Curitiba is a beautiful city because of people like Jaime Lerner. I would love him to return to the policy and further improve our city.
aw this movie Friday at a special screening. This is one of the most inspiring & hopeful movies I have seen in several years. It floored me that government official of Curitiba have been working for 30 years for the benefit of citizens and the earth, addressing so social problems at the same time tackling logical public transportation, waste disposal, health & poverty. If you can find a nearby screening, do not miss it. My next vacation destination.
Hahahaha.

I agree. There are plenty of movies that show the negative aspects of Brazil, but not enough that show the positive. If you have time, check out the full movie. It can be found on amazon.com. It has the same title as this trailer.

Concordo. The city is one of the most violent of Brasil nowadays

I'm from the US and I've been living in Curitiba for a year now. It's an absolutely wonderful place. Downtown Curitiba is probably my favorite place in the world. oh, this is beautiful city and i love it. but the crime over there is getting out of hand. this weekend 33 crimes in curitiba alone, total crime in all state of parana? 50. it`s scary to think how the government is letting this happened in a city and state like this. seems that they care less about people killing people, unless it is committed to some members of their family. this is a reality of our city right now. curitiba esta virando baderna e refugio de bandidos. cidade sem lei.
@giovdb I have lived there. it is a wonderful city except for a couple: 1. It rains frequently and I was there during one of the driest years. 2. Central heating is not a feature there--and it get rather cold. But you should check it out for yourself!
@efrainl956 I'm brazillian, and all i can tell u if u really wanna move to curitiba or any other brazilian city then learn portuguese otherwise you gonna fell like you're alone in the world (really.. they just don't speak english no matter what :/ ). In rio in the other hand even the thieves will rob you in english if they find you :D but don't worry curitiba is far far far away from rio...
now they have the first intelligent stop light for the busses line.. when the bus approach the light it automaticly turns green and it closes aftervthe bus leave.. its very safe for night shifts to avoid crimes and roberies
Why would Curitiba want to look like LA? What you are saying makes no sense. LA is pure chaos. Also, Curitiba began its innovations in the seventies. Am I missing something here?
Somebody said this video was outdated and Curitiba was currently adding freeways. After visiting Curitiba courtesy of the US FTA, L.A. added rapid buses because they don't know how to build a rail system.
This video is by no means against building freeways. Freeways are essential in connecting cities and connecting opposing parts of a city. Curitiba has a great freeway system that surrounds the city. So if u are in one end of the city, and u would like to go to the other, instead of having to go through the city and crowd its center, you can get the surrounding freeway to avoid the city center, helping reduce traffic. Curitiba is not against cars; it simply provides an amazing alternative to it.
And yes, LA did put some rapid buses, but it's only a portion of Curitiba's solutions. In order for the system to work really well you have to adapt all aspects of the Curitiba model.
Curitiba transports 2 million passengers daily with its bus system and IT MAKES MONEY WITH IT. Rail is much more expensive and the faire has to be at least triple the bus in order to MAYBE cover its expenses. A proper "above ground subway system" using buses is the way to go, no question.
@giovdb "IT MAKES MONEY WITH IT" That's impressive. In Boston we have to put up with shitty service AND out transportation system is going bankrupt thanks to incompetent leaders and a bureaucracy that all but prevents anyone from overhauling the system and firing the people who screwed it up. Of course its an old city (by American standards) so achieving something like Curitiba is out of the question. They tried to fix the traffic problem but 20 billion dollars later there isn't much improvement
Man... If Curitiba would even attempt to looks like L.A I would never go back home... Curitiba is great just the way it is... and is getting improved and not getting messed out like L.A
All the measures presented were taken decades ago.
Nowadays Curitiba is investing hard for car infrastructure. If we still have a livable city it's the remainings of that era that wont stand much longer.
We hava one of the most polluted urban rivers and the casualties on traffic are absurd. And I can point you to more info about this...
A video like this is truly misguiding and avoid facing the real problems
And did you notice there aren't any bikes on the video?
And if Curitiba is really investing in car infrastructure as you say, then it's another reason for you to watch the documentary and tell to as many people as possible about it. We have to focus on the positive things Curitiba has done and make sure they'll never go away. In fact, we have to make sure they spread throughout the world. If the entire world applied the solutions presented in the full documentary, then we would not be having any climate problems.
And Curitiba is not only one of the biggest cities, but it's also the most rapidly growing city in Brazil, so slums are a natural occurrence. The city of Curitiba, however, does a lot more than any other city in Brazil to provide these people with education, health and jobs. The slums in Curitiba are richer than many neighborhoods of São Paulo.
This per capita crime is bullcrap. Please list your source.
But what you call slums in Curitiba is very different than slums in other cities in Brazil. I was driving for 30 minutes inside of this slum (favela) and didn't know we were inside of the slum. Their standard of living is much higher.
Once I've lived for many years in Curita and I used to work in SP as well. As I know very well both of the cities I must say that the comment below is a little misguided.
No doubts, that all city has some kind of problem. But say that we have more violence than Sao Paulo is insane.

Curtiba makes me soooo friggin happy, in 1969 they started to make it more sustainable and now it is the most sustainable city in the world, almost 40 years of smart technology has been used and 99% of the population wouldnt want to live anywhere else...we need more cities like this and more leaders with sustainable goals...Profit is a joke, we will never see anything done unless there is some profit involved and thats ridiculous, we need smart management of our resources and of our future
Curitiba is the best city in Brazil and took the economic and regional position of Porto Alegre. Curitiba is the biggest city and main economic center in southern Brazil.
the people says that "it's a enganous propaganda about the city"... and what you see in television or internet about New York or Los Angeles i garantee to you that is more enganous than this video about Curitiba... ¬¬
Ive been dragged to this city by this kind of propaganda. I could be anywhere els in the south of Brazil, but here I am, studying Graphic Design... It is not that huge amazing thing as excessively shown on the video, but it is definitely an outstanding city in therms of urban transport and ecology; if compared to other brazilian urban centers.
Despite the good things and almost unic qualities, this city is like any other....high crime rate and violence are part of it also
Watch the documentary, not just the trailer. It's all fact and no bull crap. There is a lot more to the city than meets the eye. You are probably not aware of most of the great things the city has to offer to the underprivileged population.
Also, don't focus so much on the problems. Every place has problems. Curitiba is no exception. However, look at the creative ways that Curitiba was able to tackle a lot of it's problems and you'll see how Curitiba stands out from other cities.
Sometimes when you are from a place, you have a hard time seeing it's qualities. I'm from São Paulo and I live in California. I've traveled to many cities, and I've never seen a city as well planned as Curitiba. When I was stuck in traffic in the wide streets of Los Angeles yesterday, I was laughing at them as I thought on how easy it would be to fix such problems.
Don't base yourself on the trailer. I couldn't put much information there. Watch the movie.
I have met Jaime Lerner and his team personally, and I have to say I have never been inspired by anybody else in this world in the same way. If they are being "sold," it's because they deserve it. They are very simple people and very dedicated to Curitiba and to other cities as well.
Curitiba *nao e* superior as outras capitais brasileiras.
When I first arrived in Curitiba I was also not very impressed. But as I learned about everything that it has to offer to its people. I was blown away. There is a lot beneath the surface that the common eye cannot see. I'm sure there are other great minds that deserve recognition, but you should watch the whole movie (not just the trailer) so you can learn more about your city.
I live in Curitiba, and think it is a lovely place. I moved here from London where I was born. I find Curitiba much safer, cleaner and environmentally freindly. How many people in Europe would pick up litter and sort it in exchange for food like they do here, i take my hat off to the people who do this work in Curitiba, and admire and respect them for what they do. The nanny states of Europe have a lot learn from this city.
New Orleans would have been fine if there had been better city planning and there wasn't government corruption that made the levies unsafe. We in the US need to get a grip on our democracy and claim people power so we can put innovate solutions like those in Cuitiba into place.
that's truth, I was born in Curitiba and mved recently. The city is not best of the world, but considering its location at Brazil and its size, Curitiba is a well developed city.
Of course there is poverty, violence and social problems, but at least is less than other brazilian capitals
hey i have some questions for u. are there black people in brazil? is there a racism problem there? can u live there and only speak american? is it fun in brazil.
i have some ancestors there and i feel i have to go there to see wats up.
Yes, there are a lot of blacks here. Racism is a problem, but it's a sort of tabu. We don't speak "american", we speak portuguese, but the medium and upper class frequently speaks english and spanish.
The southern region (where i live) was colonized mainly by europeans (mainly italians, portuguese and germans, with polish, ukrainian and other minorities), but as in any brazilian region, there's a great diversity. Brazil has also the biggest lebanese community outside Lebanon.
Curitiba is the best city to live in Brazil. It is much safer and nicer to leave than many cities in developed countries, there is no muslim or religion clashes in Brazil, no terrorism, no earthquakes and tornados. This video does exagerate but the truth is, there is no school shootings in Brazil buddy :D
There is no exageration. Cities from all over the world, especially from developed countries, go to Curitiba to learn from them. Some of the cities that traveled to Curitiba to take classes and learn from them include Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Seattle, and many many others. Watch the video and you will all understand.
Please feel free to send this trailer to as many people as possible. It's very important that many people see this film and learn about this wonderful city.
Where can i access this movie from the U.k?

oh, this is beautiful city and i love it. but the crime over there is getting out of hand. this weekend 33 crimes in curitiba alone, total crime in all state of parana? 50. it`s scary to think how the government is letting this happened in a city and state like this. seems that they care less about people killing people, unless it is committed to some members of their family. this is a reality of our city right now. curitiba esta virando baderna e refugio de bandidos. cidade sem lei.

Does the video documentary also show what I would need to do to move over there? I've always wanted to live there.

No. The video shows the innovations about the city. You would have to contact the Brazilian consulate if you are interested in visiting/moving there.
giovdb 2 years ago

I heard L.A. is trying to look like this. Maybe Curitiba is trying to look like L.A. Isn't media hype cool?
mjolles 2 years ago
Why would Curitiba want to look like LA? What you are saying makes no sense. LA is pure chaos. Also, Curitiba began its innovations in the seventies. Am I missing something here?
giovdb 2 years ago
Somebody said this video was outdated and Curitiba was currently adding freeways. After visiting Curitiba courtesy of the US FTA, L.A. added rapid buses because they don't know how to build a rail system.
mjolles 2 years ago
This video is by no means against building freeways. Freeways are essential in connecting cities and connecting opposing parts of a city. Curitiba has a great freeway system that surrounds the city. So if u are in one end of the city, and u would like to go to the other, instead of having to go through the city and crowd its center, you can get the surrounding freeway to avoid the city center, helping reduce traffic. Curitiba is not against cars; it simply provides an amazing alternative to it.
giovdb 2 years ago
And yes, LA did put some rapid buses, but it's only a portion of Curitiba's solutions. In order for the system to work really well you have to adapt all aspects of the Curitiba model.
Curitiba transports 2 million passengers daily with its bus system and IT MAKES MONEY WITH IT. Rail is much more expensive and the faire has to be at least triple the bus in order to MAYBE cover its expenses. A proper "above ground subway system" using buses is the way to go, no question.
giovdb 2 years ago
@giovdb "IT MAKES MONEY WITH IT" That's impressive. In Boston we have to put up with shitty service AND out transportation system is going bankrupt thanks to incompetent leaders and a bureaucracy that all but prevents anyone from overhauling the system and firing the people who screwed it up. Of course its an old city (by American standards) so achieving something like Curitiba is out of the question. They tried to fix the traffic problem but 20 billion dollars later there isn't much improvement
Kagemusha08 1 year ago
@giovdb Might be difficult to implement in the sprawl of LA.
000DNJ 1 year ago
Man... If Curitiba would even attempt to looks like L.A I would never go back home... Curitiba is great just the way it is... and is getting improved and not getting messed out like L.A
davidbelha 2 years ago 2
All the measures presented were taken decades ago.
Nowadays Curitiba is investing hard for car infrastructure. If we still have a livable city it's the remainings of that era that wont stand much longer.
We hava one of the most polluted urban rivers and the casualties on traffic are absurd. And I can point you to more info about this...
A video like this is truly misguiding and avoid facing the real problems
And did you notice there aren't any bikes on the video?
bicicwb 3 years ago
Buy and watch the documentary and you will see bikes.
giovdb 3 years ago
And if Curitiba is really investing in car infrastructure as you say, then it's another reason for you to watch the documentary and tell to as many people as possible about it. We have to focus on the positive things Curitiba has done and make sure they'll never go away. In fact, we have to make sure they spread throughout the world. If the entire world applied the solutions presented in the full documentary, then we would not be having any climate problems.

giovdb 2 years ago
And Curitiba is not only one of the biggest cities, but it's also the most rapidly growing city in Brazil, so slums are a natural occurrence. The city of Curitiba, however, does a lot more than any other city in Brazil to provide these people with education, health and jobs. The slums in Curitiba are richer than many neighborhoods of São Paulo.
This per capita crime is bullcrap. Please list your source.
giovdb 3 years ago
But what you call slums in Curitiba is very different than slums in other cities in Brazil. I was driving for 30 minutes inside of this slum (favela) and didn't know we were inside of the slum. Their standard of living is much higher.

No doubts, that all city has some kind of problem. But say that we have more violence than Sao Paulo is insane.

Curtiba makes me soooo friggin happy, in 1969 they started to make it more sustainable and now it is the most sustainable city in the world, almost 40 years of smart technology has been used and 99% of the population wouldnt want to live anywhere else...we need more cities like this and more leaders with sustainable goals...Profit is a joke, we will never see anything done unless there is some profit involved and thats ridiculous, we need smart management of our resources and of our future

jucrete888 3 years ago
Ive been dragged to this city by this kind of propaganda. I could be anywhere els in the south of Brazil, but here I am, studying Graphic Design... It is not that huge amazing thing as excessively shown on the video, but it is definitely an outstanding city in therms of urban transport and ecology; if compared to other brazilian urban centers.
Despite the good things and almost unic qualities, this city is like any other....high crime rate and violence are part of it also
raonipaes 3 years ago 2
Watch the documentary, not just the trailer. It's all fact and no bull crap. There is a lot more to the city than meets the eye. You are probably not aware of most of the great things the city has to offer to the underprivileged population.
giovdb 3 years ago
Also, don't focus so much on the problems. Every place has problems. Curitiba is no exception. However, look at the creative ways that Curitiba was able to tackle a lot of it's problems and you'll see how Curitiba stands out from other cities.
giovdb 3 years ago
Sometimes when you are from a place, you have a hard time seeing it's qualities. I'm from São Paulo and I live in California. I've traveled to many cities, and I've never seen a city as well planned as Curitiba. When I was stuck in traffic in the wide streets of Los Angeles yesterday, I was laughing at them as I thought on how easy it would be to fix such problems.
Don't base yourself on the trailer. I couldn't put much information there. Watch the movie.

sometimes when you're not from a place, you have a hard time seeing the faces it doesn't sell.

I have met Jaime Lerner and his team personally, and I have to say I have never been inspired by anybody else in this world in the same way. If they are being "sold," it's because they deserve it. They are very simple people and very dedicated to Curitiba and to other cities as well.

Elvis1924 3 years ago
Curitiba *nao e* superior as outras capitais brasileiras.

When I first arrived in Curitiba I was also not very impressed. But as I learned about everything that it has to offer to its people. I was blown away.

We in the US need to get a grip on our democracy and claim people power so we can put innovate solutions like those in Cuitiba into place.

markell89 4 years ago

RRRPL 4 years ago
There is no exageration. Cities from all over the world, especially from developed countries, go to Curitiba to learn from them. Some of the cities that traveled to Curitiba to take classes and learn from them include Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Seattle, and many many others. Watch the video and you will all understand.
