Richter was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th Century, but these performances aren't worthy of him. The 5th Concerto, Mozart's first "original" piano concerto, deserves better than this. Richter made no secret of the fact that he preferred Haydn to Mozart. Regardless, this music deserves more preparation and commitment. If that can't be summoned by the performer, for whatever reason, he (or she) should look elsewhere for inspiration.
Sometimes the greatest show of pure mastery is what the Maestro does NOT do. Notice the "cadenza" in K. 175 (at 48:07.) The orchestra reaches the proper chord and Richter joins and holds. It is as if he thinks about it, we have a slow breath to recall the melodies, the Mozartean harmony and counterpoint; and where a "virtuoso" would invent some brilliant runs and figures, Richter [says,] "I can't 'improve' on Mozart," and strikes the trill! He plays no cadenza AT ALL, and the result is sublime!
This is the first time I hear Sviatoslav Richter play Mozart ~ and I can say: I like it very much! Watching his hands is sheer pleasure. No exaggeration whatsoever ~ no unnecessary gestures. Just utterly expressive (and impressive!) virtuosity!
@trainfart ;o) this 1hour24minute-video consists of 3 different concerts. So try to consume at least one (if you like Mozart, Piano & S. Richter it will be well worth your time! Have a good evening. Hugs, Karin
