  • I wanna buy a new amp. My budget is around 800$, so I'd prefer a combo. This amp is great so I'd appreciate if you could tell me the price. My other options are the Warwick Sweet 25.2, that I've already tried and loved it, the Gallien-Krueger MB212 or 115, or an Ampeg BA. I play mainly rock, grunge and metal, but I also love to play jazz and funk. I prefer tube amps and high-end tones, and I'd like to get the Joe Principe tone, from the band Rise Against. Which one should I buy?

  • Hi Ed, thanks for the most professional videos on the web. I have a question: what's the exact model of the Fender JB that you use in this video at 6:13?

More, how do you compare the Genz Shuttle tone with the Markbass tone?

  • Ed, tremendous playing, you are a great idol for a young bassist like me. :)

  • how many watts is this?

  • @Vizillar2505 - It's 600 watts into both cabs, 375 into one of them. The 9.2 head is 900 into both, 500 into one.

  • damn Ken...

  • 7:51 sounds like a Paul Jackson groove, I don't remember which.

  • @doudsbass - It's similar to Palm Grease...

  • @BassGuitarMag Thanks, awesome !

And this little combo appeals me but I'd like to see more of the Contour serie :)

  • could really go for a 210 combo review!

  • @MrSleazymoney - Well, maybe they'll send one of those too.

  • A trick of perspective made the amp look like a giant stack sitting back behind you...Then you reached out and put your hand on it. Whoa.

  • @lowendgenerator1 - Yeah, I worked on that.... nah.

  • good to see you again Ed

  • It sounds amazingly great! I started to check shops in my country but no 6.2 yet, also price for older versions seems quite nice, I'm curious how it will look like for new versions.

  • Wonderful tutorial man! Thanks for the cool tips and advice. I got a question though: which kind of microphone do you use for the upright Bass? (at 10:08"). Or in any case, which one do you recommend for a good jazz walking bass sound. Thanks again.

  • @abiromeroramirez - Microphone? Or do you mean pickup? Mics are great for studio recording, or for sending your sound to the house sound board, but can be very tricky for live amplification. I'm using a Rode NT2a mic on the amp, and on my bass I have a David Gage Realist pickup. I do sometimes use a Crown PG200 mic on my bass and feed it with the pickup into a Fishman Pocket Bass Blender, but you have to be careful with volume as it will feedback if too loud.

  • @BassGuitarMag Pick up! Pick Up! I meant Pick Up. (Sorry about that man. Its just a translation thing -in spanish we use the word microfono for both Microphone or Pick Up). So David Gage its your choice? Cool. I'll google to see where I can buy it. Maybe Amazon or musicians friend? Thanks again for your Help.

  • Hey Ed, have you tried the GK MB fusion?

  • @brunocoelhobass - Yeah, it's a good amp.

  • Comment removed

  • The Smith is sounding good! Wait... Rage Against the Machine? Lol

  • @brunocoelhobass Audioslave, actually, I think.

  • Hi Ed! you have mentioned in other videos that Genz Benz is really transparent and what you plug in is what you get. Could that be a negative feature for someone(like me) who has a normal bass and plays in a Prog Rock band? anyway, for what i hear this sounds awesome!

  • @mcatueno - That's why they invented pedals!

  • @BassGuitarMag good point, but what I meant to say is that wouldn't it be better another amp with a distinctive tone instead?

  • @mcatueno What would be better would be to get what you want. If you want a good, clean representation of your bass, this amp sounds like just the ticket. If you want an amp with its own signature tone...get one of those! Try lots of amps if you can, then buy the one you want!

  • @xMasterxRazorx Thanks man, the thing is that in my country there aren't many options available, so i'm considering ordering this baby from over seas, tough decision since i havent played it...

  • @mcatueno - That is your choice really. I prefer not to be locked in to a particular signature tone. Between different bass choices, eq, the tube gain, my hands, and if needed - pedals, I can get any type of sound I want out of the Genz. If I were using something like an Ampeg, it would always sound like Ampeg. That's not necessarily bad if all you want is that sound... but I like the flexibility of having choices.

  • @BassGuitarMag thanks a lot for the reply Ed!!

  • Flying there on the DB section. Flying. Well done.

  • hi Ed, im looking for a modern sounding pickups (more of EMG JVX Pickups) but for 6string bass.. a pickup with low punch but more clarity.. single coils will do but im open to check some soapbars too..

  • @jheremhiya44 - EMG makes 6-string pickups, not like the exposed pole JVX, but they sound like what you describe.

  • AUDIOSLAVE!!!!

  • It would certainly be a nice gig. Check it out on You Tube. Those guys definitely have fun. Best wishes.

  • Dammit Ed! Why do you always have to make we want the new GB gear? Just when I thought I was happy with my rig!!

  • Ed riffin' Audioslave? Nice!

Great review as always, and glad to have you back!

  • This amp looks like exactly what I want. I wonder how it would sound with a fEARful cab.

  • Sorry, my error. Looked like you.

  • @tmo7734 - Well, I'm AVAILABLE if he wants me!

  • Do I hear a bit of The Lemon Song in there? Great playing as always Ed. Glad to see you back in business!

  • Whoa, that upright tone is super sweet...

    I NEED THAT AMP!

  • Happy New Year, Ed. Thank you for continuing to do your videos. I find them as informative as your instructional materials. Also, I've noticed your participation on Daryl Hall's "Live From Daryl's House. Terrific concept and wonderful performances. Keep up the good work.

  • @tmo7734 - You must be talking about my evil twin. I'm not involved with Daryl's House.

  • Im not sure if you did a comparison or even did a review on the david eden 4x10 with a 800 head but i would like to know the comparison between the genz and the eden if your able to & also the squire bass guitar thanks that genz don't sound bad & the weight is nice really nice lol!

  • @kawi9893 - Eden has a bit more of a signature tone. It's more scooped than Genz.

  • When does this hit stores? I think I just found out what I'm spending a paycheck or two on...

  • @Tooltrocity - They are in stock at the factory, call your local dealer.

  • This Amp is killer. I never seen your camera shacking by an Amp or Bass, inclusive, when you review the GB Shuttle Max 12 with Ub 410 and Ub 212 together. Massive wao

  • Audioslave! wohoo!

  • Ed, your gear reviews are easily the best on youtube.

This seems like a really awesome amp too, I might have to do some saving.

  • love it!,and also my favorite speakers the 12",i rarely use other cabinets than my bergantino 2x12

  • i think it handles upright better than electric actually.

  • I'd love to hear more of the intro slapping sequence! 8-D

  • how much do you get paid for a review?im just asking

  • @greyshark100 - Unless you plan on hiring me, I'd just as soon keep that my business. If you are, we can discuss that privately.

  • @greyshark100 Why would you even ask that? How rude.

  • @greyshark100 It's rude to ask anyone what they get paid for their work.

  • I Like how the camera vibrate when you hit the low B string.

  • @Eric1396 - Earthquake-o-vision!

  • yay ed is back!

  • I just realised the bass is the coolest intrument for me :D

Only took me 20 years of playing guitar.

  • so Ed did genz benz want you to do this demo? or are you back to having the magazine support it? i only wonder for the sake of the frequency of these videos. thanks soooo much for posting this!

  • @henry12350 - This was a work for hire by Genz Benz. Bass Player is not paying me to do video. So sadly, that means the frequency of the videos depends solely on when I get a contract. I do have another client in line for another one within the next week or so.... So, there will be something new coming down the tube soon.

  • @BassGuitarMag thats understandable, im just glad to see you post anything up Ed! thanks so much!!

  • While you were demonstrating the gain, was that the bass line from Cochise by Adioslave you played???

  • @AllanBlack - Yes.

  • @AllanBlack It was! He has mentioned Tim Commerford in his J-Bass review.

  • As always, an excellent review from THE AUTHORITY on bass gear. Man, I'll bet it takes a lot of time and effort to do a great review like this. The folks at GB were smart to sign you up for this! Thanks again for all the behind-the-scenes work on stuff like this. Bassists out there appreciate you, man!

  • Thanks Ed. this made my day. Your reviews are absolutely astounding.

  • Great review Ed! That Ken Smith sounds amazing! Are we going to see a review of it in the near future?

  • @lasteffect - No, I don't demo my own stuff, but I'll use when I can.

  • @BassGuitarMag

    why not?

  • @greyshark100 Because it takes a ridiculous amount of work to make these videos.

  • @greyshark100 - It takes me 3 full days between shooting and editing to do a video. So I reserve that activity for paying clients, too much time to do just for fun.

  • @BassGuitarMag Okay. I understand. And using it more often is cool with me. That bass and you Fender Jazz sound sooo awesome!

  • i was missing your withs ed

  • it was bassy that the camera's focus when crazy everytime he hit the low D lol

  • Hey Ed, i don't know if you just review newly released gear but i would love to see a review from any Acoustic amp. I myself have an Acoustic B100 amp and i think it's pretty decent, but i am not as experienced as you are and i'd be interested in hearing your opinion on it or some of it's higher end brothers.

    Cheers and keep rocking!

  • @Yenasty5 - I only demo gear I get paid to demo. If Acoustic approaches me, I might do it, but that seems unlikely.

  • @BassGuitarMag There's nothing wrong with that. You gotta put food on the table brother. And hey, why not do something you're good at? :)

  • Hey, Ed,

This review is great, I must say you really got me into looking at Genz Benz amps, thanks very much. Erm, that jazz bass with the 5 strings lol...what brand is it? :)

  • @PowermadNavigator seems like Lull bass

  • @CorpusIrae

I think the inscription on the headstock is too long for Mike Lull....the jazz 5-string ;p

  • @PowermadNavigator - It's a Mike Lull MV5 - awesome bass!

  • Great demo as always Ed, thanks :)

  • Excellent review, as asual !

  • yeah !!!!

  • Ed,

I'm always interested in amps that allow to swith from electric to upright bass. Unfortunately most of the input stages seem to "castrate" the sound of the piezo pickups, with Phil Jones amps being the only exception I have had my hands on so far. How do the Genz Benz amps handle that issue? It's too hard to really judge a sound sample via youtube ...

Thanks a lot for your work, it's really fun and information for me.

  • @klabrx - See my upright bass edition of the demo. It works great. I've used the 6.0 as my upright amp for 4 years.

  • what bass is that at 4:00?! It sounds awesome as well!

  • @weekiatconqueror - At 4:00 I'm playing a Smith 6 string.
