  • 1:40 - there we go.

  • Jaco's covered in mud! The mania must have been bad.

  • 2:17. Who the fuck is that in the purple and why is he/she/it playing with Jaco? Also, why can't we hear it at all?

  • OMG that intro sucked..

  • Is that a second bassist?

  • and here you all are slagging off videos on the internet, while these guys have lived the life and performed for a living.

  • 0:25 major trumpet fail. im a freshman in high school and i can get that right.

  • @slowgold20 you mean 1:25 ...

  • The bald trumpet player cracks me up

  • Jaco was a genius, but like Thelonious Monk was manic depressive, so it was crazy, but it was still a phenomenon,a master

  • Jaco fue un genio, pero al igual que Thelonius Monk era maníaco depresivo, por eso hacía locuras, pero igual fue un fenómeno

  • terrible intro... lol... jaco is way too high

  • Jaco reached a state of groove so high that he started to turn black...

    Ok, bad joke.

I read he threw his bass to river in Japan, maybe it was before this gig...

  • @aakkoin Ha!

  • Foehammer:Seeing him here covered in mud makes him look like a tribal character & distinguish him visually from Mark Egan ,useful antics ,love it !!!

    Thanks a million once again

  • Foehammer:Thanks so much x sharing this great piece of memorabilia , I'm so happy to see Jaco covered in mud,he was simply unique and a true entertainer he brought fun & humor to a musical genre that falls sometimes into an empty pseudo intellectual status,he was the bad kid,the teatrical rockstar full of dexterity and musicality,he is so much fun to watch & to listen to,that is why he keeps influencing the new generations...

  • it got so chromatic it was hard to tell were in the head they were GENIOUS

  • Tout juste génial .. merci jaco !!!!

yes yes yes yes yes ...

  • man jaco is a rock star, would of been so cool to see what he did, i want this show! played terrific!

  • @godwhyisthistaken I could'nt agree more !!!

  • 20 people still manage to dislike this.

That's more funny than the way Jaco looks here.

  • love doc alzheimer on the keyboard

  • He may be a great bass player, but he looks like an idiot with no shirt and a rag around his head. What is he supposed to be?

  • @abukamoon He was an artist, not a stylist

  • @milotrombin That's right a true artist...

  • @abukamoon seriously mentally ill. That's it.

  • @abukamoon Bi-polar

  • @abukamoon a clown, a genius one..

  • i can watch this video every day of my life

  • Anyone know who the trombonist is?? He is one tight player!

  • 1:28 holy blowin mad high

  • 1:28

  • Jaco was the greatest bass player of all time i think it was1995 that the jazz society voted him as the best bass player ever

  • No folks, it's mud.

  • trumpet player?

  • soo fuckin sloppy...

  • This was quite somethin'. I love jaco. I wonder if the trombonist ever studied the style of fred wesley.

    peace

  • seeing jaco like this makes me sad. he was great, even in the 80s. when he was clean was the best time of jaco's career. RIP john francis anthony 'jaco' pastorius III. i imagine him playing bass for all the people in heaven now

  • jaco o melhor para sempre !!! jaco the best for ever!!!!!!!!!!!

  • jaco hired a bassist to play while he was resting, nice...

  • The soul intro was real sloppy.

  • Yes it is mud om Jaco's body.

Jaco had suffered from a great depression - noone had though about it. They thought it was his image. So he was diagnosred in (i think) 1982. At this time Jaco had gone insane unfortunately.

R.I.P Jaco. Noone will ever be like you. An example noone can live up to.

  • is that mud on jaco's body?

  • That trumbone solo made me want to shove burning matches in my ears. BLEH!

  • Does anyone has the interviews of this concert???

  • Haha look at granny on the piano...

  • @cammy874 That's Gil Evans. He had a long line of gifted musicians wanting to work with him and be involved in his music. Can't say the same for your idol Jaco!

  • Can someone give me the transcription of the trombone solo in 6:50? :D

    I can't find it anywhere, but I like it. :D :D

  • looks like Mark Egan is the other bass player, right?

  • @3feetup yes, he's mark egan.

  • who's the trumpet solist?? that dude is insane!

  • Old guy playing the same note on piano over and over again.

    WIN!

  • @JamesIsMyNamo That's Gil Evans, the famous and legendary arranger-bandleader who collaborated with Miles Davis the 1950s and 1960s.

  • The chicken was composed by Pee Wee Ellis.

  • can anyone tell me who originally composed the song "the chicken"??

  • @yoonhonz that would be Alfred James Ellis

  • A performer of extraterrestrial caliber!

    RIP JACO.

  • Increible, So amazing!!!

    Yaco Pastorius, you'RE IMMORTAL!!!!

  • 5:56 100% baggish.

    ......but awesome

  • Awsome

  • ?????

  • That is a sick note on the trumpet at 1:29 so cool

  • Comment removed

  • did he die of skin cancer?

  • yes

  • I heard that he was actually shot after fighting with a guy in a bar...i dont know for sure

  • @phanchieta nah he got beat to death by a bouncer at a club after trying to break in

  • I play Trumbone for our school Stage Band, and we are the best school jazz band in our region.

We play this, really love this, but no offence but to me this particular performance seemed a little lacked... trumpets were really out of time, no range, and really slow (we play much faster) i donno, this song is much better played fast

  • Ya. i play trombone in my schools jazz band as well. we've won all but 2 competitions for the past 20 years in New England. We play it this speed, much more funky. When you finally understand funk THEN you can talk.

  • dude, it was an opinion.

i just said i think its much better played fast

  • Great ! Jaco Pastorius is the best bass player i ever listened ...

Why they don't have so crasy bass in France ?^^

  • 2:48, haha he got mixed away

  • yea what in the heck was he doing

  • @HammondB200 HAHA i love that moment

  • listen Crazy funky by minicillo

  • why is he covered in shit?

  • you can always tell who the lead trumpets are...

  • @pshhitsvalencia actually if youve ever seen maynard ferguson play he played 4th but had all the disgusting, head splitting notes.

  • i was just trying to say that you can tell who is playing lead in the beginning because of how much air he was putting in his horn.

  • you try and play the trumpet you piece of shite

  • sweetie i do play trumpet.

  • haha the second bass player is ike when the hell do i play?

  • That second bass player is the young Mark Egan, playing his Pedulla Buzz Bass

  • GOod !!! whoa!

  • does anybody knows the story about jaco covered in mud?

  • For the show. ;)

    He is the man. :)

  • It seems he ended up in some sort of depression....there's more to read in this book by Bill Milkowski

  • @kax61 Milkowski's book was a load of rot. focused far too much on the negative aspects of Jaco's carreer

  • @Zaul2410 i read jaco threw his bass to a river

  • @Zaul2410 i think its skin cancer

  • @Zaul2410 i heard he would rub his feces all over himself

  • @parmeseancheese Don't comment on any Jaco videos anymore.

  • @Zaul2410 Apparently went sliding down a muddy hillside after a rain...I believe thats what his bio says. Great book, but a very sad ending for such a brilliant mind.

  • @Zaul2410 I sadly do not know although i do know he put chicken fat on hes fingers to make it so his fingers slide on the strings better

  • @Zaul2410 you could say that he's "on the Jazz"

  • wow this is one of the best versions ive heard

  • Why the second bass player?

  • bass during his solos is the only thing that makes sense to me

  • good luck.

  • I don't know what the fuck's up w/Jaco--all covered in mud. Jaco still makes me smile and cry at the same time. Goaddamn--he was so special, and just such a tragic figure. Is that Mark Egan on the other bass?

  • Cause it's raining. I'm sure he was somewhere off stage having fun rolling in it.

  • Mowgli is the best basist of all time! :))

I listen to this recording for 2 years, almost every day and I cant stop listening. :D

Thanks Jaco for the show!!! :)

  • @faulbaums

Drugs were his major issue. My father knew Jaco really well.

  • This is a weird video. This is punk jazz... No more to say. Who said Jaco was on drugs? I think the whole band is ;-)

  • The drummer is Adam Nussbaum??

  • circular breathing ftw O.O

  • Circular breathing win. Interesting use of circular breathing fail.

  • haha agreed

  • what the hell happened why does he looks like that?

  • he was hittin the drugs pretty hard and was living on the streets. at one point he was litteraly sitting on a street corner playing birdland out a boombox say to people that that was him and that they should give him money. its so depressing.

  • He was also bipolar. Drugs were not his major issue.

  • don't get mad at me for asking, but why is he covered in that stuff?

  • i shat on him

  • No wonder Jaco went downhill henceforth, look at the calibre of player he is performing with here - SHEESH!!

  • gil evans?

  • It's funny how the city looks like its coming out of a joint on that Select neon sign.

  • the drummer is so frustrating. at times he sounds like he's in high school...

  • yeah like at 6:40 when he starts riding. it just sounds like he's been playing drums for a month.

  • poor jaco... damn great music though! i'm sure the audience is confused.

  • why is he so dirty??

  • he's jaco. he probably rolled around in mud, tripping on acid before he played this show.

  • jaco is outstanding as ever, but the soloist just suck so bad, wtf this is not some hard bop, just simple fusion, they're playing like they're in the miles davis 2nd quintet or something lol, too much.

  • I think jaco was the greatest bass player of all time I hope you all agree with me.

  • lol, he thought so too... "I'm John Anthony Pastorius III and I'm the greatest bass player in the world"...

  • @DudeLove1996 definetely

  • esto es una fiesta!!!

  • It is fantastic, with Gil Evans and Adam Nussbaum. Poor Jaco, he looks like an animal, what kind of rebellion it was?

  • All the other trumpet players are doing a shitty job except for that black guy in the green shirt. Listen to all the clams (wrong notes and bad sounds from trumpets) in the beggining!

  • jaco was bipolar ?

  • who is the trumpet player in the green shirt?

  • Lew Soloff is caucasian and could well be the trumpet player in the centre, but nah probably not the soloist if that's who you're talking about.

  • OMG the trombone player is FREAKING CRAZY!!!! :O:O:O

    he is a dayum god!!!

  • he was insane at this time.

  • why is he covered in mud or something

  • he looks so dirty

  • is mark egan the other bass player? i saw him and jaco jammin around 2:15

  • Yes, he is ; )

  • that trumpet player is a beast!

  • so id th e trombone player!

  • Yeah!! I believe thats Lew Soloff (Blood Sweat & Tears) somebody correct me if i'm wrong.

  • om gosh the trumpet player looks so cool but kinda weird when he does his circular breathing solo

  • so, why is he covered in mud?

  • cause he back of death

  • I read somewhere before that he wanted to be black, but I've never heard it confirmed.

  • it was in his biography; one of his friends said that.

this video was most likely taken at the time at which jaco was bipolar. he looks terrible but his playing remains amazing.

  • wow amazing performance, and that is one beasty trumpet player busting out the circular breathing starting at 4:14 and finishing around 4:47

  • why the hell is he dirty

  • hes homeless, isnt he?

  • he dead

  • what happened to the soli section? thats the fun part, but very nice circular breathing in the trumpet solo

  • what is that stuff that he covered himself in?

  • dirt?

  • It´s a kind of oil I think.

  • jazz poo

  • We Just played this in our Schools Jazz tour in Austria. What an awsome song.

  • jaco was crazy lol

  • 2 basses? never seen that :P but niceee

  • Holy Lew Soloff! That's some sick lead playing!!

  • whos the trumpeter taking the solo in this?

  • does anyone know why he would be covered in that stuff?? lol jaco was the man

  • Comment removed

  • this is two years before he died, that's not the bass he ripped the frets out of

  • luvit and dedicate it to all the chickens

  • now thats some circular breathing!

  • lol hes covered in mud and he has like a full orchastra behind him and the people in the audience are sitting down and have collared shirts on

  • Great song!!!!!!!

  • so ahead of his time!

  • personnel from the movie. Gil Evans and his Orchestra:- Lew Soloff, Miles Evans, Hannibal Marvin Peterson, trumpet; George Lewis, trombone; Howard Johnson, tuba; George Adams, Chris Hunter, reeds; Gil Evans, keyboards; Peter Levin, synthesizer ; Hiram Bullock, guitar; Mark Egan, Jaco Pastorius, electric acoustic double bass; Adam Nussbaum, drums.

  • john fadus is in this tho

  • the lead trumpet is Lew Soloff - a great player, any genre.

  • Oh my god- that trumpet player is freaking amazing.

jaco was great, but he was stupid to get mixed up in drugs. its a shame.

  • 2:46 Gil, what the hell do you think you were doing?

  • Having a good time of course.

  • dirty..

  • my man looks like he's covered in mud!

  • I think the trombonist was trying to make his solo sound like a chicken. Did a pretty good job I thought.
