I find it interesting that the F59PHI is relied on the most for passenger service in the Pacific Northwest but Caltrain uses the MP36PH-3C now. Can someone tell me why?
Wow i didn't know that. So are there plans for Metrolink Coaster and the Pacific Surfliner to switch over to the MP36PH-3C or are they goin to operate the F59's until the "California High-Speed Rail" network is established?
Not sure, Metrolink recently got a few MP36PH-3C's though. If there are any plans for any of those agencies to replace locomotives, the MP36's would most likely be the choice. It doesn't really have anything to do with HSR, that's a whole different topic.
Ah I see but now what about the GE genesis engine, how would you compare that to the MP36PH-3C and would that be a posible replacement for the Pacific surfliner and Metrolink routes
The Genesis engines are also obsolete, they're not making new ones anymore. GE's currently working on a new passenger model for the Evolution Series. The Genesis' were made for long distance applications, and aren't really suited for commuter operations. Occasionally, you'll see one working the Surfliners though.
wow, so then what would be a competitor to the mp36's (if there is one), I'm asking all these questions because I've just got back into Railroading and I live in Las Vegas were there really aren't any trains so now that I'm in california for the summer I've seen the surfliner and Metrolinke more and got back into the railroading community. And you have been really Insightful

The F59PHI is old and obsolete, they're not made anymore. The "MPXpress" Locomotive series is the newest and most popular passenger locomotive today.

Nope, there aren't any major competitors to the MPXpress locomotives as of now, but I'm sure there will be soon.

Yeah I can't imagine GE or someone just sit back and let MotivePower take over the industy.

Caltrain's MP36's have a Catapiler Genset for HEP, where as the Metra's have an invertor.

MP36's out in Cali sound a bit different from MP's out here in Chicago. Nice catch.

Thanks, I think it's because Caltrain's are MP36PH-3C and Metra's are MP36PH-3S, I'm not sure what the difference is though.

Another difference is the horns. Caltrain has Nathan P2's while Metra's have Nathan K5LA's.
