@leviathonCage well, this is the very early period of magma :) you should listen to the Kohntarkosz LP, the MDK (Mekhanik Destruktiv Kommandoh) one, the "live"... also Wurdah Itah of course ! all published in the 70s.. but most of them are still played, you have as much version of a song as it was played !
Say if Stravinsky and Zappa had a huge picnic and created a mixture of Avant-Garde madness mixed with John Coltrane's jazzy mad scientist-like composition, It would be Magma. Magma, love 'em or hate 'em, they are Zeuhl Prog to the core in a psychotic way, Christian Vander is like Frankenstein on the drums as the band come up with some twisted time changes in the music. No wonder Snooker player Steve Davis and Johnny Rotten loved these guys.
Christian Vander's screeching circa 3:30 sounds just like the kind of altissimo skronking that some free-jazz tenor sax players (most notably Vander's hero Coltrane) often make. If someone wonders what the hell was Vander trying to do with that screaming and ranting, then at the very least it sounds like an homage to Coltrane (of "Ascension" persuasion at least). It's remarkable how similar the human voice and the timbre of sax can sound.
tell mue stupid. I listend to many things and part of that is some Zheul stuff but i never got it with Magma... music is a side thing. they focus on the lyrics and some speaking (Vander's squicky voice is so annoying...)there is lack of cohesive music arrangements. all for that (stupid in my opinion Kobaia language..)
@camelspottergr: I reckon the best thing on this video is Klaus Blasquiz's vocal tricks. I like Magma in general- but not this era as much- and I can definitely sympathise with anyone who finds it annoying. Udu Wudu is a lot better- for my vote.
@mtopper66 do i sense confusion? the story of the albums makes it all clear what is being displayed, the clash of civilizations between the different planets and space travellers. the insanity is built into the characters and the figures on stage channel it perfectly.
Cool clip! Magma's always been a fascinating group. This medley seems to have some influences from Arnold Schoenberg ("Pierrot Lunaire"), Igor Stravinsky ("The Wedding" and "The Rite of Spring"), Bela Bartok, and John Coltrane ("Ascension" and his other avant garde works).
Francois Cahen always looks jolly when playing the piano. Check out his material from ZAO too! He played a great piano with another former Magma member, Yockho Seffer
When I search for Zao (on youtube) all I can find is a metal band of the same name. I guess there aren't any clips on youtube, I'll keep an eye out though.
magma in 1970 seemed alot more arranged and schizy........plus they had horns.......by the mid 70s , i notice, they got more into electronice keys......the early stuff uses piano
I love everything about about this video. I only have MDK and Udu Wudu... what album is most of this material on? It's several songs isn't it? Or is it just cut up weird.
Magma is amazing, I understand people considering them... "weird." But it's sad that weird is viewed as such a negative thing by music listeners. God forbid someone try to do something different. I think people are missing out not taking this music a little more seriously.
True, people are free to like the music or not. But I'm not sure at all how Magma could be considered pseudo intellectual. They are creative artists who are following their own muse, like it or not.
It's three pieces - 0:00-3:28 is the end of "Auraë", 3:28-7:05 is a shortened version of "Stoah", and the rest is the beginning of "Müh"; they are all on the first album.
Christian Vander stated that it was difficult to work with the horn section. He basically wants the band to work as one unit and it's difficult to find brass players that can work this way. As if all of them tend to solo too much. In fact, one of the sax players (not in this video though), Jeff Seffer quit because he wanted to do more improv, but CV was interested in through-composed music. The similar reason (horn players want to play solos) was why Zappa gave up horns after 1976.
zappa used horns plenty after 1976, and he almost always had parts in his compositions that left room for improv and solos, he only scaled his band back dramatically in the late 70s for a little while because of the difficulty of dealing with, and being the employer of, so many people.... at least, from what I've read
I've read a lot about Zappa too. In one 1980 interview he specifically stated that he used the synth brass sound because he thought it was too much of a hassle to organize a band with brass players who wanted to play solos more than charts. Yes, he gave keyboardists and others a space for solos but he mostly demanded them to play the parts. Besides, the his late70s-early80s bands were just as big (8-9 musicians) as his earlier bands that also had the horns. He just had more guitars and keys.
That's him, alright. He left in 1971, leaving Magma guitar-less until another guitarist named Claude, Claude Olmos came in 1973 just in time for the Mekanik Destrüktiw Kommandoh sessions.
wow...this has to be the WEIRDEST band I have ever heard! And listening to Soft Machine, Frank Zappa, Gong, etc, that saying a lot! I dont really care much for the vocals, in whatever languagethey made up. I love the big band sound, though. I wish more rock groups had wind sections...
The thing with Magma, is that the vocals and linguistics, actually more or less complements the music greatly. The thing is, the way Christian Vander created the Kobian language set, was less for the intelligible communication, but more for the musical audities, and using the voices instrumental qualities instead. Notice that Klaus blasquiz and Christian and Stella Vander do alot of jazz scatting to "jam" with other instruments.
If you love Acid Jazz, experimental music. Magma is a good start!
It does sound jazzy at a lot of times. And this is total acid music. I would just see one taking the exact opposite journey and ending up with these guys, as it has been for me. This is certainly the epitomy of acid music, along with much of the Ozric Tentacles' works.
No, he didn't. However, complex music is totally acid music. Yes weren't huge acid heads, but their music is wonderful on an acid trip due to its complexity. It'd be hard to make something like this as a regular acid user.
To whoever said that Magma played "acid music", sorry to disappoint you but i'm afraid it's impossible to be stoned and play such a demanding music at the same time!!
BDark 41 is an ignorant piece of shit. this band as well as all of the other bands previous and following Magma paved the way to the shit thats on the radio now. Christian Vander has a beautiful voice worthy of recognition. it is completely close minded not to recognize the fact that these bands contributed to music in such a way to alter it. your entitled to your opinion but your also obligated to know what your talking about
mmm about the ignorant think...I study music in the best university of my country so i'm not that ignorant as you say
andabout the magma band....it have a lot of instruments but it just dont compplement each other and dont make a point...like the screams of th drummer...ihe can say the same thing without yeling it like a crazy bitch
well its sad that your studying music at such a prestigious school of music and you are this close minded. study harder please, for all of us. the layers within the music is what gives it its beauty. and let me ask you something, can you scream like that and keep a note? im not thinking so
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Man I think I lost like the half of my neurons after look at this piece of junk. Sorry about the comment but after look at the minute 3:30 my feelings about the music of the 70's has just become useless.
And one more thing, my cousin likes this band, he is a total asshole.

How does one start with Magma and get to Acid Jazz? Is that the end of the progressive journey!!??
OneBigRetard 3 years ago
It does sound jazzy at a lot of times. And this is total acid music. I would just see one taking the exact opposite journey and ending up with these guys, as it has been for me. This is certainly the epitomy of acid music, along with much of the Ozric Tentacles' works.

Acid? Have you heard of Carl Orff? Did he use acid in your opinion?
Sunchild333 3 years ago 2
No, he didn't. However, complex music is totally acid music. Yes weren't huge acid heads, but their music is wonderful on an acid trip due to its complexity. It'd be hard to make something like this as a regular acid user.

To whoever said that Magma played "acid music", sorry to disappoint you but i'm afraid it's impossible to be stoned and play such a demanding music at the same time!!
styx49 3 years ago 6
i never said it's music played on acid, i know damn well you couldn't play this on acid... but it would be trippy as fuck on acid

BDark41 3 years ago
well its sad that your studying music at such a prestigious school of music and you are this close minded. study harder please, for all of us. the layers within the music is what gives it its beauty. and let me ask you something, can you scream like that and keep a note? im not thinking so

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Man I think I lost like the half of my neurons after look at this piece of junk. Sorry about the comment but after look at the minute 3:30 my feelings about the music of the 70's has just become useless.
And one more thing, my cousin likes this band, he is a total asshole.

The Wedding by Igor Stravinsky is a highly recommended piece to listen in the background of this area. Enjoy!

Awesome. I never noticed that Magma has a bit of the Canterbury Sound...
