That is the sort of lame comment made usually by people who don't really master foreign languages themselves, let alone sing them in stratospheric and phonetically impossible spheres like La Stupenda had to do and mostly did very well. I speak all four languages of opera and I always understand what she sings... And about German, even Schwarzkopf said the best German singers never bothered to enunciate in high tessituras and coloratura bits...
poor Sutherland, she was all chin and never never pronounced one word of what she was singing, you never knew if she was singing in French, English , Italian or German (did you ever try german ? )
per quest opera sarebbe l ideale la grande voce di renata tebaldi...io gia la sento nelle mie orekkie....lei ke col suo fraseggio incanta...nulla togliendo alla sutherland...ma il verismo lasciamolo alla grande tebaldi!

Dear Sutherlandfan,
Thank you for the music, but more especially for the excellent pictures, many I have not seen before!
Joan is such a modest nice person,it's such a shame that she appears to be so frail now.
We must be SO grateful to Dickie for what he saw in Joan's voice, and that he persuaded her to trust him.

By the way, what's the role Sutherland was performing in the photo which shows in 2:00?

Jenifer in Tippet's Midsummer Marriage, in Covent Garden, conducted by John Pritchard

Are those pictures of Sutherland dressed as a nun her Suor Angelica on stage? Or maybe is it another performance as Madame Lidoine?
Homoclassicus 3 years ago
Yes both pictures are of her as Madame Lidoine, one from the early stage performance and the other from the later production in her career.
