I happen to know the driver of the car. Unfortunately a broken arm wasn't all that he came out with. For a while he suffered memory loss and couldnt remember he son, wife or daughter. He made a full recovery and still races in Caterhams today.
The driver in the red Cateredham saw what was happening to the other Cannedham in his rearview and decided to do a "No Hands Rolling 360" to document the action with his hand held Sony Handicam( for later posting on Youtube).
The first part of the footage looks like the scene from a movie! Second part makes you worry for the driver. It's just good to read how little his injuries were!
Having just bought a Caterham I did wonder just how tough they are? Now I know!
I saw this exact crash on a programme called "destroyed in seconds"and I heard the announcer say that no one was hurt, and it sounded like Jeremy Clarkson. Is this correct?
Roll cages obviously do a good job of protection in terms of providing an impenetrable area. However, they do not transfer the energy from the crash too well, as they have very little give in them and so much of the energy is transferred from the impact to the squidgy organic bit behind the wheel rather than "sharing" this energy throughout the available materials within the projectile (Vehilcle)....
..... I would say that the tyrewall is what saved the driver from much more serious injurires as opossed to the cage. Hence thats's why they are there of course.
give me a roll cage over crumple zones any day. even if the whole car is solid steel with hardly any give at all, id much rather the massive jolt and intense g forces than being being crushed between warped metal and plastic and go knows what else. crumple zones work to a point, then when there's no more room to crumple, your fucked.
ljx925, you got that right! plus I think it would look killer!
Damn, that driver was lucky as hell to hit the tire wall that way. Of all the ways he could have hit it I think that way was the best and most distributing along the car. Damn lucky!
It was a violent initiation but the landing I think is what saved him. I bet he had a headache B.C couldn't fix! But he's alive!
I was there and saw this crash !! We all thought he was dead but after a stay in the local hospital the driver was back the next day to spectate !! I took a photo the moment it hit the tyre wall which is amazing, you can see the spectators turning and running as it looked like the car was going into the crowd. They put safety fencing up on Quarry corner now to stop that happening.
If I ever were to build a lotus replica, the first thing would be to get a full rollcage. Not so much for trackdays as for everyday traffic. These little cars looks funny as hell but I always shiwer at the thought of having my unprotected shoulder in the level of everyone elses bumper. It would only take for someone to miss a red light and enter a crossing at bicyclespeed to crush you like a worm. Auch!
god damn thoughs little things hold together like steel man that was insain... i want a caterham so bad and now that i know they hold together idont have to worry bout it snappen in half lol
at the speed he was flipping, you CAN'T keep them on the wheel.. he should have had arm restraints and a HANS for this. Open wheel cars flip. WEar the gear !!
LOL

I remember seeing this crash, was crazy cause i was on the corner where he crashed

The wheel arcs on the caterham's are so misleading...they make people think these are closed wheels but the arcs are just good as mud guards.
Touching wheels at club racing is bad. Touching wheels at club racing with a caterham is just suicidal

Shit! Big crash. I'm glad that guy was ok...I think they have loads of wire mesh up on that corner now, perhaps it was because of this crash
