@patrick55520 my grandad gpot every song they did all on tapes he bought a long time ago and now got em on cd. he got them from a market stall. thats the only place you will find them i think on a market
My name is Maggie. People sing this to me all of the time, so I finally decided to look it up. I know the lyrics, and I haven't even heard this song before >.<
I'd never heard their music till now but this is nice. I have a wide range of musical tastes lol, liking Avril Lavigne, Taylor Swift, even some of The BeeGees
I am a 71 year old Japanese. I remember that day when I heard this song from the radio first time 53 years ago at the age of 18. Since then this song has been my most favorite song in the world. Three years ago, I was attacked by an acute type-A aortic dissection, but survived miraculously by the devoted care of my wife and daughter.
....and the trials of life nealy done...lets sing of the days that are gone, Maggie, when you and I were young...
I remember this one my dad singing it to my sister. she died at the young age of 48 of cancer so it means a lot to me. Bless them all my dad mum and maggie now roam the hills of heaven together. forever in my thoughts xxx
my grandad used to sing this to my gran after a few drinks .. can still remember his wee voice R.I.P Granda mick x 10th Dec 1998 x R.I.P Granny Maw 6th Dec 2010 love you two to the end of the world and back again in my thoughts every day x hope I made yous proud x
went to see you on tuesday 10th may 2011 with my mum for her 65th birthday in shrewsbury would just like to say it was a fantastic night and we both sang ourselves out xx
@lisah7874 hey. A lot of people were saying how it reminds them of an older relative who they have lost. That's why i said I'm just her because it is beautiful. it doesn't really remind me of anyone (except maybe my dad now I think about it :-P)
My Bampa paddy used to sing this to my Nanna Maggie before he died 11 years ago, and yesterday morning my Nanna died and went to be with my Bampa again, I haven't stop listening to this song since yesterday, It helps to think they are together again and singing this song........R.I.P My Wee Nanna....x x x
i loved my Ma singing this she always sings it. she is not the same when we lost my Dad. he is one person that we really miss still cant believe the lord took him early. love my Ma dearly she stays in canada and loved my da too sure miss them
My Grandmother used to sing this song to my Father when he was a child. We played this song at my darling Mother's funeral. This beautiful music lives always in your heart.
This is 1 of my GRAND-GRANDAD'S very favorite songs. this was played at his funeral...I remember as a kid learning to sing this song just so i could sing it for him and my NANA...xoxoxo
I remember listening to this song as a boy, touring the highlands of Scotland with my Mum and Dad. I didn't realise how much it meant to me 25 years later, after I heard it on the radio while working in Weston-Super-Mare, going through the immigration process to be with my wife in Canada. I was sitting in my car in tears outside the supermarket, thinking about this song, my parents from Ireland, and missing my Canadian wife. The good news is that we are together in Canada now, at last.
GOOD AND I AGREE WITH THE PEOPLE WHO SAID" WHAT THE HELL DOES IT MATTER WHERE IT CAME FROM " FOSTER AND ALLEN AND THE FUREY'S SING IT REALLY WELL THATS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT SO TAKE YOUR BOO0K OF ANSWER AND LOOK UP WHY DO I HAVE TO ALWAYS SHOVE MY NOSE IN XX
A lot of people think this is an Irish song but in actual fact it's written about a school teacher, Mr. Johnson and his beautiful wife Maggie who died very young in a little village called Binbrook, Ontario.

Mum and Dad have passed away in the past twelve months but dad has far ha I can remember sung this song to mum either though her name was Vi It means a lot to every couple I miss dad's singing and mum looking at him
The first time i heard this song was at the lammas fair in Ballycastle, i was about 10 in the pub with me ma n 4 aunts and some ould doll feckin killed it about 3 times, feck i hated it. (not now of course). I suffered post traumatic stress for about 3 years after that! then i heard it sang properly....... and was cured.
I would like to personally like to thank everyone whom gave this the thumbs up.
I so still miss the" main man".
My mum and I were up at his grave 2 weeks ago for his birthday, I need to ask him why he still has not drunk the whisky? or are you leaving it for mum's 80'th next year.
@jamestookie Hey buddy your right it doesn't get any easier, the thing that helps is we remember them yeah sometimes we will laugh and some sometImes we will cry. More often than not it will be the latter. Spose we just have to be glad that they were part of our lives and part of them will live on through us, something we can pass on. Keep your chin up buddy soldier on, STAY STRONG FAMILY IS VERY IMPORTANT. Hey they say god's garden is beauitfull as he only picks the BEST
Just a big thank you to all the people who gave this the thumbs up. I miss my dad so much and think of him every day. Was at his grave 2 weeks ago with my wee mum for his birthday.
We miss you dad, love form James, John & Gordon & all the family
wow! What memories. When I was in grade school we had an old Boar war soldier who was our teacher. Every couple of days he would have the class sing this song (probably it invoked memories in him) for him. That was back in the days of WW2.
these guys remind me of sitting with my granda listining to his records.....i hope they never get forgotten as songs like this are old but will never die
It's been 6 months since I last played this beautiful song and it still brings tears to my eyes every time no matter how hard I try not to cry. I can still see my Mom "Maggie" with her apron on making dinner for my Dad after his long day at work. If it was Friday night I could expect to hear my Dad sing Maggie and another song called "I'm walking the floor over you" by Roy Acuff . Damn, that was so long ago but when I hear Maggie being sung by Foster and Allen I can picture it so clear.
This was one of my parents favourite songs..Sadly they are no longer with me, but everytime I hear this song, it brings back lovely memories of them - its very comforting
Love this song....brings back many happy memories of my 2 years in Scotland in the 1960's.. Love all the people in Great Britain. Greetings from North Carolina - USA.
@WC86EVA was wondering if you could tell me why you think of scotland and great britain when you here this they are irish band ?????? and its an irish ballad
It was written by an English Canadian immigrant George Washington Johnson, lets face it any song sung by an Irishman becomes an Irish song :) did you know "Danny Boy" was written by an English man and first made famous by an English woman?
well mum you died last week your with me gran now and you knew she loved this so till i c u 2 again thanx 4 being my mum wud never have another god bless you princess peace at last xxxxxx
This is the anniversary of my sister's passing. We use to sing this song together all the time. Now when I sing the song, I change the word "Maggie" to "Bette". I miss her more than words can say. She was my best friend for more then 68 years. May she rest in peace.
Sorry folks I was full of juice !!with my last post, my mum is still alive and very much kicking at 79 years young. This was my dads song to her and as I said in my last post my dad was so proud to be Scottish but love Irish music. He used to sing this every Saturday to my mum. Dad your family miss you so much. Your grandson named after you is getting engaged shortly to a wonderful girl. He like you cant pick his nose when it comes to the football coupon Haha LOVE YOU FOREVER
James, this was my dad's song to my mum also. Sadly he is no longer with us, he died in 2002, not a day goes by without a thought of him. He was from MAYO, the best county in EIRE. Your comment brought a tear to my eye. God bless.
Thank you Very much for a very very special song. Dad we so miss you. Mum we love you so much, I wished we had the technoligy when you were alive. Folks I mean he was so Foster & Allen he loved them. And for you sad people he was 110% prod and Scottish and proud
Have almost all of Foster and Allens songs. Took me forever, most out of date, or never heard of in the U.S. Thank heaven for youtube,or a lot of musicians wouldn't be heard of here.
This song brought tears to my aging eyes when I heard it today. My Dad would sing this song after a few Irish ales to my Mom when I was growing up. My Moms given name was Maggie. They've both be gone for years now and this Irish boy is really having a tough time just typing this.
I know I would love a guy to love me for all those years and still be so in love like in this song- the song reminds me it can and does happen in real life, not just fairy stories!
think of the good times with your mum, idid the same , thats was 9 year ago but i still love the song, thing will get better . i know what youare going through
Rodlumsden I am very sorry for your sad loss. I know exactly how you feel, this song always reminds me of my darling Mum, sometimes I am heartbroken to hear it, sometimes it makes me smile!
Dad, Its almost 2 years to the day since your were sadly taken from us. It does not get any easier. We are still looking after your wonderfull wife and our super mum.
She misses you so much, will be up to see you tomorrow, We still sing Maggie when we get the chance we will never forget the good times when you sung this song to mum.
God is looking after the good people now and you are certainly with them.
I first heard this song when I was 11 years old back in 1967. My schoolteacher, who has long since passed away, sang it to the class. I thought it was a beautiful song and it made a lasting impression on me.
@llewellyndavies1 i'm on the other side of the fence than you in Ireland...I'm a Catholic and I supported the IRA in my youth, but not now....I live in edinburgh and iv grown up from all the republican shit i used to be in.....I like your comment llewln...great ballad
@dopeke20 Grow up and go back to the dark ages and take your biased political poison with you. We are here to listen to some decent music and share peoples thoughts of where they enjoyed the music and who with and the memories they hold. If you want to talk politics got to a political web page, you will be no loss to this page.
am only 32 years old, love foster and allen. lost ma sister years ago she was only 16. 20 years later i have lost ma mum love and miss them with every beat of ma heart.
My grandma and grandad uses to play this to each other and dance romantically....it really was the sweetest thing i ever seen. They were married 50 odd years before they died. This song brings them back to life to me and i see them now...dancing for eternity. Thank you for posting this precious song. x

God bless.
