Interesting comments about Tabs. I have played for about 40 years. Tabs can be helpful, but the I doubt whether the greats in all genres (Hendrix, BB King etc) have ever seen a tab in their life ! As Clapton once said ' learn where every sound is on the fretboard and feel the way there'.
dang dame I'm strangely entertained by your skill(I'm normally strictly stuck to the day of old) and just thrilled that you got so good with nothing but practice and will...once you get your heart broken, or lose someone close, its gonna get lyrical though (but it's good release)and the more tribulation you experience the more it will show but don't get down.. unless it's on that guit-box baby cuz you can really jam -understand?- SMOOTH-AS-EGGS! chicken-head
So, do you have any tips on how to play good? Do you practice lots? Just come easy? Both? Do you learn by ear or tab or both/ depends? You're incredible. Such a natural. Makes me cry knowing I'll never be that good and I've been playing for more than 15 years :-)
@ Hoopermazing. Hmm. Some tabs are produced by amazing transcibers who can put things on paper I just can't hear and play, especially for blues. While I assume you're saying it all should be done by ear, are classical musicians idiots for using notation?
@TheFunkify - You assumed in error. Playing by ear has its place, but I was alluding to standard musical notation. Tabs are for musical illiterates (and/or people who don't know their way around the fretboard) as far as I'm concerned. Tabs tie you to a particular position, and they usually don't include rhythmic or articulation info. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Notation conveys much more information... and enables you musicians. Ask the leader of a jazz ensemble for tabs... ROFL
@ Hoopermazing. Tabs can too have rhythm and articulation info. Have a look at a guitar mag. Professionally made tabs can also let you know where an artist played something, another advantage to sound authentic. Jazzers use the Real book- chord charts with a very basic melody and go from there. Nowhere near as much detail as a track tabbed in a magazine. I use both, but ear is key. Be well.
@TheFunkify not exactly true it mostly comes by making music that you love mostly from the heart so its not all on paper if it is they only want to approve it with words or with more interments so its not always on paper
Alicia, this is TERRIFYINGLY good! WHOA!!!!! sorry, i wish i could express my appreciation of your playing better than that Alicia, but i simply don't have the words! you have GOT IT, my friend! :-)
Hah. i've been there or thereabouts davie, just not playing much. not happy enough with anything i recorded in chicago in june either for posting purposes.... guess i'm officially on a break - hoping it will do me good and i come back fresh soon!
