I've seen this in classrooms before, the teacher is not organized or prepared and the class quickly becomes out of control. I've also seen teachers who are always prepared, thier days seem to be less hectic and more peaceful.
The children were willing to see what you were going to do with them... They gave you about five seconds to do so before they started amusing themselves
If you're the teacher on the first day of school, prepare for it by:
1. Being at the door to welcome them in.
2. Making a seating chart and putting their names on the desks.
3. Putting the rules on the wall.
4. Having an assignment (journals, perhaps) to do immediately.
5. Having everything carefully scripted.
6. Call the roll while they're doing the assignment. DO NOT have them answer "yes sir" or "no sir."
