Yeah, what Jonny's doing with his guitar is amazing and all, but what about Phil's drumming? Although it isn't in this video it's amazing he's able to keep in 4/4 time with the syncopated piano and complicated drum rhythm.
you can interpret it in a lot of ways, but listen to the cymbal when the drums kick in and start counting each time it hits. you'll get 4/4. piano & drums emphasised at odd moments give the illusion of it having a weird signature when in fact it's 4/4.
I think yeah in theory you could. I think it's more though that the bow makes Jonny's Starcaster sound a lot like a cello rather than having more sustain about it - however I'm hoping to get an ebow soon for stuff like this, so yeah you're probs right. :)
I'm sure I read somewhere that Jonny trained as a viola player as a child. Anyway he does bow the guitar very very gracefully in this vid. Waiting patient - ly for the album.

i hate people who think that just because artists use a bow on a guitar that they're copying. grow up, please. i've seen it on other vids too.
i love this intro with the bow, it makes it sound so ethereal.
Aether77 3 years ago 9
in theory cant you use the e bow?to create a similar sound?maybe a bit more errie because of the susutain?

i can hear it, its like the ambient "whale" sounds, if thats what you would call it. colin used to do them on his bass from 2001 to 2004.

The first guy to bow the guitar was Eddie Phillips from the '60s Mod band The Creation.
Evidence?

Heh - and not even Jimmy Page was the first! He picked it up from another session musician!
Johnny6666 5 years ago
If you want to get technical about it - Jimmy Page was doing this long ago.
Jabberjaw17 5 years ago
Radiohead and Sigur Ros are the only too bands alowed to do this. They're the only two bands who CAN do this amazingly.
Just make sure you don't think Radiohead invented this. Sigur Ros did.
JohnyJoe 5 years ago
Only too? lol. Jabber is right, Jimmy Page did it first.
