  • wow what a great man he is!! He is a hero, so very humble so very gentle in his ways!

    God Bless Him!

  • Flawed craft fail-safe designs.

  • Thank you: Danny Fitch, Captain Al Haynes, F/O Records, and S/O Dvorak, for your bravery that day. Experience and teamwork at its greatest.

  • Thank you for posting this series/interview.

  • this whole series should be a case study on 1.) how to tell an absolutely mesmerizing story, beautifully, and 2.) how to shit all over it with the worst interviewing skills imaginable

  • This is probably the best documentation of this event ever. Thankyou for shareing.

  • truely amazing

  • And people think I'm childish for being an anxious flyer...Just a matter of chance

  • You are a hero...

  • Highest regards for Denny Fitch and what he did, but when did he actually take over Command of 232, as he makes it sound? He was not in command of that aircraft. A true Hero, nonetheless...

  • Is this guy better than charleesheen?

  • This guy still flying planes?

  • @Kg277

He retired from UAL in 2003 (mandatory retirement is at age 60)

  • 5:59 I love those old 70's style airport terminal seats. Black faux leather with metal trim, yeah babycakes!

  • This man is your uncle... He deserves to be a king. I will fly in confidence if this man is ever my pilot. God is the ultimate decider.

  • You've left me almost speechless, but full of compassion for life and an infinite respect for you and your family.helluva tale.

  • man i have all the respect in the world for you. if only everyone could be like this. this is one of the most tragic but heroic stories ive heard. you deserve all the honor and respect you can get. you tried your best and thats what counts. hats off to you my friend

  • What an amazing man.

  • This is just stunning. Thank you so much for uploading.

  • What a great episode.. Errol Morris is the master.

  • I hate it when americans include "GOD" in everything that happens in life,it is bullshit............GOD, does not decide shit........

  • @MrPinedours How about this... Fuck you, you GODdamned worthless French piece of shit!

  • @MrPinedours (Isaiah 44:24) - "Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, and the one who formed you from the womb, "I, the Lord, am the maker of all things, stretching out the heavens by Myself, and spreading out the earth all alone." God creates and decides everything, Period.

  • "Your attitude determines your altitude

If you thing you can't, you won't."

    Denny Fitch

  • What an eloquent storyteller and a hero in every sense. Bless you Denny!

  • did the other pilots with him die?

  • @clarenceexd One of the 11 crew members onboard died, but I believe that was a flight atendant. I know that Captain Al Haynes survived, and the injury seat map for Flight 232 seems to indicate that all cockpit seat occupants sustained "serious injuries"

  • If he hadn't of gone to the dc-10 their fate would've been confined.

  • Touching, I cried a little.

  • That guy has stared death rite in the face and shook hands with it and you can see it in his eyes. What people like that hold in there minds after that kind of event, those sounds, those images, the feelings and then they tell you the story. You feel it too but you could never imagine it unless it happens to yourself. I just find it totaly amazing and totaly horrifying. Imagine if he got on that 727.

  • Everybody on the Dc10 would be dead, the fine line between choice here was that of a hair, very very very scary stuff and im going to pipe down now before i send my self crazy thinking about it. God bless ya Danny Fitch.

  • i really wanna hug this man

  • Does anyone have a higher res version of the fatality chart? Does anybody know if the other pilots survived?

  • A real hero who loves to fly and was at the right place at the right time. Let us not forget, however, that Capt Haynes and his crew would have done exactly the same thing even without Capt Fitch.

  • @bolar500 that seems somewhat presumptuous. They may have done worse ... or better. We'll never know.

  • amazing

  • great documentary, amazing person.

  • It makes me sad, that a viewer was so narrow-minded and mean-spirited as to refer to this pilot as arrogant. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that this consummate professional behaved admirably before, during, and after a living nightmare. And it doesn't take a clairvoyant to know that he's as sensitive and grateful, as he is confident and competent. As far I'm concerned, there's no better definition of humble...

  • This makes me want to be a pilot more than ever while simultaneously making me feel unworthy to even consider doing such a thing.

That said, I love the note this ends on. Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • I just watched this a second time. I needed something to put a rough day at work, dealing with an asshole client, into perspective, and this did the trick.

    Great video

  • Ok, I'm on the train...

    this was a great story.

I wonder how many people started these tale videos thinking of writing something stupid, then watched silently until the end.

    I did.

That's one hell of a tale!

  • One of the most intense things I've ever watched. Going from 30.000 ft with no control to landing with survivors is incredible! This man is the definition of hero.

    Errol Morris is brilliant!

  • "fate, chance, luck... whatever you want to believe" believe it was God

  • I guess "god" cut the hydraulics as well? Funny how you vague clowns never seem to give your deity credit for anything bad that happens. Why didn't "god" will a sudden and unscheduled mechanical inspection prior to takeoff? It was arbitrary chance that makes you believe in one god over another, it's the same chance that made him choose all his actions in the crisis, and it was pure chance that he happened to be on that flight. If chance was just only people like you would be on these flights.

  • @VariedInterest You're missing the point. His bravery and character are admirable. The man is a hero. He saved almost 200 people that day.

What God has to do with that is irrelevent.

  • @afterapplepicking

God had nothing to do with this , it was all human bravery and intelligence,

  • @sushi123

God had nothing to do with this , it was all human bravery and intelligence, this man is a hero , don't make it cheap by saying some sort of supernatural power was helping him , it was all this brave mans doing and nothing else.

  • My dad was the Head LCA Coordinator for the 10 Fleet, he knew Denny and always has spoken highly of him. He also tried the scenario of flight 262 in the sims at DenTK , I don't believe that he was able to accomplish what Denny did

  • Born to be a pilot, a destiny to fulfill. He couldn't save them all; but without him none would have survived. Here here, raise your glass and salute the hero. This was an amazing story of a first hand experience with life and death. Whew!

  • True Hero

  • "I've never gone to work,

    I've only gone to fly."

Now, that's loving what you do.

  • This video set is really is a testament to character and keeping hope. Thank you for sharing!

  • *sniff*

  • what a good and brave pilot!!!

  • American hero.

  • wow...he really did the best he could and it's a miracle so many survived. This story is amazing and he is blessed to be alive and those people who survived are blessed that he volunteered to help save them. God bless the families that lost loved ones.

  • i HEAR YOU!!

  • Some people are called. he didnt have to be there. And he saved the day. Thats why he didnt die. So humbling and awesome. Heroic.

  • amazing airmanship

anyone should give him credit for having landed a flying piece of crap more commonly known as "McDonnell Douglas DC-10"

  • @zeppelin64

hear hear, the mcdonnell douglas dc-10 was the most ill-designed lump of monkey spunk ever to leave the ground, and hit it...hard.

  • Wow I'm amazed at the lady who blames him for her daughter dying. What a cunt...

  • Hurt people tend to want to hurt. You can't get back at God so people tend to lash out at whoever they can. I have no doubts that Denny means what he says about wishing she lived and he died. I recently heard him speak and he still wonders what else he could have done.

  • That's my uncle

  • This story was one of the most gripping I have ever experienced. Thank you so much for sharing.

  • @defstoner18 I couldn't agree with you more. Denny Fritch is an amazing man and a true hero.

  • Holy crap this guy is a badass.

  • I had the pleasure of working at United Airlines when Denny was still flying with us (he retired in 2003) and he is just as he appears in this video... a gentleman.

  • Very heart warming, got me teary eyed.

  • Wow. What an incredible tale. What a hero. I think all of Errol Morris films are exceptionally well done - I have only recently heard of him as I am from uk. This is a very moving story about a pilot who saved very many lives.

  • Captain Denny Fitch now flies the Boeing 777 for United Airlines.

  • wat a man a hero and such an emotional story god bless u lol from ireland xxlisa

  • This isn't just a story, this is a message that anyone, not just this man can do this if they can just try and this goes for anything you want to succeed in...and this is one great example and sir you are a hero.

  • yes i agree wit u pump he is a hero i cant even imagine how terrified he and the pssengers must have been

  • Thank God you took the path to the left Denny otherwise everyone was a goner.I hope i fly with crew half as capable as you guys!Amazing!!!!!!!!

  • thats my uncle

  • I am very proud to know him, I cannot doubt that he is an inspiration to me. I am on the road to becoming a pilot.

  • What a man.

  • Such an incredible story, just amazing.

  • Your attitude determines your altitude. If you think you can't, you won't.

Captain Fitch never gave up. He is a personal inspiration and a beloved fellow human being.

I have never met him, but I will never forget him.

  • Is this you tube, wheres the hate?

  • Very powerful & moving. Thanks for posting this.

  • great story

  • :'(

  • you tried your best thats all it matters.

  • Fantastic doco - very well done. What a beautiful man. Its such a strange world we have. Cruel enough to create such a disaster, yet beautiful enough to create such shining example of the best side of humanity.

  • he and the others are amazing pilots

  • Any one on that plane that survived should realize they have this man to thank.

  • AMAZING. God Bless you Denny Fitch and Al Haynes.

  • As jaded and hard as I am, and as overproduced as this likely was - this man's display of humanity has really hit me..

  • bless this man.

  • Though life was lost, Life was saved that would have been taken. Under pressure you did what was best to our abilities.

  • What an amazing man. I hope he doesnt blame him self, despite his self imposed responsibility

  • That's amazing.

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • That is one amazing story.
