@jkjl234 the piercing sounds you make, soaring higher higher now, and once left in my wake, your memory is nothing but the scars on me! and together the lines just make a cacophony of chills.
@javi0421 Lopez is so extremely SLOPPY in this song! My god, the speed varies, tons of mistakes in the fills... even the first refrain is already fucked
@TouchMyHandHoles, playing your parts differently can also add to a performance. Lopez adds a lot more to the music and he puts in a lot of variations in his fills and also the beats. If done nicely it can definitely add to a performance. But, then again, people will have different opinions on what fits and what doesn't.
@Bearthoughts I can tell you that my history with playing with a drummer that changes fills or ad new stuff diffenetley throws you off. When I see a band play, which I have seen Opeth 3 or 4 times I want them to "nail" the album not put in extra stuff. But, like you said its just preferance.
@TouchMyHandHoles, well that really should depend on how you add them. Are we talking about completely new fills/parts or just some minor tweaks like ghost notes or a syncopation on the snare? I know as a drummer myself that if I really want to it's easy to fuck up for the guys I play with, but on a high level like Opeth, few of those things should really throw you off. But then again, I guess they are used to it (heard it when they rehearse etc.).
@squiresuzuki This is some of the sloppiest shittiest drumming I heard in metal. Get some feeling for steadiness and listen to the fills, tons of mistakes
@Thystonius, you have to be kidding me... or be in troll mode... seriously. Ever heard of triplet feel? Or the ability to mix subdivisions in a fill? Or have you ever played quick groups of notes on an untriggered floor tom?Or a tom which is tuned low? Ever heard of odd time signatures? Most of what I assume you call sloppy is caused as a result of what I said. But sure,Lopez has made mistakes in the past and might make a few here and there but he's got FEEL+groove.Get a sense of swing (pun).

@Thystonius Sloppiness actually adds to a death metal performance if it's done right like it is here... calculated double bass rythms are boring.

@Deliverance02x Yeah, death metal should be rotten and disgusting not clean and lovely.
AnthemsToTheWelkin 1 month ago
@Deliverance02x No, playing your parts correctly adds to a death metal performance, this shows his lack of focus before he left the band.
