"He (Toninho) plays such great voicings with such a cool time feel... I've often described him to other musicians as the Herbie Hancock of Bossa-Nova guitarists ..... In short, Toninho Horta is an incredible musician, the rare guitarist who understands harmony in its most intimate ways..."
"toninho [is one ]of my all time favorite people and musicians."
But he is a mutual influence on Metheny. Also he does stuff rhythmically on nylon guitar that very people in the world, including Pat, do. Pat called Toninho "the Herbie Hancock of Brazil," because of his masterful harmonizations.
Yeah, but he's still no where near Pat as a player. By the way that guitar Horta is playing is and Ibanez PM120 PM stands for Pat Metheny. Is there a Toninho Horta series Ibanez guitar? No comparisons here, Toninho is fine but he doesn't have the same tranning Pat has. Pat is also a PhD in music from Berkley and a Professor at the school. The man has dedicated his life to the craft, Horta hasn't.
I am pretty certain Toninho Horta has dedicated his life to the craft, especially on nylon string guitar, and all the great musicians he has played with in his career would attest to that. If you like Pat but have not heard it, you would probably enjoy some of Toninho's second record circa 1980 or 81, on which Pat plays on 2 tracks, and takes just fantastic solos. Take care.
See that guitar Horta is playing? That is an Ibanez PM120 series. PM stands for Pat Metheny series of jazz guitars. Does Horta have a series named after him by any chance? He is a good guitar player (he was better when younger) but he doesn't have the same level of Pat or the classic formal musical education. Pat has PhD from Berkley and is a professor at the University. I don't think Toninho reads music. There's no comparison.
Yeah....yeah...yeah...Toninho haven't come up with anything new in 25 years. I used to play this tune back in the day, better than he does. But I still go see him in NYC when he shows up every year, I actualy met the guy a few times. He does have that Clube de esquina quality, no doubt. I miss the late 70's and Brazil of those days, Beto Guedes and all those beautiful, mellow songs. It's all white...
