This song is very old, pre-dating the digital and internet age. This song has a rich history of being "covered" by others. I'm sure whoever wrote this song (probably dead by now) will be proud to see his creation used in so many unique innovative ways. And get a secong life in the internet and digital age. This shows the true power of the internet. Preserving old stuff and giving them a new lease on life for new generations to discover.
@darkangel2347 I'm with you. Just to note that the tune itself is a very old Folk tune honed by the sensibilities and taste of generations of uncounted number of musicians - adding here and there and pruning off unnecessary. So there probably was never a single person that has written the piece - it is an excellent example of creativity of common culture from the times without propriety lawyers ;)
These lyrics were written in 1930's - but as said, the melody is much much older.
This song holds great personal meaning to me. The Loituma version that is. But this version is AMAZING!!! Lifted my mood greatly. Such cheerful music, and all that clowning around... Why can't life be good like that anymore?
@Zingo33 You are right. Slavic languages belong to the Indo-European language family. Finnish and Sami-languages ("Lapp equals Sami, but their own word Sami is preferred) are related, they are not Ugric though, but belong to the other branch of the Fenno-Ugric languages (together with Estonian and various small languages in Russia). Ugric branch consists of Hungarian and some related smaller languages.
Polka as music style originates in Poland, but this is definitely a Finnish song. The lyrics are very heavy Savonian Finnish dialect, and the original is a folk song from Savitaipale, Finland.
@Hagen823 Actually Polka originated in the area of current Czech republic (Bohemia). The name doesn't refer to Poland but to "pulka" meaning "short step" that was characteristic for the original dance.
My family took a boat along these Finnish lakes back in 1958 or so and this is just what a little village along the lakes looks like. There is a pier and some rustic (but study!) cabins and the pier is full of blond folks when the boat comes and the lake is full of logs!
@Anthraxsgaming OK - didn't know about that, I guess I never heard Polish polka. But as I said (according to the Wikipedia) it was earlier very popular throughout Europe, and has remained so every here and there - so why not also in Poland. However, I myself would nowadays first connect Polka with Germany - Bavaria to be exact.
@Anthraxsgaming Indeed so it seems - but why? AFAIK there is nothing specially Polish in Polka music - except the three first letters. The music has its origins in Bohemia, an area that is today a part of Czech Republic - it eventually became quite popular in all of Europe.
@EneriGiilaan Polka means 'Polish' (lady) in many slavic languages: In Russian it's Pol'ka or Poljka, when transltterated to Latin letters. Could be the Czechs called it 'Polish music' when it was invented.
@timomastosalo Hi thanks. That is a good point - would you think that this connection (Polka - Polish woman) could carry even over to Atlantic? Maybe at least possible because of the massive immigration from the East Europe during the first part of 1900's.
What I read (probably from the WikiPedia) is that the original name comes from 'pulka' or 'little half' from a short step that was part of the original Bohemian dance for this tune.
@EneriGiilaan If that's in wikipedia, we rely then more on that.
Polish IS of course somewhat different, though the same source with russian is easy to deduct, if you know one slavic language. In Russian polu- etc. is 'half', pol' (polj-) is 'polish' or 'field - that's where the name for Poland and Polish people comes - pole (poo-lje) - field in Russian & something very similar in Polish.
In America the music was introduced pretty recently, the name is taken straight from the immigrants.
@kouluampuja96 Ahahaha =D it doesn't mean anything, it's like "lalaalalaalalalala" , except for: "tippuu hilijallee" which of course means "falling slowly".
@kouluampuja96 you can't translate this specific phrase. it's gibberish, not finnish. the rest of the song is indeed finnish, but some of the words and expressions were used in the past. this is all i know, from as far as i've searched for the song and read about it. i'm not finnish myself, i'm just studing finnish. maybe a native finnish speaker could help you more with it.
Haha this is really funny. My history teacher is finnish an showed us this haha my parents are Finnish too and I see their sort of humour. Haha many laughs from New Zealand =)
@urilcamm Nope. It is a very old folk tune - so there probably never existed one variation that you could call the 'original'. If it ever had lyrics they were lost and these ones were written in the 1930's (by Eino Kettunen?) - when it also got it's first recording. This movie is from 1950's.
I don't speak Finnish at all, nor do I understand it, but I am sure that I know what he is singing about! And disregard what other write, you know it too, that he sings that he's a lumberjack and he's ok!
@henrijuhani Hmmmm ... technically we were part of the same 'empire' not the same 'nation' - there is a difference. Or in a sense Finland was not part of the empire either - more accurately the Emperor (Tsar or Czar) of the Russian Empire was at the same time the Grand Duke of Finland, Finland had it's own parliament, own laws, own currency etc.
The correct name of the film is "On lautalla pienoinen kahvila", the director is Thure Bahne and the completion year 1952, produced by Suomen Filmiteollisuus.
@arniruna This folk tune itself is very old - and if it ever had lyrics they were lost. Then in the 1930's someone (forgot the name sorry) wrote these lyrics for it, it got it's first recording etc. Since that there has been several new arrangements and recordings including this movie version from 1950's.
Apparently, two people (at the moment/so far/as of now) do not appreciate the classics as well as the current versions like Vocaloid's version of Ievan Polkka.
The faces remind me of my uncle and his cronies up at the fishing camp when i was a boy. All the old boys sitting around the stove laughing, joking and drinking away the evening.
@MrHenneri : On lautalla pienoinen kahvila means literally "There's a small cafeteria on a raft". The cafeteria (or canteen) was obviously floating along as the lumberjacks were floating the logs down the river. The long sticks were used to guide the logs and free them when stuck to shore or rocks. Savotan Sanni was the cafeteria keeper.

sociopathicpplkillr 1 month ago
@sociopathicpplkillr 'kamm' came probably from 'kammarissa' (in the chamber/bedroom) (comb, combs would be 'kampa, kammat')
'perse' I didn't notice, if it wasn't 'noaPuRiSsa' (in the neighbour (house))
(and I'm a Finn, so I'd recognise the word perse)

Очень похожа на "Волга-Волга". Ну а так даже очень хорошо. Хорошо бы полный оригинал фильма найти. Если кто знает, киньте ссылку.
