The relication of dna through reproduction is open to damage because it has to be open to change. These small "changes" over tens of thoudands of years create new species. The polar bear decended from the brown bear. Living in the Artic favoured the lighter coloured bears giving them better camoflage and therefore making them better hunters. These bears reproduced more therefore the bears became white and effectively a new species.

Darwin is the true prophet. Natural selection is what it is all about. The Origin of Species (1859) really smashed my concept of the bible mainly Genesis. I realized that the Greek and Roman gods were myths and the bible was also based on myths. Keep up the great Videos!

it's just that epigenetics is irrelevant to your point, which i see as:

1) everything is run by forces that have no meaning, & are not directed by intelligence.

2) if there's no meaning, there's nothing that justifies suffering.

from my point of view, it doesn't matter if the system is complex or simple, or competitive or cooperative, it still is directed by forces, not by intelligence.

epigenetics is interesting for other reasons, non-philosophical reasons. but it's still another dumb force.

Don't you see that by stubbornly sticking to exactly what Darwin said that you're actually going against his principles? Darwin attempted to explain a world that could begin with lifeless oceans and reach us. Perhaps you should allow your viewpoints to evolve as well. Darwin built the foundation for the entire concept of evolution, and he's a hero for it. That doesn't mean however that his explanation was the be all and end all. As long as we exist, we *build* upon what we know.

Well said. Don't forget about sexual selection which is just as important in Darwin's theories. You can be a master at surviving but if you can't attract a mate then your DNA is wedded out.

Your view here presents a problem for your VR world. If natural selection is our world view reflected in our view of nature -- you must admit our competitive economics is like that -- then unless your VR world is a business venture it will not stand a chance. People that think epigenetics somehow cancels out or replaces Darwinian evolution through the process of natural selection are as uneducated about the topic (both evolution AND epigenetics) as creationists are. They are using the reverse scientific method by creating a conclusion and then supporting the conclusion with pieces of evidence they can find for it...instead of looking at all evidence and concluding based on it.

again: saying there is a paradigm shift should not be taken as an attack on a scientist. To build on a scientists work by bringing it to a new paradigm is an honor. Priests don't like that sort of thing, scientists DO.

Imagine if people claimed Einstein was disrespectful to Newton to create General Relativity... oh wait, some did, but weren't they silly? Isn't it obvious that that is not what Einstein was doing, and that Newtonian dynamics is still accurate to a reasonable approximation.

the theory seems to INCREASE the idea that we adapt to environments, that sometimes the affect can be quicker than the really slow, long term, adaptation we have from genetics alone.

It touches adaptation, for the better, it gives another means of environment to affect form.

having said that I should add, I am not following epigenetics and I don't know it's scientific standing at the moment. HOWEVER, I do know that Matt is claiming the mice study lead to beneficial attributes. Also, Darwin did not know about genes, so how does it affect him if natural selection still works but generating animals includes something beyond genes?

you are misunderstanding the meaning of a new paradigm. Einstein gave us a new paradigm beyond what Newton's laws give... and we still respect Newton and USE his laws still. It's not a rejection of the old dogmatic kind where when one piece falls the whole thing is discredited. NO, the old theory becomes an approximation.
