an AWE64.

  • I would stab you in the neck for your collection of video games sir. I've never felt so jealous.

  • Ha! That background music was from SimCity 3000! I think it played when you where close up to the urban part of the city

  • Comment removed

  • I love the look of old pcs. I wish we could still buy cases like those. Cool video. I remember those days. My first PC was a Tandy 1000 ex in 87 and I built a a 386 sx 16 in 89. The Tandy still runs!

  • i remember bein 10 years old and rewriting the config/autoexec files to get that extra bit of conventional mem just to run a game. Then my dad would come home and not be able to do his finances because I shut down all his resident programs and he'd be so pissed. I later learned how to have dual boots. :^P Now...I just use DOSBOX.

  • can you play the games on modern computers

  • Black thorn all the way man great shooter platform :D

  • 2:08 HOLLY SHIT! These computers look like brand new! No more yellowish, creme colour, just solid white. I noticed now, rewatching your videos once again... xD Kinda slow :D

  • I remember an ad from that HP Vectra.... It even had music-compising software..

    That was aound 1995

  • I found a great Toshiba Pentium 1 laptop running windows 95 for just 10 dollars on ebay. It has a CD drive, it's got Office 97 preloaded on it, and its battery, believe it or not, still works and lasts like an hour and 30 minutes.

  • I have a Soundblaster AWE 64 Gold with 12MB memory, do you guys think a Gravis Ultrasound would be a useful upgrade? (Machine is a Celeron 500, 512MB RAM, Intel AL440LX, S3 Savage 4 with DVI output)

  • @schaapjebeh Only if you're really into the old-school demoscene stuff, very few games took advantage of an Ultrasound, but those that did sounded awesome.

  • Watching these videos always make me think... how the hell do these things still work? I just had my mobo fry after only 3 years of usage, how are these 20 year old PCs still intact?

  • @Gregunit You know the phrase "they just don't make 'em like they used to"? It's not just an overused catch-all motto! Many things really did have a higher build quality back then. Otherwise, I don't know. Bad luck I guess.

  • @phreakindee

There's speculations that parts of the whole "reduced quality" thing is actually a hidden cash-grab scheme so that if the less savvy consumer has broken hardware, these days their first thought is to buy a new replacement. Can be compounded with the careless consumer just plain not taking care of their hardware.

  • @phreakindee I've noticed that. My Commodore 64 lasted 20 years without fault. Also, I was able to use my 8086 for 7 years before a chip blew. But now I can barely get 2 years of flawless service from the most modern quadcore! Modern computers are just cheap plastic toys that are designed to fail.

  • @phreakindee This is true. Considering PCs of the time cost 3-4x what they do now, manufacturers focused on quality a bit more, whereas nowadays, sub-standard components are used with the intention of the consumer buying a replacement within a few years anyways.

  • I love your Voodoo machine. Bad ass.

  • @Gregunit

Simpler hardware, fewer things can go wrong. A new chip will have 100's of millions of transistors, even billions, these old chips and motherboards numbered in the thousands.

  • @Gregunit Things built back then were built to last not some xbox that gets red ring of death now they break of course but in 98 i had macintosh from the early 80's like 81 or 82 but it did every thing i played old ass games til night fall hell i was like 9 years old but loved it in fact i got it from a friend mom who said here you go becuase at that time i loved computers and i wanted one so bad shit i would love to be born back then shit worked and still does people took pride in there work

  • i picked up a hp pavilion with me and a packerd bell with 98 and i put ms dos on the packerd bell but i cant find sound drivers...

  • Building an old school DOS computer is much cheaper than buying one, plus you can choose what goes it the computer too.

  • old guy in holland with msdos computer and an ipad

    /watch?v=8IdXcD4X7bQ

  • @MrGameboy1989 Ha, now that was awesome. Thanks for the link!

  • simcity 3000 music! r.i.p maxis

  • To me, DOS games mean 320x240 CGA/EGA/VGA gfx, Adlib/SB + PC speaker sound support, running on a 386 or 486 with 640kb - 8mb ram. DOS games from 1995-98 are just too 'improved' to be taken seriously as a DOS program, most of them didn't run even with DOS 7 boot disk (all necessary drivers loaded) on a Pentium 166mhz 16mb ram, they run only in Windows 95!

  • I have a Compaq Presarion too! (I found it about a year ago on the street, it didn't fit into a garbage can. My mother was very angry when she saw what I a bringing to home again... :) I find that installing Windows 95 on it is was a big mistake.

  • 2 poeple think Windows 7 is Awesome. One question. WHAT IS SO AWSOME ON SEVEN? It sicks and its slow!

  • @merkur32123 I like Windows 7 (I have a PC with it...) but I also like MS-DOS but Windows 7 is not slow.

  • Device=hemp /smoke

    Devicehigh=ME!!!!!!

  • @PkInWild Oh yeah, it's overkill for most DOS stuff. Anything faster than a 486DX/33 is probably more than you'll need. But that one's for playing the last DOS games from like 1997-98, like Carmageddon, Shadow Warrior and Quake, which actually push it to its limits, even with a Voodoo accelerator card installed. It can still play the older stuff too though, so long as it's not one of those games that requires a slow CPU to play.

  • @PkInWild Do you mean the tower shown a little after that? That was a 400Mhz Pentium II MMX

  • hey, where did you find all your classic pc's im looking to play some games from the 90s only i cant seem to find any on the internet, there are lots of pc's from the 80's eg amiga atari st

  • @LL1K Well, I found them on the internet mostly... forums like the Vintage Computer Forums, other YouTube members, many on eBay, AtariAge users, but also local thrift stores, Craigslist and friends. Anywhere and everywhere really.

  • 2 people have windows 7

  • I remember that HP Vectra machine, my step father had one at his work and also former neighbours had one too. In what way did you modify the computer to run DOS games?

  • @Lachlant1984 I downgraded the CPU from 233Mhz to 120Mhz, installed a pure MS-DOS 6.22 OS, and installed an SB16 sound card. Just to make things nice and smooth for the vast majority.

  • the 3dfx machine looks awesome :D

  • Ahh yeah, the memories. I remember when i got my first own PC, it was in 2000 and i was in fifth grade. Someday my dad came from work and brought me one of the very old 486's they got rid of and asked me if want it. i Loved it, later got me some old Dos Handbooks, expanded the ram to 4Mb , installed an 500 mb Hard Disk and an 4xspeed CD drive to play Simon the Sourcerer,Doom, Indy and Settlers.

  • Hey, awesome video and channel! Can you use modern CD-ROM drives with the old computers? I would hate to have to use my CREATIVE LABS 2x that I used back in the day- it took 7 mins to load Wing Commander, and it took me only 30 seconds to die!

  • @Parsec994a So long as it is IDE, and whatever you have it plugged into is ATAPI compatable.

  • @Parsec994a I once put my CD-reader/writer/re-writer/DVD-reader/writer/re-writer drive into a 486...

The command.com and Norton Commander 5.5 even recognized data DVD-s, just with limited filenumber to show...

  • I like the Tseng Labs ET4000 graphics cards as well.

One thing that I've found was my framerates for DOS games were better on my fast 133 Mhz 486 and early Pentium (75 Mhz) systems when I increased my RAM from 16 megabytes to above 24 megabytes to 32 megabytes.I know it seems strange but the framerates were increased in many games (almost doubled).

One of my favorite DOS PC's was a slimline AST Advantage and also a slimline Dell Optiplex desktop.

  • @IntelgratedShiznit ok, thanks man.

  • I use a windows xp, might upgrade to windows 7. im just curious, though, see i adore DOS FPS ames, like doom, blood, etc, but the ones that run on the doom 2 engine lag like crazy. but wolfenstein runs perfectly (for the record all of my DOS games are pirated from gameswin.org or from google search)

i heard that there was a slow down option, maybe theyre just running too fast, but could you give me some advice on how to run those games on a modern pc?

  • god, that is so weak compared to today...But twice as RAD

  • you can play skulltag and zdoom for doom.

very good mods..my god the mods!

  • @phreakindee Yes,but can you run Doom 2 on the highest settings running on multiple windows with an FPS of 280?

Only the cool kids can do that...

  • In my opinion the best way to get the best out of a DOS machine is to build it yourself

First thing is of course, the motherboard, any modern one with the right expansion slots will work (necessary: AGP, ISA optional: PCI)

Then, a CPU that will fit into the motherboard (single core is recommended, multi-core requires DOS extenders

Now for the graphics card, for 2d games and want Windows 3.1, I recommend a S3 Savage 4, for 3d games, a 3dfx Voodoo Banshee

I'll finish this in a reply to this

  • @Andthatswhymacssuck Next is a sound card Note: this is optional More games: Sound Blaster 16/AWE32/AWE64 Better quality: Gravis Ultrasound PnP Pro (note: rare) Drives: Hard drive that fits in the motherboard Optical drive internal 3 1/2 floppy drive External 5 1/4 floppy drive (optional) Also, you will need a case that fits your motherboard Finally, you will need the OS: I recommend FreeDOS 1.0 Optionally Windows 3.11 for Workgroups upgrade (requires lots of drivers)
  • Hi there, love your channel :) I have an old Windows ME with Intel Pentium III (3) Will this be able to play "A-Train?"

  • @TheLogicman1 Hey and thanks!

A-Train is a pure DOS game, so Windows ME wouldn't be the best choice to try and run it. 98SE or lower is the very latest I've gotten it to work with somewhat, but really the best is a pure DOS environment... it can be quite particular.

You'd have far better luck running it on any newer PC with the DosBox emulator.

  • Just a question, today i got my very first old computer, gifted by one of my friends, it have a celeron 256 mhz, 32 mb of ram, floppy drive (3.5) and cd drive. I just need to buy a sound blaster 32 ISA and a new HD, then the computer should work properly with any dos games, but the question is, if use a geforce 2 as videocard , did i need to do something special or i have to get an older card? then where i can find some CD setup of dos 6.22? sorry for my bad english.

  • @01EmptyBox A GeForce 2 will likely be fine, most games will see it as a VESA/SVGA-capable video card from my experience. You shouldn't really need any drivers or anything, other than maybe some standard VESA drivers for a game or two and usually the game comes with them - but this is a minor issue you probably won't run into.

As for a setup for DOS 6.22 on CD, it was only on floppies. But you can download the installation from places like Vetusware's website and burn it to a disc if you want.

  • @phreakindee Thanks for the answer! I simply installed dos 7.1 cd install ver, everything works fine, tested blood, duke3d, doom and all of them runs whitout problems. i only had problems with keen4, fucked ups colors, i thinks caused by the geforce 2 non detected well... Will check that soon.

Keep your videos up, you're an awesome guy! thanks again.

  • hey can you do a sega master system review?

  • SOUND BLASTER!!!

  • does anybody remember an fps from 94 i think called bad toys i only know of this because the computer i use to run dos games had it and i didn't even know for a few years but its pretty fun with some creepy ass sound effect every five minutes

  • i want to play duke nukem, wolfenstein 3d, and doom, should i get a 486?

  • @rejectofsoul24 Are you talking about the older Duke Nukem games, or Duke 3d? I'd recommend a 486 at least 66MHz or higher. But, to really keep Doom and other 3d games running at top framerate, go for a true Pentium1. Especially if you're talking Duke 3D, go for 133MHz+. If you want to run Duke 3D in highres, you'd probably want someting 200MH+ or even Pentium2.. not sure exactly. Wolfenstein or the old Duke games are much weaker and should run great on any 486 I think.

  • Very informative! I kept a few mobos from the old days and sold the large towers since I just didn't have the space to store them.

Man, those were the days. I still remember running out to buy a $300 SB Awe32 and spending $600 on 16MB of RAM! :P

  • HURRAY FOR SOURCE PORTS

  • Just a quick question.

I am planning on using a Pentium-3-based computer for ALL of my retro PC gaming (so games from 02 and back pretty much), and I was wondering just how good of a job slow-down utilities do for old DOS games.

Also keep in mind I have the old os's and managed to score a OEM copy of windows 3.11 (not for workgroups).

  • I don't like the slowdown utilities on anything faster than a Pentium. They work fine for slowing things down when the PC is moderately faster than what you're trying to play. But when you start slowing it down 90%+ you get choppiness issues with many older games and post-Pentium II CPUs.

  • @phreakindee Alright, thanks for the advice. Thankfully, I can easily obtain a Pentium 166Mhz comp.

  • @phreakindee After doing quite a bit of research on Vogons, I've noted that a lot of people have been experimenting with Slot 1 boards and using their various BIOS and jumper settings to slow them down.

Anyway, they have found that the L1, L2 cashes can be turned off and it will slow down the PC to a fast 386 - a Pentium depending on what CPU you're using and what FSB speeds you're using (They also found a way to mod a 66Mhz FSB) It would seem that if you're not BIOSphobic that may be a solution

  • This is why I have 4 DOS PC's

    IBM 5150 w/ DOS 3.3

    IBM PS/2 286 w/ DOS 6.22

    IBM 300GL PI w/ Win 3.1

    and an HP Pavilion 7090 w/ Win95

Good video! I am an artist, but gaming is a big hobby of mine!

An even bigger hobby, figuring out how to display and organize all of your machines.

  • Wow, SimCity 3000 music at 00:50. Great game, that.

And I agree, you have to get the right computer for the right games. Like I have an old Toshiba Pentium 90MHz laptop which is fine for stuff like Imperium Galactica (even tho it says it needs a 150MHz Pentium!) but I can't play a lot of games on it as it only has a 2MB Chips & Technologies VGA Acellerator chip. But the sound chip is okay, 100% SoundBlaster 2.0 compatible.

  • Does win 3.1 run on true dos?

  • Buy an old Windows 95 / 98 PC. Those OS's run on DOS anyway.

  • Except that they don't run on "true DOS" and you'll run into a lot of problems that running, say, DOS 6.22 won't. It will do for many mid-90's games just fine, but for anything older than about 1994, you'll want real DOS in order to get around a lot of headaches.

  • First of all, GREAT video because I'd like to get PC for DOS gaming! But if you get one with Windows '95 already installed-and I would think it would be hard not to-can you still run DOS games on it, and if so, how?

  • In theory, if you upgraded from 6.22, you might keep most, if not all, of the DOS functions.

    Might it run well then?

  • Hah, I used to have one of those HP vectra computers but min was a 166mhz Pentium MMX with 16MB (or was it 32) RAM. Great video!

  • Was that some SimCity music I heard in the background? Great choice! :)

  • Yes it was, good ear! (and thanks! it's always a good choice IMO)

  • That was very informative indeed. And, hooray, new review soon!

Btw, this makes me want to do my own reviews ;)

  • It's so nice to see a Dos game reviewer like yourself on Youtube. That's probably why I subscribed in the first place. Because I'm one of those people who grew up with MS-DOS.

  • I appreciate the love! That was a huge incentive for me to get started in the first place: wanting to see someone review things that I grew up with, mainly DOS games.

  • Good and informative video, but not a lot of gameplaying sweetness in it. At least you could've had some game running on the monitors while talking about the computers and showing the specs..

  • Holy crap, this is like the video I've been waiting for...Lately I've been talking SO MUCH about how I want a classic DOS/3.1 computer to play all these old games like they should be played...This will definitely be a great help. Thanks again, man!

  • I was wondering, if its not to much trouble, could you tell me what a decent gaming pc specs would be for modern games now, such as running games like 'WOW' 'Dungeons and Dragons' you know, like MMORPG's. Also if you could give me a rough estimate on how much it would cost? I'm not an expert on things like this and you seem like the best person to ask ^_^ thank you for your time. I love watching your videos. Loyal fan!

  • Most anything made in the past 3 years should be just fine for MMO's. If you're looking to build one:

    Core 2 Duo or Athlon/Phenom x2

256-512MB GeForce 8800 or equivalent ATI card

    2GB RAM

    Windows XPSP3 or 7

I've used a similar setup for years and it runs things fine, even Crysis is quite playable. The rest of the hardware is pretty much whatever you want.

  • Thank you so much for your help, could you give me a rough price on about how much that would cost please? =] Lol sorry to be a pain, I really appreciate the help.

  • Likely $500-600 depending on options like the monitor, hard drive, case and power supply

  • I use a Pentium-S 133 with 128MB, a Matrox Mystique 4MB+Voodoo 1 4MB Combo and a 1.2GB Hard Drive. It runs great :)

  • Thanks for the video!

  • PLEASE do a review on Carmageddon! :D

  • Hey, what are you drinking in the introduction?

  • I don't recall precisely, but I know it was nasty but was all that was leftover in the kitchen or short notice. Diet Dr Pepper I think.

  • @phreakindee Thought so. :) I guess I drink normal and diet WAY too much, huh?

  • Ahhh...good old DOS. I can't tell u how many times me or my dad jjust totally screwed up the whole thing by typing a command wrong. U think it's ok but u really somehow unleashed all hell. But I also learned alot from DOS.

  • I just cant wait for your videos.

  • I hodgepodged a DOS Pc together.I had a nice little XP system, big HDD, limited everything else.Got it for free when a friend upgraded to vista.I pulled the HDD from it when my main system died that I was running the win7beta7k on.The XP pc's built in graphics couldn't support7,but it had2gb of RAM,the one that could support 7 graphically had 512mb of RAM, I was at quite a quandary.7 is very efficacy thou, and could run well on 512. So I put DOS 6.0 on xp's,and have dos running on 2 gb of RAM :)

  • Ps, if your wondering why not just swap the 2gb and 512mb RAM cards out, I tried, but they are different types of slots, and didn't fit :( Or I would have.

  • Nice!

  • i'd love that 3dfx case

  • I used to have an AMSTRAD PC 1512 from 1987 (DOS SYSTEM of course) but i don't know where i stored it (i only found the screen so far...). Quiet sad

  • *pretty sad

  • Interesting video(s). 5 * from FRANCE + subscribing

  • I certainly appreciate it, I'm glad you enjoy!

  • you're welcome

  • How do you record your games while running your pc?

  • My Windows 98 machine has an s-video out port, my Windows 95/DOS machines I use an SVGA->S-Video converter box (it's a scanline converter which accepts 640x480), and my IBM 5150 has a CGA card with composite output. I then use a USB capture device on my Windows 7 PC.

For the newest games I use the capture program Fraps.

Otherwise, I'll just use DosBox with a capture app like Camtasia, if the above options aren't feasible.

  • Thanks man! And very badass 3DFX case too!

  • If I'm mistaken, DosBox has its own recording utility built in, which works better than using Camtasia. If I recall, it just uses an AVI output, so as long as you have the proper codec, it works fine.

  • DosBox has a great capture ability built in, yes. But my problem with it is the format of AVI it uses for some reason doesn't work properly with my editing program, Adobe Premiere CS4. Either the video doesn't show or the sound and video are corrupt. It's strange, though I haven't tried it with Win7 so maybe I'll have to try again.

  • I had that problem with Sony Vegas until I downloaded and installed the Zip Motion Block Video codec. Then Vegas seemed to recognize it fine.

  • Installed it and I still get the same problems... I can capture through DosBox and then convert those ZMBV files to WMV or something that Premiere accepts. But it's annoying to do that when I can get the same or better quality through Camtasia.

  • That's odd, actually. ZMBV can be a pain to work with those, since it works through actually recording an image of the game.

If you have a working version of Camtasia, then it probably works fine; I hate paying for software :-P

  • I wish the frame rate was a bit higher on Camtasia, but it gets the job done. I hate paying too, but I've been using it for years for capturing PowerPoint shows and such and it works, so I've held onto that license!

  • I just realized I didn't download the codec before; if you go into the dosbox program files, go into the folder called ZMBV, right click on the INF file and click "install", it works.

The only real advantage I've noticed from this seems to be that the sound quality is improved; that might be psychosomatic though.

  • I tried it with the DosBox installer like that as well as through a codecs package, and it still denied it. Premiere really, really sucks for video many formats as well as capturing from certain devices... Thanks for the help though

  • I've never used Premiere, but Iove Vegas far too much to ever switch.

  • Sweet 3DFX case!

  • I think I've a Tandy 1000 with monitor for sale.
