  • I do not agree with Albert Murray. You can and should embrace entropy. For a good cultural reference on why, see Sun Ra's movie about "Jazz is Dead". Sun Ra - Cry of Jazz (2004)

  • Amen Charlie !!

  • All in all a very good documentary. Thanks!

  • When the Free Jazz album came out I was living in Europe. I'd read about Coleman so I bought the LP. I still have it and, occasionally, play it to assure myself how bad it is.

  • its seems you can do anything and some people will call you a genius

  • the first punk band haha

  • I've always loved Coleman's music and am happy to learn about the backgrounds etc. this way. Thanks

  • Which is this song name??? The theme @1:52 is amazing. I need to get it!!! ty in advance...

  • @pedrofireman It's Focus on sanity (the shape of jazz to come) after the bass solo

  • john coltrane knows whats up

  • whats the track playing at 1:25? HELP PLEASE

  • All jazz is about American freedom? What is that guy talking about?

  • No offence but that bit at 3:43 proves jazz musicians can be kinda selfish. That music becomes so self-indulgent it can only be identified with and understood by the author and some snob people who pretend to understand it (usually cause they're stoners). Recording that kind of musical piece is easier then pealing potatoes as long as you can improvise on your own instrument.

  • @Itsooz not true. i got into this stuff as a teenager. you play what you want if people like it they do if they don't, but the artist reserves to do what he likes. was picasso selfish.

  • @17205513 I know, I'm just saying it's hard for me to be impressed by it from a listener's point of view when it sounds like guys tuning their instruments, no matter how good the musicians are.

  • @Itsooz Music (or any art) isn't supposed to be understood. You experience music, you listen to it. Maybe you could prove that it IS that easy.

  • @Itsooz if you think anyone can play it you don't know anything

  • @edcerc As I said. Feed drugs to a musician with broad technical knowledge and skills and you got yourself a free jazz musician..

  • @Itsooz did ornette coleman do drugs?

  • @edcerc Dunno about him, but hell of a lot of jazz artists did. Although the thing I'm talking about is not limited to this genre alone. I just don't like when a musical piece gets so bizarre, it loses all the groove, rhythm, timing, key, basically anything a listener can relate to and follow.

  • @Itsooz thie thing about free jazz is that it has more groove/rhythm than almost any music. just cause some listeners can't follow it doesn't take away from people that do. I have been listening to and playing this music for years so it might sound bizarre to you but to me its just average music that i love. i listen to a lot of different music from classical to hip hop but people like john coltrane and albert ayler are to me the most talented and creative.

  • @edcerc I respect your opinion. It's just that I don't 'feel' this kind of musical expression at all.

  • Thanks for posting. I thought this was awesome and I'm not even a jazz fan!

  • This is really great. Thanks for posting it.

  • Ornette Coleman is sick.

  • @bjazzer795 ...and sickness will surely take the mind, where minds can't usually go.

So who will come on this Amazing Journey; The Adventure.

Who will walk through the mirror door?

  • What time in Jazz 1959 was.
