  • There will NEVER be another Pete Maravich or Larry Bird. Kids today are too distracted by television and video games. They just aren't going to put in the necessary time to develop their skills like Maravich did.

  • Pistol Pete's rocking number 23. Hmmm coincidence.

  • Everything's great except... #2 in NCAA wat's up with that. You gave #1 to Bird.

I didn't see Bird averaging 44.1 a game.He was good yeah but Pistol Pete was just a better scorer in college, and a better ball handler, and a better passer. It wouldn't be fair to compare NBA because Bird had the advantige of the 3 point line, and played on a better all-round team, where as with Pete they established the 3 point line the year he left, and played basically was the whole team on the Jazz and the Hawks

  • @Asa23447 Pete gets the nod for better scorer but not shooter. Why? because Pete shot 44% from the field and Bird shot 53%.. Accuracy plays an important part here and Bird was much more accurate. I would also disagree with your statement that Pete was a better passer. Bird threw some incredible no look, behind the back, redirected touch passes in college that were breathtaking, and he did it in heavy traffic. If Pete had more assists it was because he was a guard.

  • @mrho4speed bird had some ridiculous range and was more accurate, i agree. but pistol had amazing handles and i would argue to say he was a better passer than larry bird. Now im not bashing larry birds play making ability, hes definitely a good passer but id say pistol edges him out by a bit

  • after mj pistol got the sweets jump shot on nba history

  • Its cool how you guys have look down on this guy.... He averaged 44 points a game in college and we one of the NBA"s top players ever.

  • Uh, Walton's statement at the 0:49 mark: I guess he never heard of someone by the name of Adolph Rupp or a place called Kentucky. Maravich's LSU never beat UK which was a top ten team back in those days (and top ranked in 1970, Maravich's senior season). Pistol Pete scored 64 in one game against Kentucky in 1970, but, unfortunately for the Tigers, the Wildcats lit 'em up for 121 points & a 16-pt win.

  • @herk650 way to go flavio!!

  • If he would have played for Bobby Knight, Knight would have ruined him.

  • This list is not complete without Rick Mount of Purdue. 61 pts vs. Iowa....before the 3pt line. They went back and estimated what he would have had on the game tape....most likely 13-17 pts more. His only regret was they lost by 1,....104-103.

  • Pete "pistol" maravich is my hero ever since I watched him on YouTube like when YouTube started I've been doing better, and better and better at basketball I started playing basketball when I was about 2-3 years old and I've loved the game ever since that's my hero he is the best to ever play the game

  • Pete Maravich- Showtime before Magic Johnson showed up.

  • Did Austin Carr have a three point line for his 34.6?

  • @timtak1 nope,,,,no 3 pt line, but most of his game was 17 ft and in.

  • Serbian blood :D

  • AMAZING!!

nowadays, ncaa has more games... and a line called... 3 point line.

despite that, his record is untouchable!!!

  • NBA Hall of Fame induction cited him as "perhaps the greatest creative offensive talent in history"..... well, that is something. In a ddition to his LSU - NCAA career average of 44 pts. per game, even before 3pts shot is introduced. (He still holds the Division 1 all-time leading scorer)....

  • Him and his dad remind me of what tiger woods dad did with tiger at an early age. very similar. Its not fair that him and larry bird didnt have a 3 point line.

  • keep in mind pistol pete shot like that BEFORE the 3-point line existed. if it was there he would have had 50+ ppg. Amazing Shooter he is.

  • @rwindows18 Every shot in Pistol Pete's career was documented. It has been determined that if there was a 3 point line back in those days, he would have averaged 13 three pointers per game, and those extra points would have amounted to a career average of 57.2 ppg! Scary.

  • @rwindows18 Every shot in Pistol Pete's career was documented. It has been determined that if there was a 3 point line back in those days, he would have averaged 13 three pointers per game, and those extra points would have amounted to a career average of 57.2 ppg! Scary.

  • Who was 3-10?

  • name of first song ???

  • Number 2???? Larry Bird #1

What a joke. Pistol Pete is #1

  • @MickMich :

I guess they did that to sell more DVDs or someithing...I always thought Pistol Pete was a better shooter myself.

  • Maravich had incredible VALUE (that's how you spell it btw lol). LSU was 3-20 before he got there and they made the NIT (which was a much bigger deal then) before he left. He scored more than ANYONE in college history at 44 p/g. And that was WITHOUT a shot clock. Gimmeabreak.

  • Dude your crazy pistol took long shots NCOs he knew he wound make them and he didn't want to waste energy by running an extra 25 feet.....so yes, lets talk about his long shot!!!!!!!

  • Whoever called Pete anything less than number one ought to be run up the nearest flagpole by his yang-yang.

  • Dude was simply in another universe than everyone else when he had that basketball. TRULY one of a kind.

  • When players pull moves of the past once in a while the crowd goes OOOOOOOOHHH!. Shiet Pete, Cousy, Magic did it all the time.

  • The last words of this video were nicely said.

  • he averaged 44.2 points per game WITHOUT A 3 POINT LINE... thats just unbelievable

  • I would take Pistol Pete over Larry Bird if you're talking about college basketball.

  • @PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I'd take Bird over Pistol without questiion. Bird (and I'm talking about college here) was a better shooter than Pistol, 53% to 44%, was a tremendous passer and a beast on the boards. I think Bird averaged 13 rebounds/game and even in college, made game winning shots and plays. As entertaining as Pistol was, he didn't win. Shocking that his father and coach Press, failed to teach his son the most important lesson-its a team game!

  • I read an article on Stats.com once where they took every one of Pete's games @ LSU and reviewed the tapes. Watched EVERY shot he took in those 3 years and came to the conclusion that he MADE 15 shots per game of more than 21 feet.

They determined his average points per game to be around 12-15 points higher had he had a 3pt line. It was amazing!

  • @Luklex2006 do we have to hear anymore crap about Petes 3 point shots. It was a different game then. They allowed long shots because they were just two points. Maravich shot more then anyone in history, and a time when the rules favoried big scorers. Austin Carr also put up a ton back then.

Maravich had little vlaue to a basketball team. he was an invidual freakshow, but that doesn't make you a great basketball player. Its a 5 on 5 sport.

  • song?

  • if the 3 pointer had ben in effect he would have scored 100 points multiple games

  • @10147924 not really but really close maybe a couple games, his college and nba high were at 68 and 69 and it was recorded that he would have averaged 13 three pointers a game had the line been there so he would have actually averaged 57 points a game.

  • @mxs703 he probly woulda shot more 3's too if there was a line back then. but who knows if that woulda helped or harmed his ppg. i think he woulda averaged 60 with an altered shot selection.

  • uploads two but not all of em.

  • only pistol pete can make chuck norris look bad on the court

  • I love his jump shot :)

  • Anyone notice the 3-point line on the court around 1:04 - 1:07 ?

I guess it must have been the court of an ABA team?

  • WHERE'S LSU'S CHRIS JACKSON? THE BEST SHOOTER IN BASKETBALL EVER! WHY DO THEY HATE SO MUCH ON HIM?

As a freshman at LSU Jackson avg 30pts per game! In his second season avg 28 then went to NBA.

Look at free throw pct: Bird=82%; Pete=77%; Jackson=87% including 91% in his 2nd year!

In his 3rd game at LSU he dropped 48pts! In his 5th game at LSU he torched Univ of Florida for 53pts! He had numerous 50pts 40pts+ outings. Where is CHRIS JACKSON on this list?

#1 BEST SHOOTER EVER= CHRIS JACKSON!

  • @2891ml You are an idiot, Maravich kills Jackson any day. Pete averaged 43.8 ppg his freshman year, 43.8>30. This is without a 3 point line, with one his ppg rises to 57 for his NCAA career. 57>30

  • @2891ml hes not the best shooter ever. Pistol AVERAGED 40+ for a CAREER, yes thats CAREER. No ones even close and Jackson worse shooter than Bird and as far as just shooting JJ Redick and Reggie Miller beat him as well.

  • You can really tell a lot about someone's basketball IQ by asking them what they know about Pete Maravich.

  • Been looking at the comments and Bird is the best shooter because he shot 53% to Pete's 44% in college. Look at the free throw % Bird =82% to Pete's 77%. Pete is without question the NCAA greatest scorer, but this is about the greatest shooter. I have to ask - where is J.J.Reddick?

  • @mrho4speed

2 things Bird shot a better % but, he didn't score as much. The more you score the more you % is ganna drop that is always the case. Not saying Bird isn't the best pure shooter. You also have to remember though Pete also shot from longer range. Bird wasn't even that good a 3 point shooter until like 3 or 4 years in his nba career.

  • @taxidriver2929 are you talking about the guy that won the three first 3-point shootouts in NBA history?

  • @taxidriver2929 The title of the show was "greatest shooters" not scorers. Pete is without question the greatest scorer but accuracy is important. Not Bird's fault Pete shot from farther out and missed more shots. Pete's NBA stat of 67% of "3"s is misleading-only in his last year (43 games) he took 15 shots and made 10. No way he would have maintained this %. JJ Reddick shot 43.2% and 91.1% free throws. Bird always had great range, I'm convinced he was a better shooter than Pete and so was espn

  • I want to see Pistol Pete vs. Larry Bird. You might have the highest scoring game in history lol.

  • man, his dad musta been proud!

  • He had a very serious heart problem, and still was called "Pistol".

He probably is the reason we have a three point line today.

  • sweet set shot at .20

  • How bout this. What if they had a Three point Line back then?!?!

  • @tap0ut22 They calculated that: it's just 54 points PER GAME.

  • @bhouri 57

  • look at those long and thin hands and fingers... boy it's the perfect back spin machine

  • Most entertaining player ever, great passer and shooter ... but his teams didn't win. LSU never played in the NCAA tournament and his pro teams never advanced far in the playoffs. He overlapped one season with Bird in Boston, then quit. If he played one more season he would have been on a championship team -- presuming he didn't screw it up somehow.

  • ummm gunner petes known as one of the best passers shooters not nessiserly play maker but hes passes are remembered and of course a scorer as well.

  • OK so this is just an ESPN show that said they think Pistol was 2 and Bird 1. However let me add Pistol scored 3600 in 3 years of play in 83 games total and Bird only scored 2800 pts in 3 years and 94 games. So how do they gather Bird was the #1 shooter. Theres no comparison 800 more points in 10 or 11 less games. Theres no comparison Pistol is #1. Also there are 2 all time scoreres from DIV 2 that scored more the Pistol however they took 4 years to do so.

  • yes the best passer in the history of basketball never passed. Brilliant.

  • @tfonz71

But Pistol took so many more shots than Bird.

They probably are taking NBA history into it too but i wud still have Larry No.1

  • @theycallmedubey Bird was never the ball handler that Maravich was. Nor was he nearly as mobile.

  • @Vamoalla THis is about SHOOTERS in NCAA. I never said anything about ball handle or mobility. Larry was a far greater shooter than any other player probably in NCAA and NBA history

  • @theycallmedubey True. Redick shouldve made the list. Plain and simple.

  • Oh my gos! the Pistol...simply amazing... I think the basketball of today would be different if pistol pete not played the game...

    Pistol!!!!!!

  • Who does the song at the beginning of this clip? Great song to start out the Pistol.

  • Outlaw - The Lordz feat. Tim Armstrong

  • Hands down the greatest playet ever. Like the video said there will NEVER be another playet like pistol pete.

  • genius

  • For everyone who is asking about the 3 point line. The exact statistic is 57.0 ppg. He would have been averaging 57 freaking points a game.

  • Not to mention if he knew there was a 3 point line he would have been taking more threes.

  • He did that without a 3 point line aswel they say he would of averaged over 50ppg if they included 3s

  • The pistol is the best pure shooter ever, hands down. I love Bird and he's of the same mold & a better all around player, but there has never been now nor will there ever be a better shooter. Pete played 3 years because back then freshman couldn't play & still has the most points scored in a career and thats without benefit of 3 point line & 10 games more played these days. Every game he played in the sole purpose of the team was to stop him & he still averaged 44 a game, enough said!

  • The only thing you got to note however, is the caliber of knuckleheads he was going against.

  • @dylancaprotti Perfectly said. That's what separates people like Jordan and Kobe from the rest of these old school scoring machines. Defense.

  • if mj is the jesus of basketball then pistol pete would have to be god

  • pete made the game what it is today there will never be another pete maravich 44 a game imagine if he had the 3 point line 50 a game ???

  • I think it was about 53 or 54 ppg if he would have the 3pt line

  • 46 ppg? Talk about carry a team.

  • imagin the 3 point line at that time

  • Pete was a lethal weapon on the court. He was strong in every aspect of the game.

  • i think the pistol could've compete with jordan anyday

  • he should be number 1

  • it was like allen iverson 20 years before...

  • this guy can really shoot. he's even got a bit of hang time!

  • Weird looking shot? Pretty much the definition of a fundamental shot...

  • wish I could of seen him play..just missed it..dang it!!..hard to say if he or Bird are #1

  • Amazing! Wish he was playing today!

    He'll make you look foolish!

  • i agree with you 100%

  • rubio cant shoot!!!

  • @gobble2000 You got a good point there!

  • @gobble2000 but he's HANDSOME. ;D

  • Nothing like Pete. No where near the shooter or scorer. Hair and flashy play is not enough to compare him to Maravich. Not even close.

  • its amazing that he averaged 44.2 ppg and took 40+ shots a game and still had a lead the team in assists

  • I agree

  • @blackeyejim not only that; had he playedin today´s era he would´ve averagedalmost 57 points per game taking into account his shot chart and the three point line implemented long after he left college!!!!

  • @blackeyejim Ya, crazy. Imagine his numbers if they had the 3 point line for whole career.

  • @blackeyejim

not to mention that he never had the luxury of a 3-point line either

  • @blackeyejim Wow!!!

  • Comment removed

  • larry bird #1? i beg to differ,petes #1

  • yea totally agree i know for his size at that period of time a big man with a jumpshot was absurd but still 44 points a game with no three point line it surprising he wasnt number one

  • R.I.P

  • he was great in the nba too though, and thats no reason to dicredit him- he could only beat whats in front of him

  • Larry Bird being ranked #1 is complete bullshit.

  • And who is your No.1?

  • Pistol Pete...

  • wheres the rest of the top 10

  • larry is considered #1

  • Pistol Pete is a legend, a true legend!

It is too bad that his Serbian "wild and crazy" gene took over the control of his life.

Will be missed forever. Love you man!

  • Pistol is one of my all time favorite players, one thing that i find interesting though is that he is such a good ball handler, but he dribbles with his head down

  • It is said that when he dribbles his heads down but his eyes are looking up... i read that somewhere i forgot where though

  • WE LOVE YOU PISTOL!

  • Pistol wa the best. What was the name of the first song and who is the artist?

    Thanks

  • The first song is called "Outlaw" by The Lords featuring Tim Armstrong

  • Pistol Pete is the best college shooter of all time, not Bird! Why he is number two on this list is atrocious.

  • I love this guy. I just dont understand what happened. Why didnt this translate to the NBA. Did he lose his drive? I mean Bird, Magic, Jordan they were good college players but when they hit the NBA they exploded.

  • You have got to be kidding me. Pistol didnt do well in the nba? wow.

  • He averaged 24.2 PPG and 5.4 Assist...How is that not good?

  • He just never played on a good team in the NBA. He also struggled with an alchol addiction.

  • Serious knee injury, that and he had a heart defect that limited his energy for the 82 game grind. Despite that Pistol was still one of the greatest ever. Imagine if he hadn't had those physical setbacks.....

  • Pistol Pete had the most uncanny ability to score of any player in the history of the NBA...period

  • did he play in the NBA?

  • Yeah he played for the Jazz

  • drafted by the Hawks, traded to the Jazz and finished his last year in Boston

  • Larry should been second, but both are dang good!!!

  • #1 hands down.......sorry Larry....the Pistol was the greatest college basketball player

  • i agree, best collage player ever, i rank him second best ever

  • With today's rule and the 3 point line, pistol pete would be averaging 57pts/per game.

  • gotta love pete... haters are just jelous =p and if your a hater probably give me a thumbs down...

  • Pete #2 no no no. Larry Bird was great, probably the greatest white guy to play in the NBA but in the NCAA nobody came close to Pete in terms of shooting or scoring.

  • The best ever!

  • Pete probably got so much pussy at LSU.

  • yeah bro, fked playa

  • Comment removed

  • if lsu star chris jackson isnt on this list, this list is invalid. he was one of the best college shooters of all time hands down!!!

  • What is the first song?

  • He would have averaged 60 instead of 44 if he had that short 3 point line back then.

  • I respect Larry Bird, but if this is a list of top ten NCAA Shooters, then Pistol Pete must be rated number 1. It's not even close.

  • I agree with you man... agree. Yeah no disrespect to Larry Bird, but he's in the very, very far second , behind from Pete Maravich. I think even with a Dad for a coach... for Bird. Bird's a great shooter.. but he couldn't run as fast, dribble like crazy, which makes Pete very special because he can take shots anytime he likes... no matter what distance, what position... I think Bird can do it but not as much as Pete... Watch the videos... and it's so obvious. Pete should be number 1 in College.

  • at 1:22 did pistol pete aim with his index finger when he was shooting

  • That wasn't Pete that was his dad and he was saying when you shoot you shoot with one finger because it rolls of to the index finger

  • imagine if there was a three-point line in his college days.

how many more points would he have had?

that just shows how dynamic of a shooter he was.

  • According to Dale Brown, he would have averaged 13 3s per game assuming the line was 19'9" like it used to be.

  • Amazing... If so, He could have averaged 55 to 57 points per game!!!!! Should be number 1... not 2...

  • with the 3 point line he would have averaged 57 ppg

  • he was a pure shooter

  • Look at 0:20....he was burying shots from just inside half court. Not even Jordan could do that, he was INCREDIBLE.

Unfortunately his rebounding and defense was far inferior to his offense, but he's still one of the top 5 greatest college players ever,

  • despite how amazing a ball player he was, his life was so messed up, until he retired and and became religous, he was never truly at peace, he was grown up to care only of basketball, and that really messed him up, as a human, but it made him amazing as a player

  • In my opinion, Pete Maravich could play in today´s NBA.

Granted, he would have trouble defending guys

like Kobe, Dwayne Wade, Allen Iverson.

But, Pete could do alot of things with the

ball, especially shoot it, he was a pure shooter and he knew how to get a shot off

    and a great passer.

So yes, I believe he would have been successful in today´s NBA.

  • He would be like Nash or CP3

  • he would be a hell of a lot better then nash or CP3

  • Nash+Paul=Maravich

  • Pete is WAY more improvisatory than Nash or CP3 and a better scorer than either of them. His game would fit so well into today's game, and even today he would be considered ahead of his time. THAT'S how good he was.

  • PISTOL > Nash + CP3

  • Fortunate son - Credence Clearwater Revival.

  • Walnut, yes that treatment was shameful, but don't compare it to what black athletes had to go thru...Pete was treated that way because he was making 3 times what his teammates were, the fact that he was white helped him earn that premium. So his teammates were jealous, but Pete never had to eat from kitchens or stay at flop houses that would not admit him due to skin color.

  • Interesting how the last guy compared Pistol to Mozart. Mozart is a great comparison. Both of them were prolific, both were nearly peerless and both of them died young. Also Pete began a rebirth before he passed on, as Mozart enjoyed a resurgence to his career before his demise.

  • The way some of the African-American players treated him during his first couple of years was disgraceful...I was at a Celtic game in the earky 70's against the Hawks and players like Paine for Atlanta were referring to him as"BOY". Would of been different if he were a black player. He just wante to be well liked and they treated him like shit.Would have been a different story if he were black, right?

  • Some of it was racial. But a lot of it was that Pete was like Allan Iverson - he needed to have the whole offense revolve around him - even when Pete was passing - it was passing to make Pete the star. The rap against Pete was that he wasn't a team player and never won.

There were other talented White players that did manage to earn the respect of all Black teammates. Rick Barry being the most noted. Barry led the warriors in steals, scoring, of course free throws, assists. They won.

  • I was a big Pistol fan..BIG.Folks back in the day thought he was nothing but a gun...but he was the only real player of talent LSU had.He was a great passer in the pros putting up big numbers in assists. He played a couple of games with DrJ with the hawks during the pre season and it was common knowledge they would have been a great team

  • Yeah he had a 44% FG average during his NBA career but, THAT IS COUNTING 3 POINT SHOTS THAT THEY DIDN'T EVEN HAVE THEN! and plus it's not like his teammates could score either.

  • Pete is my favorite player!!!
