Yes the Bowie version is good, I'm a great fan of Bowie. This is definitely a better vocal and I think even David would admit that. A Bowie fan I most certainly am but I am not niaive enough to believe that his talent is unsurpassed. He's pulled some desparate covers himself, Cactus for one. It's a contest that can never be concluded as Billy left this earth a good while ago. That's something some of you seem to be unaware of.
Okay, if you want so badly to put it like this overtly known (according to you) McKenzie guy sings better than Bowie and makes this song better than Bowie, suit yourself. Gosh. LOL.
You know, for things you love, it's easy to be generalizing. Bowie is a great experimenter; sometimes he hits, sometimes he misses. So, die-hard Bowie fans will say that Bowie's version is definitely better - because he is Bowie. But I say that this song is much better suited to Mackenzie's vocal style. You hit the pinnacle of fandom when you can objectively view your idol's strengths and faults. But kudos to both, and RIP to one.
@ninmat@stereoloov Bowie sang this song better than anyone could. Sorry if you love this guy, that's another story. be objective. bowie made this song, and this guy is singing it surely because he loved Bowie's. So, who are you anyways to contradict everything? Just because you like this version.
@crashhh9 Don't care if Bowie is more known than Mackenzie. Billy's voice is miles away better than Bowie's. And here he delivers such passion and feeling that's hard to match. Sorry you fan.
For Fionagogo: well that is a matter of taste... this song sounds like an 80s version of a timeless classic.
That said, for those who aren't familiar with Billy MacKenzie, check out "The Moon is on Ice" and "Capri Calling" by Yello - his vocals take those great songs to another level.
The late Billy Mackenzie doing Bowie's classic, The Secret Life Of Arabia, for the BEF recordings. Former Associate Billy had the perfect voice to take on Bowie.
You ask, who is this guy? Well who are you? Didn't know that there was such a musically ignorant person around! Anyway, Billy's voice is much better than Bowie's.

@Fionagogo Sorry, Fiona. Billy M (who was lead singer for new-wave band The Associates) has a very nice voice, but no one can hold a candle to The Gentleman. Bowie, after all, is Bowie
@Fionagogo Sorry, but I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree on that. Billy Mackenzie was a very talented fellow with a lovely voice, but The Gentleman himself (Bowie) has a voice like an angel. I'm sorry, but Bowie is Bowie and David Bowie is the EMPEROR of contemporary music -- not even the king. The EMPEROR. Bowie is EMPEROR
@Fionagogo Billy is a talented man, but Bowie has the voice of an ANGEL and he's the EMPEROR of rock-n-roll. If Elvis was King of rock and roll, Bowie is Emperor

WTF why is the record jumping? LOL
Quite good cover, if too gay overtoned. The original is miles away, of course, Bowie is Bowie, and Mackenzie is not that known, sorry you fans.
As I said though, not bad.
But the record is jumping, see to that. ;-)

@crashhh9 it must be youe ears that are jumping ,,because this recording is'nt ...

@crashhh9 今から30年前近くにBEFに夢中になりその時ビリーを知りました。すごくエモーショナルなボーカル あとBEFの2人のダイナミックなリズムアレンジ 今再び聞けるとは感激です。

mikeyp1230 2 years ago
this guy was a lovely friendly guy who lived in Dundee, near where I live. He had a lovely voice, but committed suicide in 1997, what a tragic waste

@Dawnthewitch I loved Billy and the Associates. What talent! And, yes, a sad waste. But his splendid voice lives on.
