What a movie! Alcoholism treated with an understanding rarely seen in films. The 1-2 punch of Klugman and Lemmon. And Lee Remick showing that nice people can be tragic alcoholics, too. This might be Billy Wilder's most important film from a very distinguished body of work.
I saw this brilliant drama when it was released and can only say Kudos to
Jack Warner who took on the project even while it seemed commercially troubling, and of course to Blake Edwards, Lee Remick and to Jack Lemmon who with Mr. Roberts, Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, and Days Of Wine and Roses reached the pinnacle of super-stardom early and stayed there until Lemmon died. A truly great star.
In a Radio broadcasting interview, Holiday, asked about which kind of music she'd have brought with her on a desert island, answered: "Something pretty by Nat, something by Satchmo and something by Perry Como".
this song reminds me when i was a little girl and one of my parents drank it was so hard to watch what they did to theirselves over and over again i had to take care of them they were such a different person when they drank, very abusive, i thank god that even thow it was much later in life that parent found god and we made peace with the past i always loved them, always !!!!
@chopitshop I am so glad you are better, I know about abuse, my sister has been abusing drugs for thirty years now, this has affected all three of my niec and nephews, My niece is an uncaring mother who gave her son to his father, my oldest nephew is fifteen and he has cut himself numerous times and tries to starve himself, she used to be like this, and my seven year old nephew is insecure and nervous
@Sheri451 thank you for your kindness hope you and your family enjoy the holidays, yes i am better but unfornately even when we forgive the heart does not always alow us to forget, god bless you and your family
id heard this song long before my drinking sarted but had never seen the movie.thankfully over 10 years now ive quit the booze and seen the movie.a beautiful song with such a sobering message i humm this everyday especially the tough ones and remember what will happen.
Great song, wonderful slide show. Put a lump my throat remembering all those great movies. It almost feels like I lived through all of that over the years. Thanks for putting this together.
Oh, people always tell me how depressing the movie is ..."The days of wine and roses". And I tell them:"Then Black Edwards did his job superbly". From the opening credits to the realism of the story, it certainly ranks as one of my favorite movies of all time. Lee Remick is superb as well as jack. may they both R.I.P. Ty for the lovely post!
Jack Lemmon was and always will be one of my top - of - my - list favorite classic actors. I miss Jack so much and Days of Wine and Roses is one of my favorite movies of his along with Some Like it Hot. RIP Jack, I'll always love you.
Jack worked with all the beauties of his era- Marilyn Monroe, Doris Day, Judy Holliday, Shirley MacLaine, Lee Remick, Virna Lisi- the list goes on and on. He was a natural as an actor- it seemed effortless. I loved his saying as he stepped on the set to begin filming- "I't magic time!" Such talent and class. Never to be repeated. RIP dear Jack.
A beautiful tribute to a wonderful man and a great actor! Jack was I think very underrated- his body of work was incredible! From serious drama to slapstick comedy, he excelled it all of it! And everyone just loved working with him- a giving, kind man. Rest in peace, dear man- ya did good!

Thanks for this wonderful video with Perry Como, a legendary performer, also. I miss em all, and Lee Remick, too.

What a great time. No Fax machines, cell phones, text messaging, shitty high priced satellite TV with nothing on. People were closer in many ways back then.
I long for those times but those times are long gone.
I'm afraid they are, too. We are 'technologizing' ourselves out of feeling, human involvement, and true relating to one another. We paid a price for our 'sophistication' didn't we? I long too. But I have memories and they will have to do, because the days of lip rings, pierced tongues, and punk are here to replace that graceful, elegant, beautiful time of some years ago. It's truly sad.
Jack Lemon's perfomance in The Days of Wine and Roses was an enlightening experience. If you have neverr seen the film you are in for quite an experience. The only advice I would give would be to see some of his comedic performances before watching this movie.
great oldy? what does that mean? what "great" things supercede? radiohead? tupac? it's great, period. como brings mercer's melancholy to the forefront. this is no wedding song. it's not simple. "oldy" is a put-down. this is far more complex than anyone even has the imagination for, let alone the talent, nowadays.

EasternMerchant :yes it's possible because I lived it,hmmm what happened, people started wearing jeans on the airplane and didn't get dressed up to go downtown and it went to shit after that lol. But then Twiggy , Petula Clarke and Volkswagen vans happened and my world got better again !!!
People today pay so much for gloomy hoody clothing just to look the same. Tall ugly buildings are everywhere because architects no longer feel any guilt for putting up these tall ugly things anymore.
It is sad that people no longer have dreams to look up to. Dreams to look better, do better and live better. We only look for pleasure for the moment. We need examples and stars, not absolute equality. Cheap abundance versus rare luxury?
@EasternMerchant I am the same way, I was born in 63 and my Mom and dad had the radio on all the time. I loved the music from their era and my grandparents era in the 1940s. Back then, people would dress up and go to eat out, or go to church, or go shopping, or to a movie, dressed to "the nines" Now, people dress sloppily they even go to church in pants and jeans, women actually put a dress on to go to church, before 2000, now they wear pants. My fathers daily atire are baggy shorts holey shirt.
@mysweetlizzie Thank the hippies and the liberals for the ruin of America and class. Also, thank the third world immigrants for not assimilating and not wanting to be classy, but want to make the US a hellhole like their countries. All this contributed to the demise of the classy american culture of the 50s and 60s.
@calihartley2010 Some people might not like what you're saying; but it's true. The 50's were probably the high point of America, yet the ignorant left sought to destroy it. We're all paying the price today for their stupidity as we live in the dumbed down culture that they created. This video provides a perfect example; Perry Como and Henry Mancini were Italian immigrants who probably faced discrimination yet rose above it and contributed something great to America.
@EchoCannon89 Yes you are right. I do not care if others like it or not. I know that I am right and sometimes the truth hurts. I wish the US goes back to those days of good manners, and great music like this. Many ethnic groups faced discrimination, but they all took that in their stride and wanted to be american and give back to America. Not like the third world trash who are ungrateful and demand stuff that they are not entitled to. Especially when you have the democrats and Obama helping them
@calihartley2010 About those 3rd World trash, native Americans have got to stand up to their attempts to pollute your American culture and traditions in the name of this Admendment or that.. Tell your Congressman not to suck up to their demands in return for their votes. And to hell with the absurd political correctness thingy.
@achahei Hear hear. I wish I could have a drink with you. Thank God that you are one of the few people on youtube that have some common sense. Yes and please do not forget that you also need to educate your kids and grandkids to be classy and not follow the culture of death and ghettoness that is being potrayed as the cool thing to do. To be honest, when you said Native Americans, I thought you meant the native Indians. That threw me off for a moment LOL.
@EasternMerchant Believe it or not but it's the natural human progress, or regress, as God predicted in the Bible. It'll actually get worse, much worse, as you may already be seeing around you in the world, before it all ends. Our days are numbered, which is why the wise seek Him and His counsel. God desires obedience and wants the best for us, though we in our sinful nature think we know better and choose our own path, one that leads to destruction. Our hope is thus in God alone. Be blessed! †
@EasternMerchant Yeah i too feel I was born in the wrong era. The world seems so bad inspite of the advances in technology Like I said below blame all this on liberals, hippies and third world immigrants.
Oh how my mother loves this song! I used to have to take a nap to this song when I was little. I always think of her sweetness when I hear this great song. Thanks for posting.
I give thanx to my daddy, Samuel A. Chase for teaching me to appreciate great music like this.I am proud that I grew up in the era of great music, the fifties & sixties. "It was the best of times;it was the worst of times."Now I am a grandfather trying to pass on to my grandchildren this legacy of music appreciation. The sixties were truely "The Days Of Wine & Roses".Thax Dad, Rest Eternal.
@swt32567 You were so lucky. I developed a love for the music by listening to it on the radio. In Birmingham, there was only one station that played it. I miss "Hubbard's Cupboard".
A great tribute to Jack Lemmon and all of his great body of work. We miss you Jack we really do. You and Walter were truely "The Odd Couple". Thanx for all the smiles over the years. Vaya Con Dios Amigo.
Fabulous tribute, Charlie. Charliesou Productions goes from strength to strength. Jack was never greater, for me, than as Shelley in Glengarry Glen Ross.
I always loved Jack Lemmon he was always able to inject a human sincerity to his characters. Very missed!

I'm really not a great JACK LEMMON fan, he never did do a film
with my AVA GARDNER !! But out of all his films, THE DAYS OF
WINE & ROSES is my absolute favorite - no one else could have
done a better part with that film.....heavy subject matter and
heartbreaking to those of us who love someone with alcohol issues.
THANK YOU for this great vid.......wonderful music, photos & memories !!

Oh how my mother loves this song! I used to have to take a nap to this song when I was little. I always think of her sweetness when I hear this great song. Thanks for posting.

Beautiful, considering the bittersweet that was not only this song, but the movie...

Fabulous tribute, Charlie. Charliesou Productions goes from strength to strength. Jack was never greater, for me, than as Shelley in Glengarry Glen Ross.
