Since Gabriel acknowledges the song's about jealousy, I think the eerie tribal make up and divination ritual he's doing(with the seeds or stones in the circle) is linked to that. The primitive jealous urge to foretell your future with the beloved., or as a method of trying to control the outcome.

That doesn't really explain why it's so creepy, though.!

Ever since I heard this... oh, many years ago now I suppose... I have loved this track. I was interested to read some of the earlier comments but to be honest, I've never given the words too much thought as its always been the music that has spoken to me. It remains, to this day to be, one of those tracks that is sublime!

Peter Gabriel has always been.....artistic. His abstract symbolism is often a bit to deap for me to understand, but I still enjoy the music, even if it leaves me confused, lol. His videos follow the abstact theme of his music well.

Peter Gabriel is amazing. This song is exactly about what he said 'jealousy' just listen close and read the symbolism. The meaning- yes the monkey is really the inner part of you and I that if shocked it appears and becomes alive. The symbolism is that jealousy shocked his inner monkey. He is saying cover me, I dont want to face it, you threw your pearls before the swine. You shocked my monkey.

I think the plot of Project X has little to do with this song and video. Project X had a very literal plot and this some is allegorical.

The monkey in the song is you and I. When the song starts he is calm & cool in the corperate office setting then as the song gets more eratic he regresses into a primative self. Least thats what I thought it ment.
