ordered the power steering reservoir for a 2003 dodge grand caravan, cost 35.00 with shipping . it was groaning ,made a lot of noise, sounded terrible . removed two screws on the top ,after i removed two hoses. bigger hose was very hard to get off had to work for a while finally slide off with wd40 and a screw driver to pry one side a bit . next the bottom screw was a 10mm needed a long socket the old reservoir will lift out. bled the air out with cap off, drove van ,great results nosie gone
@TheBell1423 For $35 it might be worth just buying the reservoir over trying to clean it. When I looked for my 2006 they were more money.... but maybe they came down or some aftermarket company is making them. Thanks for the info.
Just used your video to replace my resevoir. Very easy to do. But that little screw on the back side is definitely a bugger. Took an hour and saved hundreds. Time very well spent. Thanks for posting a detailed, step by step video!
I cleaned my reservor with hot water and Purple Power cleaner. After getting it as clean as possible(a lot of debris came out), I rinsed with isopropyl alcohol to displace the water, and let it dry out over night.
Thanks for the video. instructions were right on. the nuts were 8mm (top) and 10mm (bottom) for a 2003 Caravan SE. I couldn't get the part new because it wasn't available at the dealer and I couldn't wait. However, I followed the carburator cleaner advice and it worked perfectlly. The bottom nut was tough. So, be patience with it.
Thanks for video. All in all a fairly easy job. Just did it a few minutes ago. Time will tell if the pump is really the weakest link, though. Still making noise. My big/return hose had pretty much fused with the reservoir's connection. That was really a pain. But since I was replacing the reservoir with a new one, I just crushed the plastic part by squeezing with some pliers. My bottom nut was 10mm. After replacing I powerwashed engine bay.
ty so much for posting. Im having the same problem with mine...only make a loud noise once in a while...not constant. Im going to forward this video to my husband.. Will let you know how we make out :)
@KParkerFlores crap I forgot to get back to this. Well, I sent my husband this video and we both had our doubts. I mean, how could such little dirt in the filter cause so much noise....But it worked like a charm and havent had a problem since. Even my husband was surprised. Thanks for posting :)
Thank you for posting this video! I used a turkey baster from the dollar store to remove fluid from the reservoir. A new part would have cost $45 dollars (in Canada). So instead I used a old tooth brush to clean the screen inside. I cut it so the brush would have a 45 degree bend. I reinforced the cut mark with duc tape. Used paint thinner to clean in combination with scrubbing the screen with the brush where you cannot see it through the opening. Thanks again.
you wouldn't happen to know where the rear blower motor resistor is would you? I am getting little air for the back of my 02 caravan and only works when rear climate dial on the front panel is set to medium (low, medium, high). Plus, I also have a very loud steering so this is video will definitely help. Thank you very much, much appreciation for people with your skills willing to teach. Thank you,
Thank you, Banshee8989, this was a GREAT contribution. I was ready to replace the power steering pump on my 2003 but replaced the reservoir instead. Simple and fast.
Mine had 8mm bolts on top, 10mm on the bottom. I loosened the bottom bolt with an extension bar and a rachet. Note: you just have to loosen the nut and you then can lift out the reservoir. If you look at the new one, you'll see the the bolt fits into a slot on the reservoir; loosen it and lift.
Can you help me? I am trying to replace the same part, but the trouble I'm having is that I don't have an extension to get to the one bolt on the bottom. I cannot reach it and don't really know what to do. Since you have taken this off before, I was wondering if you have any tips on how to get to it.
DO IT NOW BEFORE IT COSTS YOU THE PUMP!...Power Steering moves much easier... now flow is great through reservoir. Engine has less strain on acceleration. I think letting the problem go as a low whine for over a year cost me the pump. I still have the same loud whine that developed a few days ago. Wish I came across this years ago instead of assuming the pump was bad and addressing it when it became an issue. Water pump was changed last year so the whine should not be coming from there.
Banshee - thank you for your video. I still don't believe this has solved my problem until I drive the van on the expressway for an extended period of time since that is when I really noticed the sound. I did follow your steps and was able to clean my reservoir without too much trouble. I did have to cut about an inch from the vacuum hose though since it was so attached. As of now it sounds great though and I could not have done it without your video. Thanks again!
banshee, your video's GREAT! Seeing you change the reservoir I figured that it would be a piece of cake. My 07 T&C was making the loud whine for some time now (really bad after 30-45 minutes of high speed freeway driving). Found your video from a Google search last nite & got the parts today (new reservoir from local dealer for just over $22). Took 34 minutes from start to pumping new fluid. Hardest part was getting large hose off. Can see fluid moving in reservoir now & quiet! You are awesome!
Wow Thanks! I just fixed my 2003 caravan (125 000 Km) by cleaning the reservoir. Start by removing the resevoir. I then used almost a whole bottle of carb cleaner, so I knew it was good and clean. Remember that it takes a few minutes for carb cleaner to evaporate. After which you simply reinstall. It took me about an hour or so. That included removing, cleaning and replacing the resevoir. All together the supplies cost under $20. The van sounds like new again.
I just finished this repair on my 2001 T&C. I replaced the power steering reservoir with a new OEM reservoir from a dealer, which cost $30.
FYI: the top bolt heads on mine were 8mm and the lower one was 10mm.
I used ATF-4 as suggestion by this video and several other internet sources.
The repair took me about an hour.
After I was finished, the whining was gone and, with the van parked, I could turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and left with one finger.
@mikeadiddle No problem ;) After seeing the demand for this video I am thinking of making another one for changing the water pump. A common problem and one that scares people but it really is not that hard. stay tunned.
Thanks Banshee......did my '07 with 60,000 miles ...... had a whine during longer trips (45-1hr. hwy driving)
A few tips for others......I bought a new reservoir from the dealership for $27, top bolts were 8mm, if you stand off the the driver's side and have a light to view the bottom side nut...it's pretty easy to get to. The bottom hose was tough to get off, but I used a vice-grips (not too tight, gently rocking it) on the hose to free it up and it came right off.
I drove the car to a parking lot and made some slow sharp turns and put more fluid in and that helped..after driving the car some the noise is completely gone so thats a result!....I know my post is a bit winded but maybe it will help some else...cheers....Wayne
.I left the bottle on the hose and ran clean fluid through while running the engine and filling the reservoir at the same time to help clean out the lines...ok everything is back together but the pump noise is still bad, I cranked the wheel back and forth 15 times still bad ..
brake cleaner does not work and I had better luck with the suggested carb cleaner but you still need to scrape the screen to clean it . I finally found a round detail brush that fit in the hole at the top and rotated the brush and part way filled up the tank with cleaner while twisting the brush over the screen . finally success the screen was pretty clean..
t,this caused problems when iwas done as I got a check engine light and a P1494 code . I reset the obd code with my handheld scanner but I would think this would go out by itself once the air is purged by just driving the car....now cleaning the tank was a bit hard to do , you cant open the tank to get at the screen which in my case was completely blocked with crud .
the bolts on my2001 gr caravan were 10 mm and the hard to get nut was 10mm as well .you dont have to remove the back nut just loosen it as the tank is slotted, you just pull up on than to get it out.I get of I had to "Break" the connection by using a pair of pliers were the hose fits over the plastic tube and twist it carefully to get it to release...I also pulled off the 2 small vacuum lines on top of the manifold,
A service bullitin from the factory shows the use of ATF +4 for this and several other model years. This was spot on. My socket sizes were 8 mm top and 10 mm for the hard to reach one in back. Also I would note, when doing the turning after refill, stop the motor on occasion, let small air bubbles dissipate, do it several times. It takes a little while for the air to all dissipate from the fluid, but does eventually clear. I also had to slightly overfill it, due to cavitation. THANKS MAN!!
Awesome, it worked just like the video said. $32 for the resevoir. 5$ for fluid, $9 for the six pack. Thanks a ton for making this video. It was dead nuts.
Thanks very much for posting this video - I took care of mine today and it worked great! Ever change the transmission fluid/filter on these vans? A video how-to would be great!
Thanks. Always nice to watch someone else do it first.
For my 2004, 3.3L Caravan the two top bolts were 8mm (5/16") and the difficult one on the underside was a 10mm socket approaching straight from the back with a extension. Really the hard of the bottom nut is simply getting an eye on it.
I had the same issue, 2006 Dodge G Caravan, 3.3 V6. After long trips, terrible whining noise when pulling off freeway. This fix worked great. It is now like I put on earplugs when driving the van, So quiet now.
It only cost me a bottle of ATF+4 and bottle of cleaner I used. My hoses were fine after breaking loose.
Mine was 2 - 8mm bolts on top and 10mm nut under back side.
Hopefully the power steering pump isn't damaged too bad after being starved for a few years.
Just finished writing an email to Mr Banshee letting him know I made the fix today per this great video and it worked like a charm. Done! Wish someone would publish an entire manual on DVD with fixes like this for common trouble areas. This guy and others like him are gold. Thank you, Mr. Banshee!
Thank you for this. Really - what a selfless thing you've done to save hundreds, maybe thousands of DIY'ers zillions of dollars.
