.308 is an excellent and popular hunting round and .223 is very popular for varmit control... It's seriously stupid to go after guns based on calibre.

.308 is 7.62mm nato rnd used in ak47 all variants, fn-fal, g36c, sks, all co-axial machine guns oon the cheiftan/abrams,bradley, m113 and many others, secondly the m16 all versions and squad assault rifle fire .223 so its seriously smart to buy by caliber because these kinds of ammo will be available same with .45 caliber 9mm (army/navy/marines) .38 .40 .10 (police) these pistol rounds will alays be available. now .223 is just fine for deer and down to varmints

Around here they won't let you hunt deer with the .223 it's below the minimum calibre, and a lot of counties in NY are shotgun only.

What's also nice about the .308 is it's performance is close to the 30-06 without the excessive slap to the shoulder, that and the stock of an M14 (first .308 I ever encountered) just fits me like it was custom made.
