I play with my fingers but a pick is always the solution Ill turn to if I cant move my fingers. Give the man a break if he's playing with a pick, he's still playing it REALLY well. Man, this is awesome. This was one of the first tunes I learned on bass in 1989 when I started playing ( Along with Clairvoyant and Hallowed ). I have not played for a few years now ( my 4 daughters have taken up most of my time for the last few years ) but I still have my old P Bass in the wardrobe waiting for a triumphant return to action. Because that is how I roll. If I find that I like the sound better with a pick, then out it comes. I play faster, cleaner, and with much more feeling with a pick on fast tunes.

You are correct....with the fingers I just cannot get the speed and feeling for the really fast tunes. I like things to be tight.

I started with a pick and did so until I was 20 years old. Even though I learned to play with fingers, I will never be completely natural with them. The pick is how I play best. However, I play with fingers on every tune in which I can have power and feeling, which is just about everything but thrash/death metal and faster Maiden. I do it so I can slap/tap at will.

and i actually thought of a question, well obviously very well done, but on the intro, do you run your index over both strings, then your middle, or do you have your index on 1 sting and your middle on the other and you alternate? thanks very much mr.rockin :)

I use both fingers and alternate. The A string is the index finger and the G string is the middle...although sometimes I use the ring finger for that string....depending on how tired my middle finger gets.

Perhaps if you were reading a tab, but the way I play it is all octaves with base notes on the A string. Except the parts in "A", which are octaves played off of closed notes on the E string. But that's my way...playing things different than the "official" way.

Definitely awesome! I used to play this song on my Ibanez "Destoyer" bass back in the early 80's when I was a teenager and it was my song of choosing when I tried out for metal bands. It was always my favorite Iron Maiden song! I used my fingers to play it but unlike the earlier comment where somebody criticized you for using a pick I'm sure if Steve Harris saw this video he would like it not put it down!

I do not claim to play in Steve's style. I play with my style, which stretches from slap to fingerstyle, to tapping, to a pick, depending on the song, the tone called for, and my endurance level. If you wish to see someone play Steve in a strict replicative manner, I suggest you look elsewhere.
