Been there...done that. An ice storm had left "spikes" at the top of a tree I planned on brushing as I landed. It's a horrible feeling!! I'm glad no one was injured.
Being a pilot myself, I can say sometimes these things happen. No need for technical discussion on pilot error, improper this or improper that. And if this happened to you, would you report it and take the fine from the FAA? Some people are just too honest, and at that point... Why would you call the police to tell them you are "about to be doing illegal fireworks on the 4th of July, better come fine me"?? lol
Improper inflation location. Pilot error. Failed to follow flight manual directions to have adequate free area downwind of the takeoff location. P.S.- Did this get reported to the NTSB? Substantial damage- reportable accident under 14 CFR part 830.

same balloon emergency landed in the salem walmart parking lot in front of the Lawn & Garden door with three passengers on board.
