@grim0033 Hmm but the F-15 is not designed to operate off a carrier so is limited to its own bases. Does the Navy still have F-14's? The Phoenix AAM's of the Tomcat outrange that of any fighter today.
@AccordGTR No you're right, the F-15 is not a carrier able aircraft. However, I was responding to the comment that said "Until the F22 and F35 came along the F18 was the best". As far as I'm aware the 22 isn't a carrier able platform either. Thus, I took the comment to include all aircraft in the US arsenal. Personally, I'd suggest the F15 and 16 are much better aircraft than the 18. The F-18 is the runt of the litter (lowest speed, acceleration, service ceiling, range etc...)
@grim0033 Hmm I dunno about that but the F-15 and F-16 are older platforms than the Super Hornet. I do know that success in a dogfight does not only apply on performance specs but a lot of it depends on pilot skill, superior avionics, tactics, AWACS and CCI support, weapons systems and other factors. Computers fly the Super Hornet more than the pilot but dogfight skills are still important. In this regard, maybe the Super Hornet is the right plane for the job as far as the USN is concerned?
@AccordGTR Actually, it was budget cuts that led to the super hornet being reconsidered by the navy. They had plans for a stealth aircraft but couldn't afford it. They had thrown the plans for the SH in the bin, but had to dust em off when they were left financially short. End of the day - the F15/16 have higher key performance indicators across the board. As I said the F15 outperforms the 18. I mentioned nothing about pilot skill - why would the USN have better pilots anyway?
@AccordGTR I never at any point said the SH was a bad aircraft. But it is certainly NOT the best aircraft in the U.S arsenal by a long way (even pre raptor/35). The super hornet would get owned big time by the modern russian aircraft. That's a fact. The SH doesn't fly high enough, far enough, fast enough, has a wider turning radius, lower climb rate, poorer acceleration, lower range radar which denies first look/shoot opertunity and has poorer weapons.
@grim0033 The APG-79 is better than any radar fielded by current Russian aircraft. Fact. The finest Russian built A/A fighter in its most advanced variant (production, not projected) has a radar cross section much bigger and does not have AESA. SH has first look. First shoot? That depends on a number of factors, but but its not clear cut. Probably the Su. Dogfight? SH handles better low speed. No its not the best AA jet (worse than the SU), but its a very good MULTIROLE jet for the price.
not enough thrust though, better radar than f15c and f16c, but just not enough thrust, which is odd since youd think the navy would want their fighters to climb to altitude even faster than the airforce
Rear flaps where out of sync.

i agree with TopGunPilot01. the f-18 was the best until the f-22 and f-35 came around.

I think you will find that the F15 way out performs the F18.

Both U.S and Australian experts 'shoot' the poor performance of the super hornet clear out of the sky.
It's actually a very interesting documentary though.
