I like the hanging sheet idea, but I think these days it would be easier to do this with digital effects than it would be to hang a sheet. It reminds me of transparent layer in Photoshop.
Live, TMBG's used to hold up these very long/tall sticks with simple puppet heads on the top, connected to a string, to mouth the bop-ba-dop-ba-ba-ba-dup-bup's, and it was hilarious to watch.
