  • can i buy a drive ready to go from you?

  • what about apple tv 2? it has an a4 Chip. if it runs on atv2 it would run on iphone 4 and ipad 1 too.

  • can dis run mac programs?

  • @Tru3Be3st Yes. But it only has 256MB RAM, so it's best for simple programs.

  • @mk500 hey! Can you each me how to install tiger on the atv? Thanks. -Akmal

  • Does the wifi work??

  • Does it work with the new Apple TV (Black)

  • @iCrazinessShow no it doent have enough memory to even have a movie on it you stream everything.

  • so what would be the specks ????

  • you can get the apple tv Ui on mac. its called front row.

  • is a 30 GB external hard drive good for this?

because I just want to boot with the disk

and I use the apple tv HDD as my standard HDD

  • If it only was Windows.

  • Do you think this would work on the new Apple tv model coming out?

  • @KcbFilms those run ios 4.1, so probably not. they're different hardware.

  • I just got mac mini to not have to deal with this stuff! :)

  • does this mean it can run window too?

  • @kahochueng yes, you could possibly put windows on it via bootcamp, but there would be no point unless you already have an unused apple TV. It would be cheaper (and a faster processor and more ram) to get a netbook or even a very cheap laptop and hook it up to your TV.

  • nice!

  • can you use eyetv on normal appletv?

    thanks

    will

  • Nice Video.....

  • how's that possible? It doesn't have RAMs, etc

  • @Modview

It does have 256 MB of ram

  • @xxOle and a 1ghz processor :D

  • a simple usb hub can connect a mouse or keyboard, or have remote buddy built in (limited use with existing hardware)

  • Thought. Create a prebuilt image with the AirMouse Software, use the iPod Touch application, and now boom you have an OSx running Apple Tv thats useful.

  • how do you do stuff (no mouse or keyboard lol)

  • you plug in a mouse and keyboard

  • How do you control it???

  • what's the point? You can't connect a keyboard or a mouse.

  • yes you can you douche bag. usb !

  • yeah, ever heard of a usb hub? faggot.

  • USE EASY BUTTON

  • Great!!!! You r a Genius!!!!

  • where you get the easy thingy!?

  • 0:40 Voice Crack LOLOLOL

  • Wikipedia says that Apple TV already run OS X (Only a stripped down embedded version of OS X though just to run apps for the TV.)

  • Hah! Good point. My title is misleading. I should say "full OS X" or something.

  • just get a mac mini

  • Yes; in general this is sage advice. But it's fun to see what can be done.

  • yeah but this is way cheaper.

  • Uhm... I am currently installing 10.4.9 on a drive that I plan to do this with--

But I just got smacked in the face with a brick wall:

How the FUCK am I going to control this? Rofl

One USB port, dedicated to the OS drive.

I have a USB Keybaord (Logitech G15) with two USB ports.

Would the AppleTV Notice the USB drive through this thing's Built in USB hub?

    I really hope so...

Along with the mouse (I'm sure it'll notice THAT at least) when it finally starts Finder.

    Guess I'll see. =O

  • if you were smart and looked closer, his ide to usb adapter has 2 additional usb ports, probably to act like a hub...

  • Yeah, you need a USB 2 hub. That will allow you to have a HD as well as a keyboard and mouse. Just make sure it is USB 2; or it will be INSANELY slow.

  • Have you seen this work ? Do you know if you could access all your media from a Time Capsule through Apple Tv

  • why would you want to do this...?

  • emilslattery:

    Why not? :)

  • can u use any external hard drive. and where can i find these files. I have an apple tv and it is getting boring. I WANNA HACK!! lol

  • Use that, and go install Windows XP. then install Ubuntu in VirtualBox. THAT WOULD BE EPIC

  • Or just install the much better OS without the use of VirtualBox.

  • Depends what version, Vista Home Basic only requires 256 if I am correct

  • Vista Home Basic requires 512. But, you can modify the winsetup.dll file (I think that's the name) and change the 512 minimum value to 256, I did that when I first ran Vista, I only had 256 on my PC back then, now it's 1280 gb on it, and I need to expand my MacBooks memory. Grah.

  • He has the Staples "That was Easy!"

  • that is awesome!!

  • the mark's geekly ramblings site doesn't work anymore

  • I got hacked. It will return when I have time away from RL to repair it.

  • I wonder...we should install boot camp beta then try installing windows vista on it =D

  • That will really make some Tech Geeks cry :'(

  • Some "tech geeks" need to "get over it"

  • Thanks for the vid! I have a question before I do this.... does the wireless card still work under this method?

  • what do you download to the external hard drive. and does it matter what kind of hard drive.

  • That was easy! :D

  • Yeah, I thought it was fitting :-)

  • can you upload the files on torrent? :P

  • ohh.. the easy button!!

  • Yeah I was trying to figure out how he could do this.. but then I saw the easy button, and knew he must have just hit that easy button to get all of this to work...

(man I got to get one of those easy buttons..LoL)

  • NEAT

  • no point buy a mini mac

  • you can buy at least two of these for the price of one mac mini. stfu, ass.

  • no point in the mac mini,

buy any other mac with a monitor

  • i thought the easy button said pussy lol

  • anyone else find it funny that he using a DELL monitor for his APPLE TV?? thought that was great.

  • HDMI to DVI-D adapter man

  • i just thought it was funny, not that you cant do it. kinda made me giggle at the competitor market

  • yeah really funny... uhhh

  • "THAT WAS EASY"

    EZ button LOL

  • After it boots up, what happens if you press ignore or any of the buttons when it has that error about the disk. Will Mac os x work?

    PLEASE ANSWER

    Thanks

  • Yeah, you just hit ignore and it works fine. I didn't have my mouse and keyboard hooked up for the video, so didn't demonstrate that. Since the AppleTV only has one USB port, you will need a USB 2.0 hub to connect both the hard drive and a keyboard/mouse.

  • If you installed bootcamp, would the apple tv be able to run vista?

  • probably not... because u'd need to do everything in vista. i don't htink apple tv would normally work on vista... so I don't think even having it in bootcamp would help.

not sure tho.. i only have vista.. no mac

  • Jeez n00b; it has a 1GHz Intel CPU, it would work just fine, but the question is: who'd want to use it, anyways?

  • True, vista sux, however you can't use it with vista even when you got the bootcamp working, coz the apple tv has non upgradeable 256mb ram. The memory chip is soldered onto the logic board.

  • whoops.. read that wrong. thought it said "would the able tv be able to run ON vista" haha.. i take back my comment ;)

  • That's so awesome! do you think you can make a video tutorial on how to do this? That would be amazing! Thanks

  • Excuse me for the probably dumb question, but how am I supposed to access those files without any input device such as keyboard or mouse except for the Apple remote? Can you just attach them to the Apple TV and if so, why didn't you do that in the first place?

  • Anyway you can download the videos when you rent them? so like that you can keep them or burn them?

  • is it possible to then install a version on windows on it?

  • doesnt pulling the plug when the hardrive is still running bad

  • no as long as you do not violently shake the harddrive

  • Yes it is bad if the hd is being written to at the time it is unpluged.

  • it runs quite fast actually

  • Yea My Blue and white G3 400 mhz Runs OSX Tiger with no problems and it runs almost smooth.... Not to todays standards though.

  • Actually, there's an easier solution... albeit, a bit shady.

Get yourself a low-end HP mini-tower refurb with a c2d in it. Then, put OS X on that (don't ask me how, not here to tell you... just that others have done it). It's then an easy path to putting front, or back row on the machine for use. Total cost is about 400. And, let's say you want DVI... add 50 bucks.

Let's do some math. Apple TV, plus external HD, is about 400... and is never really expandable. Or, HP tower with OS X.... Hummmm.

  • I don't think the point of this is to run os x for cheap.

  • cheap ass...

  • by the end of the video it shows a website

  • does wifi work, can you use safari?

  • wtf thats the worst external hd

  • hahahahahahahahahah omg yeah its like an internal but he is too cheap so he modded it with a usb hahahaha wow you suck!

  • Its just an external without the cover

  • @daftrok ya

  • Judging by the modificatoins and partitioning of the hard-drive it seems as it would actually be easier to just install OSX by opening the damn thing, running OSX on it will most likeley end the warranty anyway....

  • Running OS X on it off an external drive is completely undetectable to Apple (unless you modify the internal drive). The whole point of this demonstration is how to do cool stuff with your AppleTV WITHOUT voiding the warranty. Once you disconnect the external, it boots right back up as an unmodified AppleTV.

  • can u help me with that

  • dude, its just a video on the HD or apple tv, its a rip

  • Nice job , I liked how you had a easy button and a dollar in the back round.

  • Cool a guite cheap way to make a PC.

  • yeah.. a really really really underpowered and non-expandable computer.

  • awesome!but were did you get the easy button!!!!!!!?

  • Finally! someone found a use for this former paperweight!

  • where can i download all the stuff to put on the hdd?

  • all on a dell 3007 lol

  • I wish it were....but it's only a Dell 2405. I really like it though; I have two of them.

  • Great, I am excited.

  • EASY BUTTON

  • NICE

  • you are my new you tube hacking hero ! ! ! ! you ftw!!!

  • Cool hack. Ever think about doing it with linux so you can get more software running on it? It would be nice to not be confined to iTunes and get a fully functional media center computer in such a small package.

  • Linux is very close. I'll post on my blog when it's working. We have proof of concept for kernel booting and full NVidia acceleration (using the normal Linux driver). My main goal for my aTV is running MythFrontend, so I'm right there with you.

  • Any chance you can get that build of OS X on a torrent site so use less technical people can check it out?

  • It's likely there will be open source (Linux, Darwin) boot images available very shortly. See my blog for details as they come out. As far as torrents of OS X, you're on your own there.
