I never saw the musical. but read the book and saw several versions of the movies over the years. Very moving song, so greatly aligned with the plot of this story.
If you want to know more about this musical there is a group on Facebook called "Jane Eyre: The Musical by Paul Gordon." It has links to videos, purchasing information and pictures. I hope that helps!
Absolutely brilliant idea of putting free samplers of Broadway musicals on for promotional purpose! Didn't know such a show existed. Thanks so much for posting.
I really like the music, but I don't think that focusing on the romance in Jane Eyre is a correct representation of the novel. I love the songs though.
Does anyone else notice how much trouble she has with going flat? She does it a lot more on the cast recording than here...but it is rather bothersome in some spots. She's a fantastic performer, but the pitch problems are a distraction.
You're right. I dunno, the accent she uses ticks me off too much. She's using a much too posh one for Jane Eyre. Why couldn't they get a British actress?
love it!!! the orchestra was a bit off, but marla and james were amazing!! and in my mind james can do no wrong:) i wish i had been able to see this when it was still on broadway - here's hoping there's a revival soon!
I was a bit skeptical at first because Marla's much older than Jane is supposed to be, but holy moly, her voice is AMAZING and I cannot imagine an ingenue being able to pull off such passion and emotion. So yay, Marla!
I was also skeptical when I first started listening to this CD and realized that 18-year-old Jane was being played by an "older" actress with an alto belt voice.
But I was won over pretty quickly! A light pretty voice would fit the character but this type of voice (and acting) conveys inner strength and gives us the character much better than it would have if they cast some teenage ingenue with a light breathy voice.
She's absolutely gorgeous and he...what a spunk! :), great diction

Ugh. I wish someone could post the whole musical with James Barbour in it. He has an awesome voice and I love this story.

I like this version, but...I'm glad they rewrote the lyrics and some notes. The ones now are better.

True, but it makes a better musical plot than the novel overall - there's a lot of stuff in the novel that wouldn't help move a show along onstage.

I always felt the story was a love story at it's core. Especially if it's going to be musicalized, romances make for better musicals.

You've gotta love how the firetruck siren is in the key Marla has to sing when she comes in...haha...nice...

I am surprised they did this song and not Sirens since James doesn't sing nearly as much as she does. But oh well!! :)

Marla and James are fantastic! The music isn't doing the song proper justice but it's amazing to actually see them preforming it.

So, looks/age are less important for once!
