There are so many idiots when it comes to chow chows. And no I'm not talking about the lady in the video... "if you shave a chow chow you'll kill it" GET A F***ING GRIP! Since when did shaving a dog kill it?! Chow owners seem to be the most 'precious' on the planet when it comes to their dog... They are a robust durable dog... Shaving them will not kill them. I know an owner in the uk who's chow lived to 13 without any health issues and he was shaved every summer.
What the heck is this? First- Your are using the wrong type of Clipper!. That clipper you are using is for "light" trimming, potty trails and pads of feet. Second- If your going to clip a chow or any double coated breed at least do it right!. Get a heavy duty clipper made for shaving a dog down and learn how to use it. Maybe this dogs coat would not look like a lawn mower went over it.
I have shaved my chows on occasion. I shaved Mikki chow's belly this year because she got into the brumble (sp) bushes. Other times I have not been well enough to groom her and off comes the pelt. It grows back. I don't let her out in the sun, early morning and late night walks only.
I have used the furmenator on my Bella she is Chow Chow Border mix and it does absolutely nothing. She is shedding more than a dog a day and I am not even joking, I brush her every other day and vacuum 3x a day. Its insane, Bella is a total inside dog, when she goes out it is to the bathroom and sometimes for a walk. So we don't have to worry about sunburn. We are shaving her today cause she is now getting hot spots.
Chows are prone to hot spots when its extremely hot. And when people forget to brush their dogs, matts have to be clipped off. I thnk what bugs me as shes using the clippers in a odd position. Not a very ergonomical way.
I shave my dog down once maybe twice a years just a lil bit and give her a good bath. my dog loves it. there's nothing wrong with a lil shave to remove matted hair. But this lady is doing it all wrong
its ridiculous to shave a dog just because "hes sheding" so the fuck what! you shed too! its a natural thing. as for that poor chow. ive no words except. you should be ashamed.
Oh my god! What a idiot, why she shave a chow? Why she just comb it a regular? Poor chow... But, why she take a chow, when she can't comb him regular basic and why she don't know how to groom chow!
(sry for mistakes, i'm estonian, i don't know english well..)
you should shave them in the summer! and of corse the animal wont burn coz it is shaved unless it was dun right down to the skin (which it wasnt) this is a good thing, other wize the dog would over heat and get VERY sick due to heat exastion!
Your comments are stupid. The Animal must be shaved so it can be cooler in the off winter months. It is obvious you don't have a Chow that lives outside and protecte you property, Thank you lady for the video. Send me an email. I have two white chows.
You're actually making him more sensible to the heat because you're taking his fur's protection away, both in terms of its regulatory function, but also in terms of sun protection. When a dog is shaved, they are much more susceptible to sunburn.
Buy a good rake and spend more time brushing him, he'll enjoy it better then the clippers.

@Wolfie238, how do you make a dog more SENSIBLE? You're an idiot who does not KNOW what you're talking about. There will still be a pelt left that will protect from the sun. If you knew what you were talking about you would have known that. If you have ever seen a dog get so hot that it can't move & will lay there & pee on itself: then you would understand why this is necessary. Please don't make an ass out of yourself by posting ignorant comments.
@tmomof6 I have not seen a dog get to that point because not only do I brush on a regular basis, and provide cold water at all times, I also make sure there is an area where the dog can cool himself down, either by using a small kiddie pool, shaded area, or if possible an air conditioned room. If people pay close attention to their dogs and notice the signs of heat exhaustion before it occurs, situations like the one you described can be avoided.
@tmomof6 And yes I know there is another layer of coat, it is called the undercoat, which all double coated dogs shed out during the summer. The top coat is rougher and design to protect the dog from hot or cold temperatures and various other objects that can irritate the dogs skin.
Do a google search of 'Shaving a double coated dog' and you will read all the reasons why shaving is not a good idea.

@Wolfie238, I read Google & go to sites when I DON"T know something. Which is obviously what you did. Shaving is necessary in some situations. PERIOD. I am not concerned with your "good ideas" or other putz's on google who think their way is the ONLY way. Work in dog rescue then come back & talk to me after a year about what's "right" "I PROVIDE COLD WATER AT ALL TIMES." What a sanctimonious ass. You may think you're educated but you obviously have no experience in this area & should STFU.
@tmomof6 I didn't get my research from Google. I got it from working as a dog groomer for 5 and half years, talking to vets, obedience instructors, and yes I did work in rescue. In fact I use to foster both dogs and cats/kittens.
As for me "STFU" You commented on what I thought, if you didn't want to hear my opinion then you should have never made that comment.
I will walk away now as I can see you are in a very bad mood and require a cool down period. Take Care!
@Wolfie238 I agree ... You guys don't make the mistake of shaving him on summer only to make him brave the heat better. Perhaps you don't know that the chow chow's thick coat is specially designed to protect him from heat and cold...Its undercoat helps insulate the skin....So if you did shave him it won't make him feel cooler...and will cause skin problems and sunburn

Don't listen to them. You know your Chow. I have 4 and when the HUMID weather starts up and makes them even more prone to hot spots, I get out the professional clippers and shave them into a puppy cut. Their breathing goes from very rapid to slow and even after they are cut. Even with every day grooming they pant so hard you can tell they are miserable.
They spend more time outside now (via doggy door) then they did with a full coat. Cripes, they are not show dogs!
