WOW! Essra never ceases to surprise me. This is so beautiful and well produced. Makes me want to see what Lisa did with it. What year was this recorded?
Me too... Essra's demo was from 1988-ish and the song was a hit for Lisa Fischer in 1991, I believe. Pretty soulful for a former Jewish, white girl from Philadelphia, right?
Thanks for posting this, fecinny. Lisa's still blows me away in that big fashion but Essra's has an intimacy to it that is v. appealing. The way her chorus differs is also interesting. Always like to hear how songwriters interpret their own songs... so thanks for this!
I first want to thank you for posting Essra's version. I stumbled upon it when searching for the more popular version of Lisa's. I seem to like Essra's much better and have been listening to it non stop for a couple of days now.
Unfortunately, I am yet to find a source to purchase an MP3 version of her track. May I inquire as to whether there are any recommended sources I could get one? Thanks!
Thanks for sharing that Frank! I don't believe that I've heard this before, and I've got nearly all (if not all) of her recorded output. Haven't heard of Lisa Fisher though, but have quite a few albums with Narada playing on them; very talented man, and a good choice for Lisa to have picked to do justice to Essra's (and Randy's) song :-)
It's nice to hear this, but imo Lisa totally owns this song in comparison. Although the two women have very different styles, so a direct comparison perhaps isn't fair. For me the bridge in Lisa's version makes the song, whereas here it's sort of the weakest part.
Wow!! This is fascinating, because I've always absolutely loved Lisa Fischer's version! I had no idea this demo existed! I love this version too, especially the choruses. Awesome! :-)
Essra's like the gift that keeps on giving!

Know why I like Essra Mohawk? Cuz she laid the bomb vocals for the theme song for Teeny Little Super Guy!

Thanks for commenting & we can both appreciate how it all begins with a "song."
Also, I believe Essra said it was Narada who put the bridge in Lisa's version, btw.

I'd love to hear more about this demo: date, producer, studio, etc., if possible... anything like that.
