Mighty Sam is one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. The whole band was just as nice. Anson and his wife are just a God Send. I feel for Anson. He was on Bluesville the other day doing and interview and he's still pretty torn up about losing Sam. They are the best folks in Blues. Love you Anson and band. R.I.P. Sam.
I think anson and his rockets are the shit! seen em, bout 10 miles from a paved road, do a show at a rancho that will remain nameless. needless to say, you have not HEARD anson and the jets until you have heard them 10 miles down a kalichi road in texas. All hail anson and his rockets!
One of the very best blues bands that have ever existed! Sam Myers is one of my favorites. And Anson, too. Since someone was asking, the song is "Blue Shadows Falling." I wish they would reissue this stuff on DVD. I'd buy it right away.
Great sounding blues band! I love Anson's beautiful guitar tone and sense of phrasing. He really captures the best of the electric blues guitar sound! One of my favorites!
Darrell was great but Sam gave the band the credibility it needed. He was a Blues legend before most of them were born. I've been following them since they were the house band at Poor Davids pub on lower Greenville Ave. in Big D and spoke to Anson at the Dallas Guitar Festival this past year. Sure do miss Sam, God rest his soul.
joeloftusblues: Put that vhs tape out on The Pirate Bay then. I mean you cant buy it and i bought all my Anson records legal. Met Anson and Sam once. Im really happy bout that...
I have this on VHS tape, from Rounder Records IIRC, its called American Blues. Out of print now, but its really great. Sorry Anson, but I stole a LOT of your licks off this tape! Great stuff!
Sorry drummerboy, I thought when the credits roll at the end it said Chicago. Whatched it again, didn't have the location. Great show, If I can figure out how to do it, I'll upload more of this concert.
Myers passed away in July of 2006. He was buried in Mississippi with his harmonica strap across his chest. Mighty cool. There's a great chapter on his in Josh Alan Friedman's TELL THE TRUTH UNTIL THEY BLEED.
Hi crawlinblind. Try Piedmont Talent 'dott com'.If you cant find anything there, mail them and ask! I heard that Anson & The Rockets would do something with Darrell Nulisch. They have a litle on this on the piedmontsite.
He's Pretty FLY for a White Guy! What Ya say? I was There in Freedom city with ya back in 86',......Did YOU steal my cooler full of Coors????? I bet it was you,......You look like the kind of person that would steal a cooler full of Coors. Its OK, We stole another cooler full of Pabst and Old Milwaukees! But you owe me a 6 pack of LoneStars,.....That was a gift from some guy with a long beard named Billy somethin or a nother,.......Rock On.
Ended up with Dave Alvin &the Paladins featuring Anson Funderburgh!!
5 hours of pure heaven, ended up with propably the most asskikkin' version of "Marie,Marie" ever played: -Dave on his knees in front of Dave Gonzales and Anson on Dave Alvisn's half-acoustic guitar.
I've been told that Anson is now gigging regularly again in Dallas with a new singer. As I'm in London, this isn't a great deal of use to me! With regard to Anson's influences, the main one that has been left out is early (ie 50s) B.B.King - probably even more of an influence than Freddie, Albert etc.
Had the honour of enjoying Anson and Sam in a Club in Hamburg, Germany (!) just a few years ago, an experience which for obvious reasons cannot be repeated. Learned one lesson from this: take any chance before it's too late!
Yep, I hear the B.B. influence but I've seen Anson many times and he can literally sound like anybody he wants. I've heard him do Chuck Berry and sound just like Chuck. One time I saw him and Sam go off the set list and play 30 minutes of T-Bone Walker tunes and sound JUST like T-Bone!
Anson is a mixture of practically every blues guitarist. He reminds one of Albert Collins, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy,Freddie King all at the same time. He chooses his tone really well too. So sorry to hear about Sams's death in July 2006. He was one of the last links to the legends like Elmore James.
@Bornysblues, I think it's more likely the other way around....I've been listening to Anson & The Rockets since the early 80's, and Blueswede is right - nobody phrases like Anson, he is a master of timing.
Unfortunately Sam passed awhile back---I had the great pleasure of seeing Sam sing with Anson in a little club on a tuesday night about 3 years ago---Sam couldnt have been a nicer gentleman--RIP sam
When I first heard Anson play I wasn't at all impressed. Thankfully I have now come to my senses and realise what a fabulous guitarist he is. Beautiful, economical phrasing, TONS of space and classic, biting licks. Pure class. Thanks Anson and thanks to bluesswede for posting this.
Really beautiful performance all around, lovely phrasing and spatial sensibility from Anson's whose playing reminds me of BB from 1955-56 when recording with the Bihari Brothers with a little of Buddy Guy's Artistic label sessions style..and Sam so fine, so fine!!!
What a pleasure to see and hear Anson! he has the gift of TONE TASTE AND SPACE!something many contemporary blues posers need to learn, would say this is 87-90 Matt Mcabe on piano very nice hope you have more
