  • yes i bought this on vinyl too, and still have it, love it,

  • Oh how I wish I still had my marlow collection, but sadly migration saw the demise of my vinyl collection(all that punk stuff as well grrrrr) damn and Australia would have benefitted from a touch of Essex electro goodness !!

  • Oh wow, I have this on vinyl but I don't think I ever saw the video before!

  • It's very 80s, ironically enough. Lyrics are good though.

  • great vid !!!! I`ve got the vinyl.....saw him on the tube

  • Haha. I'm a girl and I've played Dorian Gray in a high school play. I've always loved the story and was glad to be a part of a project having something to do with it. I love playing evil characters.

  • VINCE CLARKE has arranged and produced the title track for Robert Marlow's forthcoming album 'Inside/Outside' and has also remixed one of the tracks, 'Home'. The album will feature ten tracks and two remixes. MARLOW has also announced a gig at Nottingham's Junktion 7 on November 14th where he will be supported by up and coming synth acts Electraset and One Moment. The show will also be the launch of the much anticipated 'Trans Continental Electronica' compilation of contemporary electro acts.

  • I was at Junktion 7 last night .... really great gig ... I have a copy of the new Marlow album ... it's fantastic !

  • im mates with rob :) cool guy

  • I can't seem to find the lyrics to this song. Can somebody send it to me please?

    :) Thank you.

  • I'll be there as well Yellowox.....Can't wait for the new stuff !!!!.

  • Marlow are to play a gig at Junktion 7 in Nottingham on Friday November 14th .... the headline act ... I'm planning on being there

  • Is this Klaus Nomi without make-up??

  • Wow, I have this song on 7". It's to obad it's so short. I could dance to it all day.

  • That's Patricia Page doing the backing vocals high pitches and all. I know I married her! :)

I hear Vince is a very cool guy to work with.

  • hey my name is Dorian

  • mine too!

there are just a few like us :D

  • thats so cool, Ive never met/talked to anybody with the same 1st name as me

its true, not that many people are named Dorian

  • haha i just met once one in croatia.

a women was shouting DORIAN, DORIAN and i looked behind and said "yes?", she was just looking at me (like wtf). then her son a little 3 yr old boy came and his name was dorian. that was the first and last time i ment someone. i love this name, im happy that my mother named me so :)

  • there's only a problem...in this video dorian has dark hair and eyes. but Dorian Gray has Blond hair and blue eyes!!! this video is good!!! Good job! :)

  • that comment made me very happy :D

  • I like Drian Gray!!

  • I like this CD, Some of vince clarke's best music

  • Robert Marlow was going to belong to Depeche Mode (he was in a band called "The French Look" with Martin Gore and Vince Clarke), but he left the band before they met David Gahan, formed the Depeche Mode and recorded their 1st album: "Speak and Spell". This song sounds exactly like DM songs from Speak and Spell!!!

  • Yeah-it reminds me of 'Blasphemous Rumors'.

  • Aside from the fact that Blasphemous Rumours wasn't on the Speak & Spell album :-p

  • Point

  • Only problem with this song is that poor old Basil died young.

    He'd seen too much.

  • I've always liked Dorian Gray. Did you see the BBC version, the one with Peter Firth?

  • Well done! This is amazing... I have the 12" version of this on vinyl, but I have never seen the video!

So are you saying this is now available on CD!?

  • yes, along with 10 other songs.

you can get it on Amazon for about 10 bucks, I think.

  • The Never-Out-Of-Fashion theme of Dorian Gray in a brillant synth-pop version

  • LOL Yeah

  • i just remember what song this reminds me of. it's depeche mode's "the meaning of love" in disguise, although i am not sure which track was released first.

  • this is a fun retro novelty single. not a work of genuis, but i love the classic eighties synth bits.

  • you should hear "Calling All Destroyers." although, I should actually make a video for that.

  • True. Both of these are great songs. Also fond of "Torch Team" an ode to Pyromania.

  • great to see this vid, and all the info from the

comments earlier...i bought 2 singles by RM when

they came out, 'dorian gray' & 'claudette', purely

on the strength of hearing that VC & ER were at

the controls. i wasnt disappointed, i know he had

average reviews, but his work deserved better success

than he actually got....glad to hear it made it to

CD in the end, i had no idea....i'm gonna get that !

    cheers everyone.

  • He's a synth pop genius!

  • Vince Clarke from Yazoo and DM is this genius.

  • it's half and half. Everything was arranged by Marlow. The sounds were by Clarke and Eric Radcliffe.

  • I believe without Vince Clark and Eric Radcliffe, Robert Marlow's lyrics and melodies would have never made it to tape, let alone a radio. I mean, they're cute and fun... but also pedantic and pedestrian. I love his album for the "Yazoo" feel of it, though. Robert's album, sonically, is pretty much a continuation of Yazoo.

Don't know about anyone else, but the odd-numbered tracks are the only ones I can listen to. The even-numbered ones, overall, sound like shiat.

  • meh. I think the fact that he was a friend of Vince Clarke was why the critics hated the singles back in the 80's. I mean, yes, they're kinda goofy, but compared to a lot of the bad chessy in those days, they're worth more than they have said to be. I can see what you mean about it being like Yazoo, but it has a faster tempo and less disco in it than Yazoo. If I had to compare, I would say that it sounds like early Erasure. Calling All Destroyers, sounds close to Oh L'amour.

  • I have no idea what critics thought of this, but I never pay attention to them anyway. I totally love half the stuff on Robert's album. And you're right, there was a lot of cheese happening then. Well, and now, too.

I just listened again, and I'm still hearing waaaay more of a "You & Me Both part II" than I am Erasure's "Wonderland." Vince's keyboards had graduated to the next generation by the time "Wonderland" was made...

  • I dunno. But either, it's agreed that Vince kicks ass, no matter what he does on a record.

which Marlow songs don't you like? because I think some of the even songs are awesome.

  • Indeed Vince kicks ass.

As far as the Marlow songs go, literally, I dislike every even-numbered track. They are just pretty horrible for me. The cheese and the schlock is handily overlooked when the odd-numbered tracks bust out a Vince/Eric gem, but not even they could save the tragedy that is known as the even numbered tracks. Droll, boring, unpleasant to listen to... I could go back and give them another try, though, I suppose...

  • meh. I, too, felt some lack of interest towards those songs. but now "Torch Team" is among my favorite (after Calling All Destroyers and Life in a Film.)

I think the main thing is that most of the songs are based off a lot of old 50's and 60's rock styles. that can get a little annoying sometimes.

  • *gasp* I love this song! Omg, if I only could send this to Sarrin-chan... lol my friend sent me this as an mp3, and I loved the song, and now I love this video! ^-^ a difinite favorite!

  • YEAH I love this! Also another song he made called 'Claudette' is a fave !

  • right on

too bad there's no videos for those singles
