Ask the movie audience who didn't like Batman Returns by Tim Burton enough. Hence the studio decided the series needed a new direction and make it more "marketable" and family friendly. Joel Schumacher made the overrated (in my mind horrible) Batman Forever, which apparently made good money. So, Schumacher was given the chance to direct another Batman movie, with the sole purpose to make a whole lot of money from action toys. Had he had self respected he would have refused.
