Hey that was a great cover. Could you make a tutorial for this video because you are the only one on youtube that had a cover of this song...at leastas far as I could tell.....please, it would be greatly appreciated
@venetask8ter Hi. As I've said before, it's been several years since I played this, so I've forgotten how to play it myself. I learnt it just by ear. I strongly encourage this and watching examples such as mine, it will make you a better musician.
If I can make a suggestion friend, why don't ya try playing the left hand octaves together and in quavers like 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and (I'm sure you knew that already!). It just makes for a much fatter and steady bassline, I use it when playing Jump!!
Now I'm off to get my keyboard and watch your video to learn that intro!!!!
@maddermofo I was probably making up for the lack of a full band. Maybe one day I'll find 4 other guys who love this song as much as I. Happy learning!
@altthejazzman I meant "I will probably get" and start to learn... not that you should btw :). p.s. currently listening to 70th and 80th albums by Jarre :)
Probably get a used 1100 and start to learn. The aftertouch (though monophonic) seems to be big fun when used!!! :))) Your presentation reminds me more of Jarre than Van Halen though ;)
I'm learning to play this song now, and you're playing it well! I also adore you, because you're playing it on a hammer action keyboard, while I'm used to the weighted or even non-weighted keyboards.
Can you send me the DX7 patch you used in the video? I'm getting a DX7 on Saturday. :)
You're getting a real DX-7? Awesome. My DX-7 is a hardware card inside my Yamaha sound module. Therefore the way I edit it is different. I can't actually export a patch to you unless you're using the XGEdit software that I use.
Thanks for the reply! Actually I managed to get a DX7II-FD yesterday :) I'll do it like this: I have a Yamaha A5000 sampler that has nearly the same effects as the MU-100 I think, so I'll hook up the DX7 to it.
Jealous of the keyboard pal, very nice ;) Excellent playing, but to be really picky, the 2nd time you play the opening riff, when the left hand does the quick dah, dee, dee,da(Bflat,G,A,F),Eddie adds a roll back to Bflat, with a quick G and A. So Bflat,G,A,F,G,A then the Bflat on the next bar measure. (I probably explained that very badly, but hey listen to the original recording ;))
Hammer action, just like a real piano. Actually, this keyboard feels better than my upright piano! I also use aftertouch for manual vibrato. Keeps the hands on the keys!
How about that for a compliment! Yes, this is a recording of Eddie in his bedroom in 1984. Just ignore the computer keyboard and the MIDI controller keyboard that was invented in 2000.
great job! I know how to play only a little of that song on the keys. Someday I will have to learn the rest! "I'll Wait" I guess! lol! great job tho! Don't let those others get you down on the timing. A lot of others ppl can't even play the boards at all!
Doesn't sound like you were playing along with the song. Your off tempo in a few areas, the bassline starts a quarter measure too late. The beginning was played wrong. If that was your rendition, then cool, but tighten it up more before you show people "how to play it".
As I stated. Among other things, the bassline starts a quarter measure too late. It was constructive criticism. How should I elaborate on that? It's pretty self explanatory. Listen to your rendition, then listen to the cd. You'll see what I mean
Yeah, Eddie wrote all the keyboard parts, but of course he couldn't play that live as everyone expected him to play guitar, so it was always just backing tape for keyboard parts. I would have played for them (jk)!
However, this shows how the keyboard part is played, not how to drum it. It's not supposed to be a cover, it's an example of the keyboard part, because I enjoyed learning it, so I thought I'd share what I learnt.
don't take my comment the wrong way, it was good. just needs a beat dude. why did'nt you program percussion on your keyboard that would rock.i would lite my lighter as i listened....
Thats right, aftertouch mapped to pitch bend 1 semitone for manual vibratos and solos leaving my left hand free for playing.
I forgot to mention the sounds are coming from an upgrade card inside the MU100R module. Its called a PLG100-DX, which is basically a hardware DX-7 synth on a circuit board, controlled by the MU100R. So proper retro 80's synthesis.
Oh yeah the DX expansion board, great piece! I'm going to buy one of this unit (mu100r) myself, and that PLG too (but I'll probably put it on the motif rack).
damn, what a bunch of dumbasses. youre pretty good at keyboards, regardless of whther youre just fuckin around or not. and that was pretty cool. ill bet most of these assholes and shitheads dont even have the patience to learn half of that. good job
I think U R right Dumbfukk! The people that are the most critical, seem to be the ones that don't know their ass from a hole in the ground! They can't figure out how to turn on a synth, plug in a guitar, or wipe their own shitty ass! LOL
Yeah, in the original song, I think that the bassline is played by uhm... a bass. The treble side was really good, but most of the intro to the song is the layered effect of starting out with the synth, then the bass and the drum rock beat, then guitar.
With just the synth piano, the song just doesn't have the same feeling. You played it correctly, but it really doesn't sound like the song after 30s. Maybe you could hit the left hand harder?
I could add drums. I could do the whole song but this is just an example of what the keyboard intro sounds like. I could delete the line in recorded keyboard sound. and just use the sound the camera recorded. which includes the original song playing from my speakers. I played along with it anyway.
Right....What is the point in saying that. Is this not a place to show appreciation or otherwise worthy CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. You seriously need to justify that, or your comment is worthless, because I see no backed up reasoning in your arguement.
You say I suck - why? Why is it nothing like the song.
You useless waste of webspace. Show me whats wrong, do it better, or leave.
Any chance of a tutorial?

Actually I've remembered it's not even that straightforward. The DX-7 makes the sound, but the MU-100 applies effects:. amp-sim, delay, envelope.

Thanks for the reply! Actually I managed to get a DX7II-FD yesterday :) I'll do it like this: I have a Yamaha A5000 sampler that has nearly the same effects as the MU-100 I think, so I'll hook up the DX7 to it.

If it everyone else likes it, and I did indeed play it perfectly in time with the original, then your judgement must be out. Sorry.
Or perhaps you'd like to elaborate and make your criticism constructive.
