  • I think the biggest difference between the two is the size of their mouths.

  • Wow, Kerry Ellis just wipes the floor with Idina Menzel here.

  • its amazing how different they can be and they've played the same role in Wicked... astonishing. Ellis sounds much more mature than Menzel in this one.

  • I am saddened this is auto-tuned. 0:48-0:52 gives it away.

  • @markus1357 Ok... so Ive watched this video a few times now and I have no idea how you can say that its auto-tuned, especially where you point out a time frame on the video... nothing there makes it obvious or even points to auto-tuning.

  • @markus1357 Also... these two women are two of the greatest musical theatre performers of the last 20 years... there is no need what-so-ever to use auto-tune on them.

  • @DJCaws I do not doubt they are excellent singers, but you can argue that provides the pressure to auto-tune and be perfect in live performance. You can hear other areas which give auto-tune away. The robotic, warbling effect can be heard with the word "lasts" at 0:24 as the software struggles to re-correct the pitch of quite a low note.

  • CHILLS! Chills.

  • After the amazing energy of Idina it would appear Kerry Ellis is on valium. Wake up dear!

  • kerry > idina

    end of story

  • I can't get over this being LIVE.

  • I hate the english lyrics, Björn and Benny sucks at translations.. ^^ But Ellis and Menzel together in one of my favorite musical songs...MY GOD! :D THANK YOU SO MUCH! :D

  • @cajsalindahl Actually, the English lyrics are by Tim Rice.

  • @Thundril Ah! Thank you for the info! :) Though, still like the swedish one better. but not in "kristina från duvemåla". "you have to be there" with Ellis is much better than "du måste finnas". :P

  • kerry ellis has such a beautiful voice!

  • outstanding.

  • my feelings exactly.

    just beautiful </3

  • Idina Menzel <3 I've never really heard much from Kerry Ellis, but she's rocking it here.

I love this song. It's amazing!

  • Love them both!

  • The only two Elphabas who've Managed to play in Wicked on the West End and on broadway!!

  • AY LAS AMO

  • @Walt1896IsTrollKing The voice of the OVERRATED Sutton Foster is as squeaky as Idina's and her version of "Someone else's story" isn't impressive at all (no wonder people trashed Sutton's "Someone else's story" video, lol!)...

  • im a huge fan of idina.. but she should not bob her head like that....

  • Fantastic rendition of this song. Though I never thought I would say it but Kerry Ellis absolutely wipes the floor with Idina Menzel. Menzel is one of my favourite performers but she just seems a little nasal in this. However, it is a beautiful song and they do a fantastic version of it, they sound great when singing together, their voices blend really well.

  • 3 people are mad that they can't sing.

  • JOSH GROBAN!

  • What's beautiful about this song- is that it doesn't require ridiculously high chest notes to be loved. It's lyrically wonderful and whether it be Idina and Kerry or Elaine and Barbara it strikes a chord because of its raw emotion.

  • kerry Ellis wipes the floor with Idina. isn't she always slightly ahead of the orchestra?

  • anyone else love the way kerry sings "now at least i know i know him well" at 2:39 :D

  • I've heard a few of these performances and in my opinion Idina doesn't sound auto-tuned, but almost like she has a lisp. It sounds like she's singing with a retainer in. This is the only performance where she sounds like this. Maybe she had an injury or some other circumstance that required a retainer. And she rushes a lot throughout the entire concert, but otherwise it's still beautiful.

  • @rikalovesdie Now you mentioned I can really hear it.

  • If they are going to auto-tune live performances of people that can really sing, we might as well use robots to sing. This is ridiculous.

  • @stuartmuzic

are you sure this is auto-tuned? how do you know that? I don't think it is, there is no reason they would have to auto-tune these amazing women :P

  • @BloomAndGrow Yeah, they're using a program called Evo. The fact that you can't really tell means they don't need it that much, but it is being used.

  • @BloomAndGrow

listen to "But this has never yet.." the computer notes between never, almost a sixteenth, and yet, and the quality of the voice has an electronic sound. There is no reason yes. But people have gotten used to a "radio" sound and producers (as in Glee ex) like to replicate that. Unfortunate. The key is to listen closely and go see live theater.

  • Why is this auto-tuned!!!!!??????

  • @stuartmuzic I saw this live it's not auto-tuned.

  • i'm a little bit in love with idinamenzel ,that voice is incredible !! :)

  • 0:37 sounds autotuned. is it just me?

  • Personally I prefer the 2003 version with Julia and Sutton, but I've got to give props to this version as well.

  • I love the little smile Kerry gives Idina at the end of the song.

  • Why doesn't she pronounce her 'n's properly? 'Laow at least I low I low him well'?!

  • my three favs, daniel and John, Idina and Kerry & Barbara and Elaine. whitney murders this song, not in a good way.

  • Even at her worst (she sounds a little bit weird here), Idina sounds great! :D

  • Excellent Video I think, Showcases the theatre that Idina Menzel brings into her singing, and Kerry Ellis's Vocals and Timing are amazing as well. Great Performance.

  • Elaine Paige is better than Idina Menzel, you say?

Elaine Paige doesn't think so... JUST SAYING!

    #ILoveIdinaMenzel

  • Hands-down IN LOVE with Idina Menzel.

  • Obviously they're both brilliant singers, personally here, I prefer Kerry. She seems a lot more relaxed and comfortable, whereas Idina is very shouty... I saw Elaine Paige in the King and I - the worst thing I've ever seen.

  • wow - amazing! <3

  • Kerry and Idina = awesome !!

  • OK, They are two very different signers. Firstly one is American, and one is English. So straight away diction will be different in both of them. However, pound for pound their voices are just as powerfull.I think the choice of these to ladies in this musical is the best pick. I don't think there would be two singers as great as these to ladies in the modern arena. But Hands down elaine paige towers above them all in this song!

  • personally i think rachel tucker is the best elphaba but that doesnt mean these two arent AMAZING!!!! :D

  • Comment removed

  • Stuuning!!!!!!!!!!!! perfect!

  • INCREDIBLES! FLAWLESS PERFORMANCES! EMOTIONAL! INCREDIBLE VOICES!

  • Hearing the two of them next to each other just shows how much of a better voice Kerry actaully has!

  • @Becklalaa yeh i gotta agree with you. ive never been a massive fan of idina, by all means shes very talented but this video just proves once and for all that kerry is the stronger singer, much less nasal and just a better voice all round. kerry is amazing <3

  • @ben3585 It's not about who is stronger, etc....two different and amazing power house women of the musical theater. Applaud them both! :)

  • IDINA MENZEL! <3

  • Idina Menzel and Leah Michelle really looks like each other.

  • This performance gave me chills it was so good.

  • I've never heard Idina sound as good as this.

  • Bleh. The girl on the left has her pitches down but has a freaking HORRIBLE tone. It's too bright! It sounds nasal. Make it darker! Their blend is good, but why didn't they go higher on the "why am I falling apart"? John Barrowman and Daniel Boys' version of this song is much better. But I DO love the tone and quality of the girl on the right. It's rich and pretty.

  • I couldn't get enough of this beautiful song, sung by the two best Elphaba's in the world!! Love it so much, it means a lot to me!!

  • two of the best belters in the business preforming one of the deepest theater numbers ever..and doing it near-flawlessly.

  • @betabluecat I'm sorry. They are only second best. Patti Lupone is well in her sixties and can still belt and own their butts. :)

  • @soby207 if only i could understand what she is saying while she is doing it...

  • pure musical theatre perfection on a stage i have also performed on! i think i just came in my pants!!!

  • Uh sorry but Elaine Page and Susan Boyle own this (in my opinion). Idina Menzel has a good voice, but this song isn't talent, its feeling and emotion of which Elaine Paige is Queen.

  • Kerry Ellis is probably my favorite Svetlana <3 She's the only one who makes singing her songs look easy when they really aren't. And Idina is awesome as usual. People can criticize them all they want, but I'd like to see them try to do better. Love this cast <3

  • Kerry+Idina=The Ultimate Singing Combination! :D

  • 3 people didn't know him well.

  • idina changed my life

  • omg, they touched my heart. truly beautiful. so deep... love idina

  • Idina looks so beautiful here, i couldnt take my eyes of the screen

  • Holy crap, Idina is FANTASTIC on this version, possibly better than the original :O

  • 2 people really have no soul.

  • The two most famous and popular Elphaba's in the world!!! It's fantastic (and unusual) to see two people so famous for the same role be on stage at the same time, let alone singing the same song. It's a phenomenal rendition of the song, but I have to say that Barbara Dickenson and Elaine Paige are still better. More Emotional with those two, but this one still ranks in the top three renditions for me.

  • @wilpardue2785 Agreed word for word... Except maybe I do like Elaine better with Susan Boyle on this one more than Elaine with Barbara

  • @wilpardue2785 The dutch singer Willemijn Verkaik is called the best Elphaba in the world. She did the part in half of the world and is selected as the best by most of the main musical-producers. But offcourse these two are good also;)

  • am i the only one who thinks idina menzel looks like lea michelle? (rachel from glee if anyone's unclear) very amazing! better than the peter kay and susan boyle version XD

  • @MsHammyUK She plays her mum in Glee

  • @AlexBurkeNo1Fan I know, but the resemblance is uncanny, right?

  • Am I the only one who looks at Idina and thinks "Damn, Lia Michele must be her young sister"? Not only they remind each other by their looks and voices, but their facial expressions are so similar its creepy. Anyways, Idina and Kerry are just amazing. Can't stop watching this.

  • @Didischor No you are not. That is the reason that Idina Menzel played her mother on Glee

  • @amazingme1515

ya i know but i mean like, its not only the way they look... its crazy, idk..

  • Beautiful song, sung beautifully... Simply Breathtaking xXx

  • kerry ellis is breathtaking

  • We're doing this song at school and I've become obsessed with this version of it because these ladies are beautiful and it sounds so amazing! :D

  • This is so beautiful! My two favourite Elphabas! Saw them both live :) Amazing! Powerhouses!

Love Kerry's smile at Idina at the end :)

  • AMAZING!! I love Idina. My two favourite Elphaba's singing as beautiful as ever!!

  • the Best two Elphabas singing together :) ( IDINA's #1. just sayin)

  • Idina Menzel is BEAUTIFUL! That was on my birthday :) I love Kerry Ellis soo much :P

  • @jgnjanja oh cul tanx :) wow it must have been unreal live :O i really want this song on my ipod, they're amazing :)

  • @MzEmilyB anytime ;) It was amazing. Especially when Josh sang the Anthem. And Endgame #3 amazing! It's on a CD so you can get both CD and DVD and enjoy it over and over again. ;)

  • could you please upload Heaven help my heart, Mountain duet and You & I (reprise)? :D And/Or, Where I want to be and Endgame 3. :D Oh God, the whole score is so brilliant! <3

  • when was this concert?

  • @MzEmilyB May 13th 2008. There were only 2 performances (May 12th and 13th) :D I was there on the 13th (the version on the DVD) :D

  • Just Amazing :O <3

  • Autotune much lol??

  • @nicktabus1000 No waaaaay!

  • @nicktabus1000 I take it you don't know Idina or Kerry, then? They don't need autotune! That's how they actually sound.

  • One of the greatest, most heartbreaking songs ever written. And full of sad truths, that no matter how much we think we know someone, there's so much about them that we don't know, and half the time we're kidding ourselves about what we think we know about them. And the performance here is simply amazing.

  • Can someone explain the story of chess to me? It's showing in a town near me soon, and I don't know if it's worth seeing or not...

  • one person doesn't want fantasy and freedom. Kerry and Idina just schooled Whitney and Cissy Houston

  • this is 10000000000 times better than the whitney houston v ersion. They chose two goddesses, sorry, GODDESSES to sin this amazing song.

  • As if someone disliked this!! psht

  • this and the daniel boys version are the best! :D :D :D :D :D :D pleese say that i can download this version.

  • How can there be an HD version when it wasnly released on dvd?

  • @kaseryn clear that it was "Chess in Concert" is the show on dvd and cd

  • @kaseryn Even if something isn't actually HD, you can upload in the HD format. It just insures you get the best posiible quality out of the footage

  • @greeeeeg2 I see thanks.. rather messy of youtube. I was hoping really that there was a HD rip somewhere i hadnt seen. I think there is but i've never seen it, apparently PBS broadcast it on a HD channel at one point..

  • @kaseryn it was, i have it :)

  • seen better

  • wow man that was amazing! nothing went wrong it was just amazing i love their voices and I just love idina Menzel no matter what aghhhh loved it!!

  • Wowee! This must have been how Bjorn and Benny imagined it would sound. Exquisite

  • WOW! their voices blend so well!!! At the end their two voices sound like one. I LOVE THE UNISON ENDING!

  • Amazing!

  • oops! somebody's computer mouse accidentally hit the dislike button...

  • love love love love love love love love love love love this.

I cannot express my love for this video enough.

  • i'm 100% straight, but boy, do i envy josh groban! two beautiful women with amazing voices, singing about/to him like that. goosebumps!

  • @R1Scruff

I'm not sure I agree with you here. I think part of the problem with the enunciation issue is the positioning of the mics, which pick up every single little mouth movement - Josh Groban has a similar problem with his 's's in during "Anthem" and "Endgame #3".

As for sharpness....she's not sharp in this at all...in fact she's bang on all the notes. She does have a very unique voice and it's not to everybody's taste (I personally love it) but there definitely aren't tuning problems...

  • @boyofletch Post-production autotuning is a lifesaver.

  • @R1Scruff Harsh. Menzel's amazing.

  • ahhh this is the perfect duet!

  • idina and kerry do a great job on this song. well done to both ladies...Beautiful

  • i love idina but she needs to keep her head still

  • I love Idina Menzel's smile :)

  • I love this song and I love the way their voices compliment each other pretty well. Buuuut, from a musical theatre students pov, there are a few notes :P

Idina sing's quite nasally and her diction at times is bad - 'N's sounding like 'L's? She also moves her head a lot which is a bit distracting - one of my tutors pointed this out to me one lesson when I was singing. However she has quite a powerful voice and I love her Vibrato.

  • Cont:

Kerry I adore. Her voice is awesome. But from about 1:49 for a little bit she's twiddling her fingers. Not sure but that could be an acting choice or it could be nerves. This is me getting picky but it's things I've been taught to look out for. I'm not entirely sure, but sometimes I think her facial expressions are a bit blank but that could just be me - she's got quite a subtle way of acting which in a way is good as it's natural but bad as it's difficult to tell sometimes.

  • @xoxoJennaLouiseoxox What's wrong with twiddling your fingers? Some people are so nit picky. She does it to help get smooth phrasing (it proves she's artistic) and she sometimes does it when she switches on her vibrato. She used to do it a lot on the last note of The Wizard and I.

  • @idinafanboi I'm not saying it's a bad thing. Just saying that I noticed it...

  • @xoxoJennaLouiseoxox Oh ok. Just you said "She's awesome BUT" then pointed it out... which kinda does imply its a bad thing... Sorry for the misunderstanding

  • @idinafanboi It's okay [: Probably wasn't expressed as well as it could have been - I did make those comment a fair few months ago xD

  • I'd also like to comment on the staging - I like the turning around and blackout thing. That's very clever. And I like how Josh Groban is in the background and is lit, like he's to focus of the song (which, forgive me if I'm wrong, it correct right?)

And from a brief clip in Josh Groban's Anthem video, I'd like to say I love the conductor person. There was a brief clip of him really getting into the song and it reminded me of the music teacher at my old high school. Much love! :P

  • This song is amazing. I'm performing this for my musical theatre class and I cannot stop singing it. It's such a beautiful song that has been amazingly performed by these two women. Idina and Kerry are absolutely unforgettable singers. Well done ladies(:

  • man, serious goosebumps :D both amazin performers :)

  • just when i thought i couldnt love idina more i saw chess.....

  • wonderful!! :D

  • Kerry has such a beautiful voice <3

  • i love how josh is just in the background like "chess" :)

  • OMG! This is amazing! Two of my favourite "Elphabas" of all time singing a duet I've never seen Idina in white before, and she looks like an angel! They are both just incredible. Thanks so so much!

  • Comment removed

  • I Love Idina so much, but I never noticed before that she sometimes says her "N's" like "L's" She is still one of the most amazing singers I've heard, but that was a bit distracting...

  • @Musicteachersheff

damn! I had never noticed that!

  • You can tell how much Idina loves this song xD she's smiling so much through the song, and savouring all the little fancy bits!

  • @RaWrZzZz I think shes always smilng like this when shes singing xD Thats what makes her so wonderful^^

  • seriously, if you have proof that can sing better, or even as well as these AMAZING people, then i think you can feel free to criticise. otherwise, keep your mouths shut because this is a lovely song sung by 2 of the best actresses/singers on west end and broadway. keep your negative opinions to yourselves.... please....

  • i love love love this song<3

  • @MrClasicalOne okay Idina Menzel is an amazing singer and she isn't singer faster than the music..it sounds different because the orchestra is playing the accompaniment and not her notes so obviously it sounds different.

  • @SunshineeLuvv Maybe she's great, but not in this one. I've seen far better live versions.

  • to be honest Idina Menzel is not really singing, she yells! not a very pleasant version, honestly. and she sings a bit faster than the orchestra... it's something strange here.

  • @MrClasicalone never heard of belting?? its a vocal technique that idina uses that a lot of singers struggle with but she pulls off.. look. it. up

  • @coynie3 When you speak about belting, you'd better look at the score of the song.

  • @MrClasicalone if you knew as much as you think you know about music then you would know that a good singer doesn't just follow the score exactly, but will make it his/her own.. if she wants to belt then goddammit let her belt because she can do it extremley well.

  • @coynie3 sorry, but I honestly don't like her style, at least not in this song!

  • Holiday treat. The two best Alphebas sing Chess duet

  • @jacobsimon *Elphaba

  • This is wonderful! <3

My two favorite Elphabas doing a duet. :) <3

  • Idina Menzel is fantastic!!!!!

  • Idina is absolutely incredible. Such a talented and beautiful woman!!

  • they're both fantastic, but Kerry's voice is just so smooth it makes me melt.
