@acelancer financial risk, the first one had a 70$ million budget back in 99. That's a huge budget even today - as the industry changed (xbox + fps gaming shooting towards mainstream level media) the demographic of people playing this style (slow, calm, exploration-adventure) is too small compared to the ones buying/playing CoD, GoW, Halo. Therefore it's not smart for SEGA to invest in something that's just to please long time fans.
When shenmue 3 comes out(it will,destiny), it will be the most historic moment in the game industry.i can see it:after 10 years wondering(that eldery famous voice of trailers) thus the saga ends.

I've been playing videogames for the past 28 years or so and I have to say I've never played a game more stunning, beautiful or captivating as Shenmue. Even after all these years I still whack out the Dreamcast and play Shenmue 1 & 2 from scratch. It's a shame that Sega scrapped the series, the music is just beautiful.
One of the true masterpieces of videogaming, forget your Halo, Call Of Duty etc ~ this game is a life changing moment :)
On a side note.. I purchased the game when it was first released, and marketing could have been WAY better than it was. I only heard about this treasure because I'm an RPG connoisseur.

I was awe struck when I found out that the lead director for Shenmue left SEGA. This game was, and still is everything I look for in a solid title. To this day I compare RPG games to it... only to come shy of the immersion this game gave me, and took from me.

The first two Shenmue games were almost suicide missions for Sega. The first Shenmue took $60 million to make, meaning that every Dreamcast owner in the world would have to buy the game twice for Sega to make a profit.
The second one, due to bad decisions from Sega, also did poorly.
Sega lost a lot of money from these previous investments, so they don't believe they should risk more money by releasing Shenmue 3.
What great nostalgia this music brings back. I will never play anything as fulfilling as Shenmue again. The greatest tragedy is all the gamers that were/are well and truly hooked, will never see an end game. :"(

The one thing ill say about the music to this game is you get Yuzo koshiro and Takenobu Mitsuyoshi together and you get these epic tracks to a legendary game long live SHENMUE
I'm downloading a Dreamcast emulator right now just so I can play these games again. I have waited more than five years to replay both of them (I have the European DC version of 2 which contains english subtitles) and I really can't wait anymore.
If you're wondering why I waited so long, it's mostly because I played them so much I had everything completely known by heart and I just haven't been able to forget any of it yet. This game is that memorable. I want to experience it all over again.
music score & atmosphere was near phenomenal in Shenmue. I loved the tune & overall atmosphere when you uncover the basement and go down there for the first time.
This was the only game I played when I was little that was SO REAL and SO good. People talk about Final Fantasy and all these, but why not Shenmue? This game was totally the best and I am happy to see a fan base out there that still wants this game.

I'm replaying this game right now and Shenmue II later as well, with a guide beside me. It's been more than 5 years I have touched the game. Now I'm going to max out my fighting skills and get those secrets in the game!

I agree with you completely... Epic storylines are a thing of the past in gaming now, i'm only 17, but video games make me feel ancient... I really can't stand the games coming out these days.

In my opinion, while graphics have been improving, imagination has been decreasing.
People have completely lost all imagination on gaming, because they are too fusses on how realistic things can get.
So that people want to make things look real, they want all things that happen in their games to be realistic, therefore al imagination is gone.
truely sadening.
I created games and applications, and without a doubt any game I make, will be like these older games.

The one thing ill say about the music to this game is you get Yuzo koshiro and Takenobu Mitsuyoshi together and you get these epic tracks to a legendary game long live SHENMUE

I'm downloading a Dreamcast emulator right now just so I can play these games again. I have waited more than five years to replay both of them (I have the European DC version of 2 which contains english subtitles) and I really can't wait anymore.
If you're wondering why I waited so long, it's mostly because I played them so much I had everything completely known by heart and I just haven't been able to forget any of it yet. This game is that memorable. I want to experience it all over again.

music score & atmosphere was near phenomenal in Shenmue. I loved the tune & overall atmosphere when you uncover the basement and go down there for the first time.

SEGA really needs to create a conclusion to the series by producing a third title to the series.
I know the game didn't sell well in America, but at least produce a jap. versoin so we could just play it.

This was the only game I played when I was little that was SO REAL and SO good. People talk about Final Fantasy and all these, but why not Shenmue? This game was totally the best and I am happy to see a fan base out there that still wants this game.

..Shenmue...oh I remember those times when my brother played this captivating and beautiful game, I loved sitting infront of the television and being totally enchanted by the story, the characters, the invorement... Such great memories. I really want to pick it up and play it again!

But theres this one song that I really loved, wich I cannot figure out how its called! Its the Song thats on the cassette that that Reggae Guy next to his truck gives to you! sorry guys but from what i've heard the creator of shenmue has left sega thus the series will not be finished with the final game, even though the entire story is already written out. sucks i know. i couldn't put that game down when i first got it for dreamcast.
